Searched on the net for a cheap small opentype 3 or 5 amp variac in the USA., but could not find any. If anyone comes across one please let me know. I want to build it in a box with a transformer

Trouble is, a 3 or 5 A variac isn't small or cheap.  They weigh several pounds and the cost isn't trivial.  The smallest variac with which I am familiar is rated around 1 Ampere but that's not a very useful rating.  Superior type 10B comes to mind.
