Teardown of SilverCrest H14338 "UV monitor"
« on: September 06, 2024, 05:28:22 pm »
Not exactly EE test equipment, but interesting piece if you need to measure if UV A for resin curing or need to check if UV lamp for lizard is working...
I got it cheaper than UV photodiode at Digi-Key (photodiode alone, without shipping) so I considered it a success.

Dongle is small, not greatly done and powered from CR2032 so quite handy. Documentation is quite horrible, not mentioning any measurement qualities, only UV index and rough estimation of estimated time safe to be exposed to UV. No wavelengths, no powers (mW/m2), nothing measurable.

It is entirely blind to visible light from LED bulbs, also for near UV - around 420 nm. Sunlight through double glazed window also is not visible. As expected.

Inside - nothing particularly fancy, including MCU under resin blob. Except sensor - I was curious what it is.
Obviously no marking. But accidentally, I know how GUVA-S12SD looks like, you can do comparison yourself. As GUVA-S12SD is sensitive in 240 nm to 370 nm so far from "normal photodiodes"

As expected, sensor is quite directional. It is easy to get UV index reading between 1 and 4 just by changing angle. Photos taken around 11:00, UV index = 4 early September is not impossible.

Where did you purchase from?

Aliexpress has some for $10-20 but not sure what sensor its using https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806167858753.html

Silvercrest is LIDL brand. A large groceries (mainly) shop network, German origin.

KF-90 from Aliexpress - no idea what is inside.

Now, if I would like get UV photodiode itself cheaply, I would go for things like "UV sensor" daughter boards like this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32242855827.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.3.c0db6e1eTWS4wi&algo_pvid=267bfb36-1a9a-49f7-a26e-cb7fa495c80d&algo_exp_id=267bfb36-1a9a-49f7-a26e-cb7fa495c80d-1&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21PLN%217.67%213.91%21%21%211.94%210.99%21%40211b815c17257152346835332ef5f9%2151679812052%21sea%21PL%210%21ABX&curPageLogUid=PzofzDeD5Nb4&utparam-url=scene%3Asearch%7Cquery_from%3A
For more reliable applications I still would go to reseller like Farnell or TME.
