Siglent SDS2000 Hacking? Unlocking?
« on: February 22, 2020, 02:26:30 pm »
Hi guys. I bought an unused SDS2102 off ebay for $450. I couldn't pass it up. I know everybody that had one hates them but I thought it might not be so bad. Honestly I came from an old hantek so this seems pretty good. I already did the bandwidth hack by removing the capacitors on the frontend. Also I upgraded to the v2 firmware. It still has the trial version of the options. I would like to keep these options. You can't even buy them anymore because the websites just say discontinued. So I'm wondering has anyone been able to unlock the options. I looked through the thread on the SDS1000x-e but i can't find anything that works. I find it strange that there isn't more info on these older models since they have been out for so long. Someone must have a sure fire way of getting the options working. I'm guessing I have to do a Memdump and read the keys from that...the question is How?

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I tried that. The keys didin't work so I'm guessing it must de different for the sds2000 series. Thank you though :)
I've been serching through the threads for hours but nothing.

OK, bummer.
Have a look here and see if there's something to put you on the right path, there most likely is.

OK. I have read a lot of posts on the thread...my knowledge of programming is very limited so most of it could have been written in greek. Although I think it may have expanded my knowledge enough to get a general procedure to work toward...If I understand correctly the sds2000 and sds2000x are blackfin and the sds2000x-e is ARM using linux. So that make things harder but not impossible. I'll probably need to JTAG into the scope to do the memory dump, and then use some script that some much smarter people than I have made to basically tweeze out the codes from the file and enter it into my scope....well sounds simple in theory but I don't know. It might be easier to buy another scope!! I truly admire the people that can sit down figure this stuff out, blazing the trail for us less gifted people. One thing at a time I guess...getting patched firmware or JTAGing into the scope and getting the memdump will be first.

To add to the mix I've got one of those too but... I can't do any firmware updates on it.. when I try to update it does... nothing. The menu to do the update is.. missing.
The same with setting the time and the date... not there.
Mine is 300MHz.
Can't check on the system status either...
Any way to do the firmware upgrade any other way than through the USB.
Or... any way to enable the menu.
Also... looking for a keyboard for this scope, so maybe somebody has a donor. I mean, both keyboards, the one under the screen and the one on the right with all the menus and the function buttons.
In the upper left corner displays "Siglent Test". Maybe it's some kind of special mode that  has to be exited.

Yes maybe, TBH I can't remember.
Test mode was to enable the PA option when I had my SDS2304 and IIRC a key press sequence could toggle you in and out of Test mode.
Can't quickly find my notes on this and they might be on an old PC HD but I'll keep hunting for you.
Bump me in a few days if you don't hear back.

Found it !  :phew:
To exit Test mode:
If you want to return to Normal mode follow the below Steps:
Enter self calibration interface : Press Utility ’’--> Do self cal in the Page1/3
Then Pressing 'DISPLAY’ once ‘Utility' twice, ‘SAVE / RECALL' three times , the unit will recover to normal mode.

When I press the self cal.. it just goes through the self cal process, all the buttons seem to be disabled at the time, I can't hear any beeps. When I'm out of self cal, I can press the buttons but there is no change. I've tried to restart the scope after the sequence but still the same...

Don't start the Self Cal, just enter the Self Cal UI then run the key presses as listed above.

Hmmm, long sold my SDS2304 so don't have one to check however all other Siglent DSO's Self Cal must be initiated with another button after selecting the Self Cal button.  :-//

Can you enter the Save/Recall menu and do a Secure Erase to remove any previous users settings ?
Dunno what else to suggest.  :-[

No, when I try to do Save or Recal... it does nothing, no choice to erase anything as well.... sucks..
There is definitely a way to do it... maybe I have even older firmware that had different way of getting out of it...
Is there a way to push the firmware update through the usb or lan interface?
I guess I have to get out of this Test mode.. without it I can't really do anything else.
Any way to reset the scope through the terminal?

Yes that might be your only option however I will check with HQ next week when they are back on deck.

You'll need EasyScopeX from the Siglent website and be sure to read the installation notes so to install NIVISA Runtime first that's needed for the USB and LAN connectivity drivers.

I have some trouble understanding your problem since you show an image with "failed to connect" and an image with "connected devices"...

Well, there is no response to my queries, so even as it's shown as connected there is no communication...
You can see on the right, trying to send the *idn? with no response.
I've used the siglent software, I will try with just terminal later on today.
I'm getting failed to connect message after I press OK on the box with connected devices.
So, it looks like it's showing the scope as being connected but fails to communicate with it.
And when I try to send anything to it I'm getting no response.

I was finally able to communicate with the scope. Different PC, different software, different usb cable.
I will try to set the new router for the network... so I can find the ip address of the scope, I can't look it up on the scope itself. Maybe/probably because it's in test mode I can't access those functions.
Still wasn't able to do the firmware upgrade...
