Looks like they are copying Instek ... I dunno who INstek are copying |
| nctnico:
It wouldn't be the first time Siglent and GW Instek sold an identical power supply. |
| rf-loop:
I can not see any kind of copy. Oh well USB connector and its symbol is same. Both are made in China. Other is like from museum and other is bit more new technology. |

@rf-loop Hi - hope you are keeping well. You forgot to mention - they also have the same rubber 'feet' - positioned at same offsets AND most importantly the power ON/OFF switch is in same location :-DD Seriously - it’s all a matter of definition of what is a copy. Perhaps in China it’s not considered a copy is it’s not a 'clone' - i.e. an exact lookalike In other countries - they protect their respective industrial designs - which encompass the general shape, materials used in the finish, colour schemes, layout of controls, alignment of front panel air vents, etc, etc. Industrial designers are very fussy and get paid lots of $ A good example is Apple Computer - they pay a fortune to some guy / gal sitting in some jazzy office and sketching some (what they consider) breakthrough concept in what THEY think is the next big idea on how the item should look. With Test equipment - it’s probably not that extreme - but I guess some companies DO PAY lots of $$ to differentiate themselves from others and establish their 'mark' with the consumer. It is very easy for many companies in China to simply 'skip' this step in the design process - and simply choose something which already is / has been established with a consumer. A new product which sort-off looks similar - becomes 'easy on the eyes' and is likely to be less critical with the consumer - who is already familiar with something which has the same general features (not clone). So like you said it’s not a copy - but is similar. It is difficult to be innovative and make a NEW shape to challenge the traditional shapes of products - including layouts of displays / terminals / and buttons. The danger here is that it might not 'catch' the acceptance of the targeted customer, BUT on the other hand if it does (slim chance) it will then become the 'standard' - so it will be likely that 'others' will then copy that design for the same reasons their design was copied. So there are no winners here - except the consumer - who might get a new and innovative design if more companies refrained from copying existing industrial designs. Just my opinion ... Take Care & Be Safe BTW ... the UK is about to be locked down (whatch the news - Boris will try to blame the people) TOTALLY as covid-19 is spreading like wildfire - R is reported to be 2.6 in London - but the government is publishing Average figure for whole of England of 1.4 - misleading the public like always (sorry - no politics , no covid comments - but I am angry!) |
