tds744a not completing boot
« on: October 01, 2022, 03:28:40 pm »
hi everyone.
im new to the site and to the scope journey.
i was given this scope made by tektronics. when i turn it on, starts to boot led lights turn on for a brief moment then the display shows only a horizontal line on the top, both ends of that line have a tiny vertical line-ends.
no other item shows up. no grid no nothing. can someone please tell me if is any solution to this, or is it gone to the point of no return.
and what other info is needed to help identify the problem.
thank you all.

Did you try to connect an external (VGA) monitor?
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

In that case you'll need to dig deeper. The fact you see the same on the internal and external monitor (at least that is what I assume you mean by your last post) is an indication the display part is still working.

Tektronix has a component service manual for a similar DSO of theirs: https://download.tek.com/manual/070971003.pdf It is not 100% identical but you can use the diagnostics and diagrams to get an idea of what you are dealing with.

im new to scopes and i find them very complex instrument.  what about the digital  segment  inside the scope. would that tell me anything? and also the dip switches any particular on/ off position?
thank you again.

Setting the diagnostic dipswitches and look at the 7 segment display what code it produces will certainly help to diagnose the problem but from there you'll need to understand what is going on and what may be the actual problem. First check to do is whether the diagnostic dipswitches are set correctly for normal operation and whether all connectors / cables are seated properly. Also make sure to check whether all supply voltages are within their specified limits.

So basically:
1: check all connectors (are all cables that should be there fitted and are they mounted correctly?). IIRC you can connect the cables / boards that distribute power & logic signals the wrong way or swap them causing the oscilloscope not to work.

2: set the dipswitches to normal operation

3: check all power supply voltages

4: perform diagnostics using the dipswitches & 7 segment display if the previous steps didn't cause the oscilloscope to work normally
