Simple fan replacement for DHO800/900
« on: February 28, 2024, 10:35:47 am »
When I received my scope I wasn't surprised to hear the fan was loud, as it was reported by Dave in his videos, but after an hour or two my fan died and would only spin up if I flicked it around.
So I decided to replace it, and in my stock I found a 40mm double-ball bearing fan. It turns out that these are much quieter than the stock one, and result in an adequate level of cooling.
The issue is that these fans are not available caseless, so some modification is required.
After cutting off the case I tried just trapping the end of the three legs under the screws, but it's not dependable, so I generated a simple 3D print that can be used as a mount. You simply cut the legs off the fan completely down to the body, apply a dot of your favorite glue into the 3D print, and stick the fan in there, guiding the wires behind the small wire cover. This then screws in using the existing screws, and using the fans I bought results in a fairly quiet solution.
My 3D model was made for the fans I sourced from AliExpress, as they only took a few days to arrive.
The fans I use are here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001695012637.html, and are the 12V Ball 6500RPM model, at AU$14 for two.

I uploaded the 3D part to printables.com at https://www.printables.com/model/785002-rigol-dho800dho900-fan-adapter.
If anyone wants access to the original 3D model to adapt it for any other fans, just drop me a line and I'll share it out.
