Amazon US has the Siglent SDS1104X-E on sale for $399 (reg $499)

Not sure how long it will last or if there is a similar discount in other countries.

That is a good deal, that price of 499 has been very stable for some time. I have seen a couple of returns being resold in the mid $400's but that's the best I have seen.

BTW I checked it online and I get the same $399.  Saelig still has it for $499

price of $399.10 is good for me in Amazon-USA.  trend is highest is $499 and  occasionally dips to  $375.  The $399.10 is still good.
see image, peak is the $499 price.  chart for following price I got from honey app, but you can use many other apps that do same thing (however they follow you on Internet, so just know  you give up some privacy to use these apps).

See the attached image with Price trend on this. I don't know how to make image inside the post

just bought this scope. pretty excited about the $399 sale price and decided I didn't want to wait until Black friday to see if it would go to $375.

I'm new to the forum.  is there one place where all the newest hacks for it are kept?  where should I start. thanks a bunch.

I've had mine a bit over three years and still have not hacked it, just don't need to, so I am not up on the latest info. Still, you will love it, a great hobby scope for sure and a deal at $399. A fellow forum member Tautech will be along. He takes some heat as he is the New Zealand distributor for Siglent, and while he is the first to recommend Siglent to most anyone who will listen (as if he gets a commission from a scope sold in New Jersey) he works hard to help any Siglent users that ask for tech help. He has been a valuable resource for me for sure. Enjoy.

As OP says you now have a lot of scope to get used to.  :)

BTW, what you describe as hacks isn't, it's just installing unofficial option codes generated with a python code which produces the same option codes as if they were official ones.

yes,  I'd like to unlock everything now and just get it all set up so I don't have to worry about that in the future.
This is my first oscilloscope.
Are there any downsides to unlocking it? if not I think I'd like to just do it all.

Amazon  is seller + shipper (should be here in 2 days).

Yes, it´s illegal and voiding warranty.

then I probably  will not unlock/ enhance it at all until  after the warranty expires.
How long is the warranty on  Siglent?  I think some of comments in Amazon say 3 years.

Do they reimburse you for shipping it to them for reimbursement or do email / phone troubleshooting and send you the parts to self-repair if needed?

thanks

I followed this set of instructions to use the python keygen script:

A few suggestions:

  - use a LAN or WiFi connection to be able to use the web console to enter SCPI commands to activate the keys - it's much less error prone than using the U O on the scope itself.  Besides, the only way to activate the 200M Bandwidth key is using SCPI anyway.  You can use the WIFI 30 times before you have to activate the license.

  - the script will generate a couple dozen keys for various options, but as far as I know the only ones that apply to the SDS1104X-E are 200M, AWG, WIFI, and MSO.  you might want to also note the 100M key in case you ever want to "revert" the scope for some reason.

  - unless your scope will be set up permanently on your bench with the LAN connected, do yourself a favor and order the TP-Link TL-WN725N WiFi adapter from Amazon for $10.  It works great.

Siglent provides a 3 year warranty

As far as the legality goes, I'm pretty sure it's not illegal and you can easily revert the 200M bandwidth key.  The other 3 keys won't void a warranty - they are supported features.

thank you so much.

I read something about  noisy fan, if I upgrade the fan would that void the warranty?
I assume there are post in here somewhere with recommendations for other fans ( but I will skip that until 3 years if it means void warranty though)   I'm assuming there are some Stickers on the unit that if cut then void warranty.

Says it includes these items: SDS1104X-E, Quick Start, Calibration Certificate, 4 passive probes, USB cable
I am buying the   TP-link  TL-WN725N  also for $10.  is there anything else I should get ?

INAL, but my understanding is that in the US the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it so manufacturers can't refuse warranty service due to a "warranty void if broken"  sticker (see section 102(c)).  There are two caveats:

  - if the part that is defective was made so by someone other than the manufacturer, they don't have to honor the warranty for that part

  - Magnuson-Moss only applies to consumer goods.  There's a thread somewhere on eevblog where Keysight is apparently trying to nullify warranties because they claim their products aren't "consumer goods".  I'm pretty sure that wouldn't hold up for something sold mass market on Amazon or without condition on the manufacturer's website.  But if the dispute got to that point, I'm pretty sure the trouble and hassle of pursuing it wouldn't be worth the $400 you spent.

So if you replaced the fan they'd still have to honor the warranty, but not for something that broke when or due to installing the fan (such as the fan caused the unit to overheat to the point of damage).

All that said, the fan is definitely audible but I personally don't find it annoying or distracting.  Of course, that's a very subjective determination.

Everything you change on the scope without a permission is not legal, just saying. ;)

The "supported" features cost money, you must pay for it to get the keys.
Now you avoid the paying by generating the keys inofficial - What do you expect how siglent react if you must send your in such manner modified scope for repair under warranty ?
I won´t stop the party and chances are high that siglent won´t reject the warranty in such cases, but it´s not that easy to expect it´s OK if you do it so without paying for it.  8)

I'd expect them to repair/replace if the problem had nothing to do with the keys.

But I'd also expect that if they refused I'd be left in a situation where I could raise a stink, but anything too far beyond that would likely be more than $400 worth of trouble.

That's the same situation I'd be in if I sent in a non-hacked scope for warranty work and they refused to honor the warranty.  I don't know if Siglent would do such a thing (I'm guessing not, then again what do I know?),  but in general the practice of refusing to repair/replace for whatever reason or making the warranty process costly or difficult enough for it to be not worth the trouble is not uncommon.  Maybe you happened to catch an unhelpful customer service rep?  Maybe you called during the wrong phase of the moon?  At some point in anyone's life you'll be treated unfairly and fighting it will be more trouble than it's worth.

On the other hand, I'll even go so far as to admit that there's the possibility that I'm simply wrong (a very slight possibility  :D)

Each person has to gauge their own risk tolerance for such things.

But I'll wrap this up with a statement that I'm sure that the "warranty void if removed" sticker is a bogus scare tactic (at least in the US).

If Siglent really didn’t want you to “unofficially upgrade” their scopes they could make it far more difficult than it is. There has been much speculation that Siglent/Rigol view it as a selling feature to hobbyists and make their money from large buyers like schools who don’t get involved with stuff like that. The fan does not bother me much, YMMV. Personally I would concentrate my energy on the significant task of learning to use it, there is a lot to learn there. Download all of the information to do the hack and save it for later. However unlikely, if something goes wrong and you brick your spiffy new scope you will hate yourself in the morning. Just my 2 cents 😉

according to  Honey app that tracks prices on things,  1104X-E  generally stays at $499  but  Amazon puts it on sale 20% off regularly enough to  $399, i.e.  Oct 11-12  Amazon Prime day.
The lowest I see it goes is  $375 or 25%  off on more rare days such as  the 2021  Black Friday as a limited "lightning sale."

I called Siglent  in Ohio, USA  last week to ask them if  the 1104X-E  would also be on black Friday sale this Nov. 2022 year and thus I would wait for that since it's a significant drop. was told that  Amazon is the reseller and shipper - the sale is completely controlled by amazon and what they want to offer it for and if they will offer special black friday sale is all up to amazon.

It will probably go back to  $499  soon,  then "perhaps"  it might be $375  on Black Friday  or not and I did not want to wait for the cycle of $399 to come back around or have to stare at the screen all night Nov 26 black friday  waiting for the "lightning sale" of a possible $375.

See the Honey chart I posted above or just look at Honey or similar app for the tracking price trend over several months for the item.  I'm not saying to get honey since you lose your privacy,  it just helped me feel more comfortable spending the $399, since I can see it really only ever goes to at lowest $375 so I'm not going to get much better price.

Some 24-36" BNC cables are handy for hooking up to signal sources. You will also want signals of some sort to look at, DC voltage is boring :) You might look into an inexpensive wave generator. Ebay is full of older analog gear that can be had cheaply if the shipping is not to great. Amazon or most any electronics surplus type store will have simple signal generators in the $30 range. You can also generate your own with a 555 timer chip or some jellybean components. The internet is loaded with circuits, but I would avoid the temptation of looking at your 120V 60 Hz wall voltage. It can be done safely if you know what you are doing, or it might blow a channel out of your scope if you don't. Our sponsor Dave has an excellent YouTube video titled How Not to Blowup Your Scope which is required watching for new scope users.

An Arduino can generate square waves of various frequencies with a single line of code:

tone(pin, frequency);

https://github.com/bhagman/Tone#ugly-details

For starting out, the compensation signal on the front panel is a source of a signal.

It can generate a variety of (even arbitrary) waveforms with relatively little code.  Just don't expect great performance .. but if it's just to get familiar with a scope, it's all good.
