What is the purpose of that bar thingy on the Tektronix scope cart? I am referring to the bar on the top shelf that says open on it.

Lock a scope on the cart, so it can't fall off. I have a similar cart (model 3) with a 7704a on it.

I have a similar scope cart (Model 3) that came with my Tek 2225. For the life of me I can't figure out what that bar does. I assume it is a locking mechanism specifically for certain models and not compatible with others. It still works fine as a cart though. I'd be interested in hearing more information about it as well.

yes, a locking system for the heavy scopes. E.g. tek 7000 series. Found a picture on the net from an underside:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tektronix-7633-Oscilloscope-w-Plug-ins-7A18N-7A12-7B53A-/251266581089 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tektronix-7633-Oscilloscope-w-Plug-ins-7A18N-7A12-7B53A-/251266581089)
The bar grabs into the plastic pieces in the middle of the underside, inbetween the front and rear feet.
Then you can tilt the top part of the cart, without the electrons scope falling out.
