Title: Some questions about hacking the DS1054Z
Post by: eeguy on September 11, 2016, 03:52:07 am
Hi, it looks like the DS1054Z is a popular one due to the low cost. Can all the DS1054Z sold in North America be hacked to get full functionality? Can the hacking be reversed in case I need to send it to the company for repairing? Is it easy to hack it to get all the full features? After it is hacked to the maxed version with all unlocked features (what features actually?), what the new specifications will be like? How is the hacked DS1054Z with all the free unlocked features compared with the GDS-2104A, 2204A, 2102A, Keysight InfiniiVision 2000 X-Series and the 3000T X-Series?

Don't use the DSFR code (all options) but DSER, this one doesn't include the buggy 500uV/div

Not "buggy", it's just not implemented in hardware.

(I'm not sure why it's even on that list, it must be part of the firmware that's shared with higher end models)

Answer: Worse.

That's obvious really - it's a fraction of the price!

And ... based on what you've said in the other threads you've started on this subject, you don't need what all those others offer. You just need a basic 'scope.

You want to pay more because you feel the DS1054Z is too cheap for you? Go talk to an oscilloscope salesman, not a bunch of sensible engineers.

After hacking to upgrade the bandwidth to the maximum, do I need to upgrade the probes?

No. The probes are still fine up to 150 MHz.

Is there a list of specifications of the hacked DS1054Z with all the trial software enabled?

Each of the feature codes, like DSER, brings in a set of capabilities.  There is no point in enabling just a couple of features; if you're going to hack the scope, might as well do it all.

After the hack, your scope will identify itself as a DS1104X - the 100 MHz version of the DS1054Z
There will be 15 features enabled (which I won't list) including decoding Serial, I2C, SPI, increased memory depth, increased bandwidth, etc

This stuff is all over Google

Recently purchased a Rigol DS1054z. Today tried to activate the options did not work! Probably for my firmware **00.04.04.SP1** **Riglol 1.03 d** no keys. Tried DSER, DSFR and all alone while the donkey did not say that today attempts ended.
Try after 12 hours. :music:

Is it DS1054Z or DS1074Z plus or something else? Try downloading keygen to you PC and generating key locally.

P.S. connect to the scope from PC, you can enter keys via terminal, so you can copy paste :)

Some people seem to have trouble with the online keygen. Try downloading it.

Recently purchased a Rigol DS1054Z. It arrived today with all options enabled by time 35 Hrs, 58 min.
Out of the box, my firmware was **00.04.04.SP1** so I did not attempt to update it.
I went to the online keygen, entered my serial and DSER, used the scope editor screen to input the provided generated new code and applied it.  All options are now enabled as "Official".  100% successful.  Very happy.

I've been reading eevblog and watching the youtube vids for many years.  I finally registered just so I could say that the DS1054Z hack worked perfectly and to also say thanks to everyone.

I got the Rigol DS1054Z yesterday and hacked it immediately. It worked fine. Then I managed to lock the 'Auto' key, which, as I found out to my horror, can not be unlocked within the scope itself. So I connected it to the PC and after much trying and research I managed to unlock the Auto feature. You can read that here: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/rigol-ds1054z-auto-key-locked/ (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/rigol-ds1054z-auto-key-locked/)

I really LOVE this scope!! It is awesome!  I first wanted to buy the Siglent SDS1202X-E Series 200MHz but I'm glad I went with this one. The Rigol has more memory depth and 4 channels!! (Killer Feature! Haha).  If you're thinking about buying an entry level scope get this one.

Why 'horror'? The auto button is a bad thing.

PS: I didn't know you could lock out the auto button. I think I might do it...

Yes, I know it is. The horror wasn't that much about the function itself but more the idea that I had "damaged" my new scope. I mean, if the button is there then I want it to work aswell. And because I'm still getting the hang of this scope I find it a useful function to have. As I get more proficient with the scope I recon the need for it will diminish.

You made a smart decision on most bang for the buck concept, nothing having a better balance of price/performance on market

Why lock out the "Auto" config button? If you don't have novices using the scope who might try to rely on the button instead of setting the controls manually, there's no reason to lock it. It might occasionally be useful, even to the expert scoposcopist. I've actually used mine... maybe three times, in the two years I've been using the scope daily.

If you use DSEA - is it essentially ALL OPTIONS minus the 500uV Vertical?

Or if you want all options, you have to do all codes except DSFR?

DSER is all except 500uV/div. You can do it in one shot with that code.

great. thanks.

How does one Undo the upgrades back to stock?

I think DSAA will do that, but it's not clear why you'd ever need or want to do that.

Even if my Rigol for some reason has to go back to them for service, it's going back with all the options enabled... I strongly suspect they know about the riglol site/process by now... ;)
