I wouldn't remove the topic.  The advice given here is just as sound for someone else who might encounter a similar issue down the line.  It's great stuff, and it would be a shame for it to disappear just because this particular repair attempt didn't have a good outcome.

The first paragraph of my first post had such a warning but maybe I was not emphatic enough.

There were a lot of suggested simplified non-destructive tests which he did not follow through on that might have revealed the problem.  The communications channel was pretty indirect so maybe he never saw them.
