Title: tektronix scopes trivia questions
Post by: GiskardReventlov on February 22, 2014, 09:18:43 pm
I've seen on some of the older scopes there's a serial number on the front and below that some scopes have another label that says "Opt 01" or Mod VW (maybe Mod WV).  What do these mean? Is there an option installed?

Looks like they took the plastic back off for rackmount, is that round black connector the end of the CRT?
Seems like it's susceptible to getting bumped or misadjusted,

I'm was sure that Option 1 was the DMM option, but this may only apply to the 24xx series. Option 1 on a 22xx series is probably the VXI interface option.
Serial numbers beginning with "B" denote United States (Beaverton) models.

That round black connector is the CRT connector. It's a bit careless of them to loose the back. One may need to remove it to get the instrument in and out of the bay, but I would have had it put back on when installed in the bay anyway to prevent damage.

IMHO someone didn't read the rackmount instruction manual. Why on earth would you remove the back? Now there are only 2 screws in the bottom holding the scope in it's case.

I retract my previous statement about removing the back to facilitate bay mounting. It is clearly totally unnecessary to remove the back with this type of bay mounting system.
I was thinking about other Tektronix bay mounting systems where the outer case is actually removed and the naked instrument slides into the case which is specifically designed for bay mounting. The instrument then looks like it was originally designed as a bay mounted piece of kit rather than just having a pair of 'ears' nailed to the side of it.

VXI is waveform from the quick search I did, but I still don't see anything about mod vw (or mod wv)

Ok, yes the metal tab looks to be bent and that entire part looks like it's an adjuster. For the electron beam??
Looks too exposed.

One thought was that they removed it to take pictures, but that doesn't make sense. The back is very shiny though.
Maybe the back was broken and so they removed it.  Or maybe it lived in a clean environment.

Yeah there's supposed to be a cover over the CRT socket. Sadly "previous owner was a moron" is very common with auctioned equipment.
The caution is, that if they were stupid enough to lose the CRT rear cover, what _other_ stupid things did they do to the equipment?
