Title: Siglent SDG1000 (aka LeCroy WaveStation) firmware updates

Hi All!

The Siglent SDG1000 Series AWGs are also sold (albeit for a lot more money) by LeCroy as WaveStation. The only difference between the Siglent original and the LeCroy rebadge is the color (the LeCroy is in black), the numbering of the outputs (Siglent is Ch2 left/CH1 right while LeCroy is vice versa) and the lack of the counter functionality in the LeCroy.

Owners of the Siglent SDG1000 will certainly know that there is no official download for firmware updates on the Siglent website. A firmware update has to be requested by email to Siglent in China, which may or may not yield in a response. Even worse, there is also no mention if a new firmware variant comes out.

On the other side, those that paid an insane amount of money for the LeCroy rebadge can at least find firmware updates on the LeCroy website.

The question so far was if a Siglent SDG1000 can simply be flashed with the LeCroy firmware, and if so, will the AWG still work. Well, as I found out today the answer to this is 'yes' and 'yes'.

I have a Siglent SDG1020 which I have to admit wasn't my best investment, and amidst the disappointment with its performance I thought 'what the hell', downloaded the latest WaveStation firmware from the LeCroy website and flashed it into my SDG1020. My SDG1020 is still grey/beige and not black, but aside from that everything works fine. As expected I lost the counter functionality (which was crap anyways) but the GUI fonts and colors seem to be a bit nicer, and Ch1 is now on the left and Ch2 on the right. The signal output is as good or bad as before (the terrible jitter is still there), but all waveforms work fine and the output levels seem fine, too. The only issue I noticed that in the info pane the model number is now empty, probably because I have an SDG1020 (20MHz) while the Wavestations are SDG1010, SDG1025 and SDG1050 (10MHz, 25MHz and 50MHz) so there is no equivalent LeCroy model number.

The generator is still crap but at least I now have a more reliable source for firmware updates. And I guess reverting to Siglent firmware will be just as easy.

No, it's exactly the same primitive program as supplied by Siglent.

I haven't tried feeding it an external 10MHz signal (I don't have a suitable signal source), however the internal trigger is quite stable so I doubt this will help.

If I read the other thread correct I understand the jitter only shows at low frequency square waves because the square wave is taken from a comparator which is fed with a sine wave. At low frequencies the edges just get to slow for the comparator. IMHO this is pretty bad but perhaps it can be fixed by putting a wire between the DAC's sign bit (through a resistor) to the comparator instead of using the sine wave output. Another fix is to use the AWG function for square waves.

I haven't looked into why the jitter is so bad but it's apparent that this is a design flaw and not just a defective unit, and quite frankly whoever decided that this was good enough to go to market should be shot.

Which is a real joy, considering how crap the software is. And at the moment I'm not even sure that this will not result in bad jitter.

But it shows again that just because it looks somewhat nice and has nice features doesn't make this thing more than a toy (which is what it is). I didn't expect much for that money, but even for that price it should not produce such bad jitter.

And how a company like LeCroy can put their name on such crap is beyond me.

Actually Lecroy specifies the jitter at 0.1% of the period for square waves. I bet it meets that spec  8)

To be far, the hardware quality is quite reasonable. Which of course is no help if the design is messed up.

I also don't think the problem is unfixable, but that should have been done before throwing it onto the market.

Most certainly. Of course no-one can say for sure as LeCroy won't admit that they are selling this junk at ridiculous prices, but they are suffering from the same issues (I got reliable notice that the LeCroy WaveStation suffers from the same jitter problems as the SDG1000). And the LeCroy WaveAce (their rebadged version of some Siglent scopes) also shows identical issues to the Siglent originals, and the same poor overall quality.

You are bold flashing the Siglent with the Lecroy firmware. If you didn't mind bricking the Siglent, I guess it's worth taking the risk, just to find out if the hack works. Could anyone please try reverting to Siglent firmware and see if it works & restores everything to normal, including counter and model number identity crisis?

Well, the SDG1000 is a toy, as a reliable tool it's really crap. The only thing it's really good at is to create a jittery signal, which is nice for playing around with the jitter analysis tools of my scope, but that's about it.

The money I pad for the SDG1020 was not money well spent. So even if I had 'bricked' the damn thing this would not have been a huge loss (and I'm sure even then it could be revived by removing the flash and flashing it externally). So there was nothing bold in what I did.

I did flash the LeCroy and back to the Siglent firmware multiple times today, no problem. The reason I went back to the Siglent firmware is that I wanted to try something with the useless counter function that the LeCroy doesn't have.

It's essentially the same. The LeCroy firmware has a different UI color set (IMHO a much nicer one than the one of the Siglent firmware), but it lacks the counter (which is utterly useless anyways so I guess LeCroy didn't want it in their firmware). And the left output which is labelled 'CH2/Cnt' on the Siglent becomes Ch1 and the right output becomes Ch2, which is much more logical.

The biggest benefit of the LeCroy firmware however is that it can simply be downloaded from their website, while for the Siglent firmware you have to beg their 'support' for the file. I remember that someone in this forum has once claimed that this is because Siglent wants to be sure that the firmware is for the correct hardware version but that is bollocks (there's only one firmware set for all SDG1000).

Since you have a SDG1010 (the 10Mhz version) for which a WaveStation equivalent (WaveStation 2012) exists, can you please go to Utilities -> EditInfo (it's on page 2) and check what is listed as model no? Mine says nothing but then I have a SDG1020 for which no WaveStation equivalent exists.

I am now an owner of a SDG1005.  I checked over some of the functions and immediately found what I think are a couple of bugs.  When set up in sweep mode, it appears that the LOG sweep function is not correct.  It behaves more like an exponential rise, rather than an equal power log10 low to high sweep.  The only way I can get a close approximation of the proper frequency distribution is to reverse the direction of the frequency sweep (high to low rather than low to high).
Can someone who has the Lecroy firmware on their machine check if this is true with that version as well?  A 20 second audio sweep (20hz to 20khz) works well as a test, to allow monitoring of the frequency.
Also, the DB level indication seems way low for the actual output.  An actual measured zero dbm (into a high-z input millivolt-meter) level is shown as something like -32dbm on the generator screen.  The maximum settable dbm level is -13 on channel 1, and I know the maximum open circuit voltage is 20 volts pk-pk.  Am I missing something? 
I plan to forward my concerns to Siglent.  I think this unit has the potential to be very useful, when a few of the bugs are ironed out!

It seems the LeCroy firmware is always +1 more than the comparable Siglent firmware (odd numbers like the current .27 for Siglent , even numbers like .28 for LeCroy firmware).

The next Siglent firmware will probably be .29 or .31, and the next LeCroy version should be .30 or .32.

Next, numbers are only "calculated in head" for thinking purpose, not exact values.

0dBm means 1mW!   

Lets look littlebit.

0.225Vrms to 50ohm is around 1mW power, so we say its level is 0dBm in 50 ohm system.
but example 0.225Vrms to 100kohm what is dBm?  It is around  -32.9dBm
For 1Mohm it is -42.9dBm.

Also it can not 20Vpp to 50 ohm load. Ok lets take High-Z example 100000k
10Vpp sinewave is roughly 3.5Vrms (rounded)
it is -9dBm
But for 50ohm load what happend. V drops around half. If there is 1.75Vrms sinewave and load is 50ohm there is around 17.9dBm level.

Now I do not know what impedance SDG use for High-Z  dBm value calculation. Of course in SDG display value is calculated value from voltage set and impedance. And how this math accuracy.

Las time I have used SDG1025 with new FW it show around right dBm for sinewave when also output impedance was set for 50ohm and power was measured with HP power meter (of course 50ohm impedance).  I do not remember results but this I remember that result was "acceptable" for cheap instrument.

It is good also to note that SDG output is always 50ohm source impedance independent of output  setting High-Z or 50ohm. Setting affect only to displayed level setting number.

If load is other than High-Z (I do not know what value is High-Z) or 50ohm it need user calculate real level.

If you set output to 50ohm (utility menu) then look agen dBm values. Different?

"into a high-z input millivolt-meter" and you look what power SDG display.

If you use dBm with SDG you need also use 50ohm setting and 50ohm load. Then it show around right. Becouse High-Z... as before. How much it is. If you drive then 1k load or 10k load or 100ohm load.  SDG do not know your real load. Number is right if your load is same what SDG use for calculating displayed.

Thank you everyone, and especially rf-loop for the excellent discussion. 

I do understand that dbm refers to measured power into a load.  I come from an audio background, so I am used to the reference impedance for dbm as being 600 ohms.  My millivolt meter is calibrated to measure 0dbm as .775 volts rms (1mw>600ohms).  Personally, I would prefer dbV output levels, which would be independent of loading (i.e. always into "hi-z"), and then be aware of the 50 ohm output impedance to calculate level drops.  Most of the gear I work with has a 10k ohm, or higher, input impedance, so there is relatively low circuit loading.  The fact is, it is "all in our heads" anyway, and I just need to adjust to how they execute the level setting in the generator.

The generator output number one is rated 20 volts pk-pk into an open circuit (so-called "hi-z").

Anyone have thoughts on the log sweep issue?  If the Lecroy firmware made a fix to this, I would change over.

Just checked the SDG1005 with my Fluke meter that has dbm with an adjustable reference impedance.  With both the meter and the generator set for 50 ohms, into a 50 ohm terminator, the output, as compared to the generator display, is within .01db of right on, so not too bad.  In "hi-Z" mode, -30dbm, as displayed on the generator, measures exactly 1 volt rms or 0dbV.  I can work with that, since I usually just need to make relative db jumps in level to calibrate equipment.

I want to draw attention back to the sweep function of this generator.  One of the often used functions for me is performing sweeps over the audio range and beyond.  My other analog function generators (Tektronix FG504 and B&K 3020) have always produced the expected so-called "log" sweep, which is around a decade of upward frequency change over a particular period of time.  I have also externally swept the generators at one octave per period of time.  The first time I set up this SDG1005 for "log" sweep operation, I could tell right away that the frequency was not increasing as I expected.  I put the generator on the scope and set up the graphing function for frequency over time.  It seems to me that the rise is exponential (I have not calculated the values, someone better at math could do that).  The sweep envelope does appear to match a couple of the built in arbitrary waveforms.  I have shown below the graph from the SDG1005 and, for comparison, the same sweep set up on my Tektronix FG504.  I would like to ask Siglent to change the sweep envelope for "log" to either octave/time or decade/time (or both).  If someone has a suggestion for language to help convey that (mathematically or otherwise), I would appreciate the input. :)

First image looks like a logarithmic, second like an exponential function. The trick, however, to get a logarithmic display on an oscilloscope with a steady x (time) deflection is to drive the signal with the inverse function of the desired logarithm - which is an exponential function.

Okay.  Now the graph displayed on the scope screen shots has the x axis running in real time, i.e. linear seconds per division, so any instantaneous reading of the frequency at any particular time along that graph should fit the curve of the sweep I am desiring.  By the way, I put log in quotes, because I came to understand that the rising curve of the sweep envelope isn't really a "log" function.  I think this is where the firmware designers are missing the boat.  The FG504 sweep envelope is what I am looking for.  The scope is reproducing that envelope just as I expect.  I have in the past plotted out the frequencies for the FG504 to be sure they fit my response plots.  I am looking forward to being able to automate this process using the trigger output function of the generator.  I also want to be able to use the arbitrary function to sweep a burst waveform to check peak power output over a range of frequencies with some automation.  I can get an approximation of what I want by reversing the direction of the sweep, but it still is not conforming to either a decade or octave per time unit rise (or drop, in that case) in frequency.  If you look at the little graphic on the generator screen in log sweep mode, you can see they have the correct visual idea of the "log" sweep function, but not the actual sweep.  I am also wondering if they use one of the arbitrary waveforms as the envelope for the sweep.  I haven't tried extending the sweep to the maximum time to see if there are discreet steps that suggest the 16k record length.  I might try that next, just to get some additional insight.

Where do you apply that function to integrate with the AWG. Do you make a waveform in MS Excel and export into the AWG?

Right there is the problem.  We, as end users, do not have access to the location where the log sweep function is stored.  It is set in firmware, and requires a change in an updated version.  I have sent an email outlining this to Siglent.  They are apparently on vacation until May 3 for "Labor Day".  I think it would be excellent to be able to create and store custom sweep curves to suit the end user's needs.

Yes, that is correct.  (t*c) was originally superscripted to indicate exponentiation. I'm guessing the superscript got lost somewhere, so it appeared like 10(t*c), which is linear. It should be 10 ^ (t*c).

Yup. That is the kind of envelope I expect from the "log" sweep of a function generator.  Let's hope that Siglent can incorporate that into the generator firmware, or better yet, let us create sweep envelopes ourselves, just like any other arbitrary waveform.  By the way, I did try using the frequency modulation function, but the frequency range (equivalent to start and stop frequencies) is too narrow.

You can create your own custom sweep curves using FM as follows:
1: Draw the sweep curve using the Easydraw app (Equation, Line or hand draw etc).
2: Download the curve to the SDG.
3: On the SDG select the “Arb” function and then load the Stored Waveform.
4: Next select the type of wave you want to sweep (Square, Sine etc)
5: Set the frequency of the wave to the midpoint of your sweep range, so if you want to sweep from 0Hz to 20KHz you would set 10KHz.
5: Set the amplitude etc.
6: Press the Mod button and select "Type" to "FM".
7: Set the “FM Freq” to the sweep duration. Freq = 1/t ,  so for a 10 second sweep set “FM Freq” to 100mHz.
8: Set the ‘FM Dev’ to Half your sweep range ( so for a 0Hz to 20KHz sweep set 10KHz again).
9: Set the “Shape” to Arb.
10: Enable the output.

Note: It should be possible import sweep curves from Excel or other apps as CSV files into Easywave and then download them to the SDG, you will probably need to add the header information which you can see by looking a saved wave. But I haven’t tried this.

I added the sine curve data as well, simply by adding a sine function in the excel file. I threw in Vpp and DC offset as well. Enclosed is the new excel-file for anyone to have fun with. Even if you know very little about excel, it is OK to change the values in the green cells.

The graph below shows a 2 second log sweep from 1 to 100 Hz with 2Vpp and 1V offset. It is based on a table with 1 mS increments. (2000 values).

It should be easy to export the 2 relevant columns (A (timecode) & C (Voltage level)) as a csv file (with correct headings etc.) and then import this csv-file into the AWG.

I found an old csv-file i previously have worked on and believe I found the correct format of csv-files from my old file.

 Now I have converted the data from Excel columns A and C into a new csv-file. The content looks like this:

It is a 2.001 second log sweep from 1 to 100 Hz with 2Vpp and +1V offset. (just like the graph in my above post (page 3)) It is based on a table with 1 mS increments. (2001 values).
(you should delete the very last line ("2.00000e+00,1.00000e+00,") if absolute correct timing is needed (2.000 seconds)  :-/O )

I enclose the csv-file. If anyone would like to try it, please feel free to do so. IIRC, it must be "played back" on the AWG at a frequency of 0.5 Hz to generate the intended frequency sweep over the 2 second sample time.

At 1 Hz "playback", the frequency span would be 2 - 200 Hz
At 10 Hz "playback", the frequency span would be 20 Hz - 2 kHz
At 100 Hz "playback", the frequency span would be 200 Hz - 20 kHz
At 1 kHz "playback", the frequency span would be 2 - 200 kHz
At 1 MHz "playback", the frequency span would be 2 - 200 MHz

Because .csv files are not allowed, I had to change the file type to .txt. Please change the file type back to .csv before importing into your AWG.

EDIT: File removed, it didn't work as expected. It shows up on the Siglent as a strange signal with an amplitude of 8.995 Vpp and Offset of 5.497 VDC. Enclosed is a screenshot of the csv-file played back @ 1 Hz. (the sweep time looks spot on 1000 mS)

rf-loop asked what issue I was having with triggering using the FM modulated method of generating a "log" (or any other type of) sweep.  The first time I tried this, the trigger output was syncing to the carrier frequency, when what I wanted was the modulation frequency.  I have discovered that I can get it to trigger on the modulation signal by being sure I set FM Dev. last in the order of setup.  So it turned out not to be a problem, as much as understanding the way the setup works.

I look forward to trying nixxons CSV file, when I get back to the shop.

I am trying to figure out the correct csv format for the Siglent. I saved a csv and a bmp file from my triggered Rigol DS1102E, and that csv file looked like garbage when imported into the Siglent as well. Screenshot below shows the kind of wave that was saved as csv on the scope and imported into the Siglent AWG.

I don't believe the Siglent is broken (yet). I loaded a home made test signal (csv-file named TEK_CAL3.csv) that I made a while back to generate a test pattern on my AWG to adjust the display geometry on some old Tektronix CROs. This file loads and runs like a charm on the Siglent AWG. Strange. I will have to study these files some more. I enclose the test file (with the file type changed temporarily from .csv to .txt), if anyone else would like to use it or troubleshoot with me.

It starts with a spike of 1.5 Vpp, followed by 9 spikes of 1.0 Vpp. The output from the Siglent of this file is perfect on both the X and Y scale. I will leave a Rigol screenshot for you to see as well.

The test file starts like this:

nixxon Did you try including the header information?  Adding a header with the 1000 point record length to your TEK3 file allowed it to open in Easywave.  If you can get it to open and display as expected there, then it should work in the generator.  Here is a header from a typical CSV file for the SDG1000 series (typos and all!):

The xpos and value statements were at the top of the x and y columns on all of the Siglent csvs I looked at.  Just change the "data lenth," to the number of points in your file.

Obviously, we will add more sweep mode in the future, but it will take some time.

Does anyone have a high-res scan of the top and bottom of the board out of a 1010 or a 1025?

I've checked my 1005 board thoroughly, and it doesn't look like there's an eeprom anywhere - and the instrument behaves like it has no nvram, after a power cycle, you end up back at 1mhz sine wave, with no channels on.

That makes me suspect that the model configuration is via 0-ohm jumpers, or perhaps an ADC reading the values of some resistors, most likely very close to the blackfin cpu.

So, if anyone has a scan (i've seen a few photos, but none with enough resolution around the cpu), I could compare to my 1005, and see if I'm onto something here.

Every digitally controlled function generator starts with the outputs off and usually with default settings. If you want to keep the settings, you need to save them to memory and recall when needed.

In menu you can select if unit start from last state or factory default. But outputs need always  manually turn on after new start. 


If start up with last setting is selected, please wait short time after any settings changes before shut off. (it save settings periodically but I do not remember exactly this period time, perhaps 3 second or something like this)

Of course you can also save your own settings to  internal (or external) non volatile memory and call them as you want. (10 setups to internal memory and same for your own Arb waveforms)

There is well enough non volatile memory for keep settings and also your own waveforms and also self cal (and factory cal) data. 

If it is set for last state startup outputs starts off state independent of what was state when turn generator off. This is for safety. User is responsible what he connet to his external circuits.

Example, if you have forget what was last state or you have forget it to start with default but last time you used it for for test where maximum level is ecample 50mV and then come short power drop out. and after second power up. Now your circuit get 4V and after smoke you check what all you need repair. It is most safe to keep output off after power up until user turn output on.

You do not need find memories from circuit photograps or with your eyes from board. They can find in SDG menu system and also user manual may help some (but user manual is poor with these things. Some things there is well explained but some things just poor or totally lack of detailed information.

The serial number and model are probably in the same flash where the firmware resides. It may be possible the model is encoded through jumpers but there are probably other differences in hardware between the models. The versions with >10MHz bandwidth have a fan.

Just an update that new firmware for the SDG1000 series has been posted on the Siglent web site.  Version ***.31  dated 10/28/1013.  They fixed the "log" sweep problem in the sweep function menu.  It now behaves as it should.  As usual, they didn't publish a change log, so I am not sure yet what other changes/fixes have been implemented.

By the way, Siglent's upgrade instructions (included in the compressed file) are somewhat wrong.
They state to insert the USB stick with the firmware and go to the "Firmware Upgrade" option.
However the option "Firmware Upgrade" in the utility menu doesn't exist (at least on my SDG1025).

In my case, it was "Update" (on the bottom of the last page, of the utility menu) and once I go there, the Store/Recall button lights up.
Then I had to select the firmware file using the file browser and press the Recall function key.
After 1-2 minutes, a message appears to inform the user the upgrade finished and to restart the generator.

Well... I just installed the firmware update (to .36), and the sweep function is now in worse shape than it was in earlier versions.  It now seems to have only one mode, no matter which sweep type or direction is chosen.  This mode is continuous up-down sweep in linear mode.  I haven't checked yet to see where the trigger out point is in the sweep range.  I tried several different frequency combinations and sweep times, with the same result.  I would be interested in having confirmation from other users.  I use sweep mode often and it is now useless for my purposes.  I highly recommend NOT upgrading to .36 if you need to generate sweeps.  My unit is an SDG1005. :-\
On the plus side, they finally implemented the promised channel coupling mode, which appears to work well.  I have not discovered what other things were fixed/changed yet (except for the startup screen).

I just tested the sweep function with version 36 but it seems to be screwed up in several ways. The sweep now goes up&down. Direction, lin/log and trigger seem to have no effect.

I don't think this is the case. I believe Fennec probably added the .zip extension to allow uploading to this forum.
The .ADS extension is not permitted to be uploaded here, but is correct for a Siglent firmware file that have been unzipped.
However it is best to wait for confirmation.

Hi,

I seem to be unable to upgrade my SDG1025 from 1.01.01.31R2 to *.37R2.

I've downloaded SDG1000-V100R001B01D01P37R2.ADS from the Siglent site and put it on FAT formatted USB memory. To update, I select Utility -> Page 2 -> Update (it switches to Store/Recall), then select the ADS file and press "Recall". It tells me: "Choice valid update file". (nice english :)

Anyone know what's wrong?
Hopefully I can skip from .31R2 to .37R2 without doing al the intermediate updates?

Recently Siglent have starting including changelogs with their FW.
You'll have to unzip it and look through the accompanying notes/install guides

OK, just done  my SDG1010 to check for you......
Your USB drive MUST have NO other files on it.

Mine was updated from a quite old version, no problems.

Same here. Updated with no problems after delete the other files on the stick.. But my serial number is gone now. Sems to be a bug in the Firmware.

Serial Number info is the last on that page at the bottom.
Is there any symbols/numbers showing at all?

Try re-applying the update.

If you have no luck I will point Siglent to your posts.

Can you confirm your AWG is a Siglent?
If is is a LeCroy, this will be the reason the SN has disappeared from the EditInfo screen.
But you should still have the SN on the case, right?

Siglents reply to me after I pointed them to your post:

This because the customer flashed the Lecroy firmware, it does not match SDG1000 series and will lose the SN.
But they are still under warranty if the SN on the back is still there.
Of course the SN in the system menu can only be recover by our factory.

So okay, it's my fault, because I buyed a crappy cheap Siglent.

Your images did not clearly show the label on your AWG.
There are many members that DO NOT think the SDG1000 series are substandard, I'm sorry you think this way.

I know that in some cases with some previous FW and HW combination, updating FW may destroy system display serial number.  I have been there... I have seen this happend in real world with my own eyes and I know sure it can happend with original Siglent FW update with Siglent SDG1000 series equipment what never have seen any LeCroy branded FW.  Long time ago also Siglent have answered to me about this kind of situation and they really know it.

I am sorry that firmware updating deleted your SN,  but it will not affect other functions. If you flash Lecroy's firmware,  the SN will be lost. and you still have the SN on the back and box. So they are still on warranty.

Perhaps IF flash with Teledyne LeCroy FW. I have not any experience about this.

It happends also in some cases just with Siglent FW.  This I'm absolutely sure.
It have happend to me (1-2 year ago) when I update SDG1000 series factory new eguipment and absolutely sure these have never seen any bit of Teledyne LeCroy FW's. Just genuine FW what I get directly from Siglent.  What I do not remember is what FW version it was and not anymore sure what HW (!) version.
So, this is not nessessary first suspect that someone have updated Siglent using LeCroy and this is reason. Siglent FW for SDG1000 can do this for Siglent SDG1000.

In this old case Siglent tell me that it do not affect warranty because serial is known (in bacside label).
Every customer who buy from me get also invoice/receip where is full details for possible warranty handling including also serial number and seller reference data for Siglent service and of course end user purchase date.

Serial is only one string in special position in the hardware (and "perhaps" there is some differencies between different hardwares related to serial number). This bug really do not affect any other things than serial number display.

Some manufactures ask your serial number, HW and FW versions etc and then they send FW update if they peoples are not too tired for customer care..  This is more safe way due to continuous develop in equipment hardwares.  Perhaps Rigol is right and it is not wise to share public downloadable FW updates?

I have had the Lecroy firmware on my SDG1010 but I could replace that with Siglent's firmware without a problem. I think one of the problems is that the update process itself is weird. When I update the firmware I suddenly find myself in the 'data recall menu (???) I then select the firmware file on the USB stick and press recall. After that nothing happens. No progress indicator. No indication the update was succesful. After some time the keypad starts to respond again...
It takes a power cycle to activate the new firmware. IMHO this way of updating firmware is prone to users switching their equipment off/on before the firmware has been updated properly.

Well, the SDG1000 is a toy, as a reliable tool it's really crap. The only thing it's really good at is to create a jittery signal, which is nice for playing around with the jitter analysis tools of my scope, but that's about it.

The money I pad for the SDG1020 was not money well spent. So even if I had 'bricked' the damn thing this would not have been a huge loss (and I'm sure even then it could be revived by removing the flash and flashing it externally). So there was nothing bold in what I did.

Did you have a chance to test the SDG2000X series? Would like to hear your opinion on that model.
Is the SDG2000X also rebranded by LeCroy under the WaveStation series?

Are you sure that your SDG1020 is not one of the early versions which had actual hardware issues? I read in another forum thread that Siglent did some fixes in the hardware stage in newer revisions to tackle some jitter issues.

No, I haven't. I was initially tempted to buy a SDG2000X to replace my Rigol DG1062z but then just got a Keysight 33522B. Not only because I was fed up with playing beta tester for Siglent's immature firmware, but also because the software that comes with the SDG2000X is the same crap EasyWave tool that they provided for their other AWGs.

At the moment and after my experiences with Siglent kit I'm not planning to buy any of their kit in the near future. Even less so after their recent episode of trying to rig prices.

Are you seriously asking me that because of a posting that I made almost three years ago and which pretty much predates the time when Siglent found that this was a hardware issue with their earlier revisions? 

But to answer your question, yes, this was one of the older hardware variants, and I later fixed it which did improve the original jitter issue a lot (it didn't disappear, though, but that was to be expected from a simple DDS AWG). Considering the low price it was an OK-ish generator, but I then quickly sold it because of the small sample memory and the crap software, and bought a Rigol DG1062z instead (there's a review of mine somewhere on the forum).

I was playing sometimes too with update files and missed opportunity to try Lecroy WaveStation firmware.
I opened there all kind of different firmware files and extracted all kind of files.
In here I look inside SDG1000-V100R001B01D01P31.ADS and You can download (I think) unpacked app file.

Inside is readable text and Siglent logo and more... this time was there different Lecroy version? But second
file I have is lets say P36 from Siglent and L36 from Lecroy. I unpacked them and tried to hack them together.
Something I got but... It says "don't match the model"... what is the differences. Fpga data file is exactly the
same and half of firmware file too.
You can look into firmware files and search for "sdg10" and "wavestation" and search other differences.

So... If I flash SDG1000 with Lecroy firmware I can use it fine, but...
there is NAG screen. And message tells you to update to correct
firmware. And how? Of course after you wait the time and generator
startup and working fine and you go to update menu and do it.
The same thing if you flash Lecroy with SDG firmware. I'm sure after
comparing codes.

I seem to recall the only real advantage of the LeCroy firmware was so it would work with their Labview drivers. Siglent didn't have any at the time, but they do now. (It is/was really very easy to hack the LeCroy Labview driver to change the *IDN? string check anyway)

Also the channel swap - CH1 and CH2 are not backward.

Then the colour scheme - yes, as a Red Green colourblind (like >10% of all males) the channel colours for Siglent are insane. I have to double double check what I am working on, LeCroy got this right.

But LeCroy also deleted the frequency counter. Having used it I really quite like it, at least until I find a proper one which I really don't need right now like a HP 53131A

Siglent wins here. If they only allowed the colour scheme to be user adjusted.

In the ChangeLog/Release Notes file I read:

hi,
i own a wavestation 2012 and i am a bit annoyed by the 10MHz frequency limit (wanted to generate FM for a 10.7MHz testing). has anyone experimented downloading Siglent firmware in a Lecroy branded one and see if you cannot activate the 20MHz frequency feature? or is this upper frequency hardware related (i would assume the clock divider inside some FPGA would be different)?
