Siglent SDM3055A with FW V1.01.01.22R1
« on: April 11, 2021, 11:16:00 am »
Hello!

I might be able to buy a Siglent SDM3055A at a fairly attractive price but I am having some questions and I can't seem to find the answers online.

My observation is that the firmware changed quite a lot, and some issues like slow update rate have been fixed. The UI also seems to be different compared to what can be seen on the early review videos.

Unfortunately most of the reviews are from 2015 so they might not be representative of the current state of the unit.

The latest FW V1.01.01.22R1 is quite recent. Apparently it was released on the 7th of February, 2021.

I couldn't find any reviews that were done using the latest firmware.

Here are my questions:
1. Does the unit have an embedded web server like the SDS1104X-E?

2. Is there a way to get a live feed of the meter's display via lxi-tools-gui?
This is possible via my SDS1104X-E because the scope runs an embedded VNC server, I checked with Remmina on my Manjaro workstation and it works fine.

This would be nice because I'm planning on making some videos and getting a direct feed of the devices screen would look a lot better than recording it via a camera.

3. I found a youtube video about a bug where saving a screenshot can looks up the unit. I also saw in the release notes that a bug was fixed where a long filename could cause the unit to lock up when a screenshot is saved.

Here is a link to the video: https://youtu.be/jAspDkZs-FE

Can someone check if they can reproduce the issue on the latest FW?

4. I found another video on youtube where the MOhm measurement range was broken and it showed some random values when the probes were plugged in but not touching at all.

Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/01sMASaorWE

Can someone check if they can reproduce the issue on the latest firmware?

5. Are there any bugs that you know about which are still not fixed?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

IIRC 3055A includes the USB-GPIB adapter.
1. No.
2. Possibly although I'm not sure if the creator of LXI-Tools has enabled it to work with SDM models. He's active here and there's an LXI-Tools thread you might like to check out.
The free EasySDM software offers a live display however you need also install the NIVISA Runtime package for the connectivity drivers.
3,4,5. All the firmware improvements since release are listed here:

Thanks!

Regarding EasyDMM, I don't know how well it would work on Linux and I'd rather try to find an alternative solution.

As far as I know, lxi-tools can take a screenshot of the screen of an SDM3055 so worst case I could write a script that takes a few and plays them back inside a window, which then I can record via OBS.

I will do some more digging.

I found the changelog that you linked but my problem is that I don't have the unit yet and it's not clear whether those specific issues on the videos have been fixed or not.

Ok, yes with a Linux OS EasySDM won't play nice with that but LXI Tools will and SDM3055 is supported.

I ended up not getting the meter because it was never calibrated since it was purchased in 2015 and I didn't any easy way to make sure that the meter would measure correctly.

For anyone who is interested, I ended up ordering a new unit and it arrived today. I am sad to report that the issue where the meter was reading random values in the mega ohm range, with the probes not touching anything, is still not addressed.

If you switch to ohms and just hold the probes (without touching the conductive parts), the meter will oscillate between overload and some random mega ohm values.

If you touch the positive probe only, it will display about 30 mega ohms.
