Title: Tek 2232 Noise reduction
Post by: Wh1sper on April 03, 2014, 04:31:32 pm
As everybody know who is owning and using a tek 2232 the fan is a very noisy item.
Ok I'm not using the scope every minute but when I'm using it for debugging audio gear it is a bit of contra productive because the noise is disturbing.
So, before I open it and looking into the scope I'm curious  if anybody has doing it and substitute the noisy fan against a low noise item?

Just to be clear, no the fan seams intact its no mechanical problem, it sounds like simply to high blow and to fast rpm.
One possibility is just to cut out every second line of the fan grill.
I just hope for a modern PC fan replacement which could be adopted.

Greets from Northern Germany, guys :-)

The fans on my 2232 and other 22xx oscilloscopes are almost completely silent and the only way I can know that they are running it to reach back and feel for the warm air flow.

All I have found in the net speaks about heave noise like mine...
Are your gears Original or eventually already modified or renewed?

Mine all have the original fans but some of them may have had the power supply capacitors replaced.

It occurs to me though that there are two different 2232 designs; the older one uses a custom Tektronix tubeaxial fan like the other 22xx series oscilloscopes but the late 2232 may use a standard box fan and it could be noisier.

I just checked again and while I can hear my 2232 fan, it does not compete with my PC as far as noise.

I have not done it on a 22xx series oscilloscope but just oiling and adjusting the fan bearings if possible could improve the situation.
