I recently obtained a good condition TDS744A, working fine (also the 1M option). Now I need to work with some very slow signals (like 0.1 Hz) & want to put the scope in a "roll" mode or "strip chart" mode...so the sensor waveform will just continuously pass along the screen like an old strip chart (perhaps showing 20 to 60 seconds on screen). I've done this with other Tek scopes, but can't figure out how to do it on the 744A..is this something buried in a menu, or a multi-step setup? I just want to be able to monitor the shape of what's going on (not trying to read out precise numerical values, with cursors or anything like that). There is nothing specific to trigger on in my case.

AFAIK the TDS744A doesn't have roll mode. What you could do is set the persistence to a few seconds in auto trigger mode.

That's an "ok" tip, but how could such a high-end scope not have a roll mode (even bare-bones like monochrome TDS410 have it).....having it erase the screen, you loose the continuity...and can't really see the progress of the waveform (such as what happened just before the screen refresh). Do you know which Tek scopes lack a roll mode?

Any reason it has to be Tek?

AFAIK none of the Tek TDS scopes from the 5xx, 6xx or 7xx series have roll mode. As I recall, Tek made mention of this on answer to a question on their own site (FAQ), saying that since these scopes were mainly expected to be used for high speed work, they didn't see fit to include a roll mode.
I have two TDS7xx scopes, and would have liked to have had a roll mode, even though it's not something I use super frequently - certainly it shouldn't have been very hard for them to implement.

If true, that's quite ridiculous that none of the scopes have a roll mode, even when much lesser scope 10 years prior did! Is there a way to upgrade or add one (perhaps a patch). Is there a list showing which Tek scopes DO have a roll mode? I am now rather disappointed with the 744, since I often need to look at slowly varying signals, like drift, etc. I suppose I could use a $20 usb logger.
