Tektronix TCA-1MEG failed
« on: May 07, 2021, 09:36:20 am »
Hi i bought a TCA-1MEG adapter on ebay and when it arrived and i connected it to ch1 (tried all channels) ....it gave me the popup  like in the attachment ...
( the seller was only  intent a partly refund....)

because for me it is a new adapter, that is why this model of adapter is a unknown type for my TDS7404 because it is the first and i hope only one.

Anybody have this error also or know how to fix it?  Did i use the wrong procedure or is it a failed adapter, which component(s) needs to be swapped out?

tips and help wanted.

there are two components which may course the problem, i think.
a chip called  PCF-8574AT  - Remote 8-bit I/O expander for I2C-bus with interrupt
and i found a (by now famous :-( ) ST- 24C16WP -  16-Kbit serial I2C bus EEPROM.

If it isn't recognised, then it sounds like the I2C eeprom might be faulty or corrupted.  It is probably not too hard to connect some wires to it and try read it with an I2C adapter/eeprom reader.

There seems to be very little info about reversing the Tekconnect/VPI interface on the web.  A few mentions of similar Tek probe interfaces with I2C are in this blog post which might help you confirm the data looks somewhat valid: https://debugmo.de/2010/03/probe-hacking-part-2/

There is a teardown by forum user TiN at https://xdevs.com/review/tca_1meg/ but without much detail as he probably didn't need to do any repairs.  You could try message him to see if he knows anything more, or has a dump of the eeprom from his TCA-1MEG: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?u=26015
