| Tek 2215 Scope Usage With Probe Set to 1X? |

I am working on a Teac A4010GSL tape recorder that has some noisy transistor crackle. FIRST, keep in mind that this recorder has no power output for speakers. This means that the so-called " final output transistor" is still a low-level device meant to amplify only enough to plug into my Pioneer receiver tape input. My Tek 2215 is equipped with a cheap Chinese 1x to 10x switchable probe. As a rule I always leave it on 10x. I'm having a hard time finding where the transistor crackle is in my Teac. It does show up at the collector of the last transistor with the scope set to full sensitivity, but just barely. But that doesn't mean that it's the final transistor that is the faulty part. There are 5 or 6 transistors before it. If I were to switch the probe to 1x to probe for my crackle in earlier transistor stages, would I have a chance to find my transistor crackle, or would general noise fool me into thinking that I was seeing my crackle problem? Sometimes a soldering iron and freeze spray work better than a scope finding transistor niose problems. I have many different probes but my main use is a modified P6006 1x probe and a 2225 for tracking audio signals. Jeff |

Well today I gave it a shot and set the probe to 1X and turned down the vertical gain. Guess what? It turned up a number of noisy transistors that the 10X setting wasn't showing. |
