HP3563A upgrade with Newscope 5 display unit.
« on: January 07, 2017, 10:23:14 pm »
The HP3563A Control Systems Analyser in my lab was not getting much use, for two reasons - one is the fan, which is so loud that it is impossible to sit next to the unit without incurring a bad headache after an hour or so, and the second is a somewhat aged CRT display with blurry lines, which has also developed a strange kind of a whistling sound for first 30-40 minutes of operation. I was planning to upgrade the display with the Newscope 5 LCD screen available for some time now and the display has arrived over a month ago. At last today I've found some time to do it, as well as to check the type of fan I need to get (and to promptly order it from RS as the exact model is still available after 25 years).

I guess I will be using the analyser a lot after I'll replace the fan in few days time. Here are some photos - I have to say the upgrade went very smoothly and the instructions for the display unit are very good.

Cheers

Alex

That is how the display looked a while ago:

Now to the rest:

So, its now color- that's really nice.

How does it determine what colors to use where?

According to the manufacturer, the colours chosen are close to what later similar HP/Agilent equipment used. There are four colour schemes (user selectable by rotating the focus pot at the back of the analyser), including the original mono green.

Very impressive result - I'd consider the Newscope LCD kit for my 3562A (same issue, gets a bit smeary once you turn the intensity up far enough to see anything) were it not for having a spare (NOS) CRT stowed away in a box under the bench (I'd feel guilty for not using it).

Cheers,

Karl.

Drop some oil into the hub.  Might solve your noise issue.

Here is the fan   :) .

Maybe - and not for very long anyway. The replacement fan will be here on Tuesday, so I would rather do it properly  8) .
