Title: Tektronix TLA6402 68 Channel Logic Analyzer - help?
Post by: keepitsimple on May 15, 2022, 06:24:57 am
Sorry if I'm in the wrong area, here.  I posted this in the sale section earlier, but someone on Reddit suggested I try this particular section of the forums because it's a really specific item.  I'm actually hoping someone can help me figure out a fair price for this thing.  There is one of these with no extras on eBay right now for 9 grand - whether that itself is fair or not, I have no idea.  I know absolutely nothing about logic analyzers.

The one I have includes what seems to be about $2,500 worth of probes and extra gear, plus a Tektronix cart made for this thing.  It's got:
2 bags TPP1000 probes
P5910 probe or connector thing
accessory kit 020-2662-01
dust protector
documents and manuals
keyboard/mouse and cover

It looks great - clean as hell and boots up fine.  I'm not even positive if the thing was used.

This seems to be a fairly niche item, and from what I can tell, most people buy much smaller logic analyzers for under 2 or 300 bucks.  Should I list this stuff to match the eBay guy's price? Or would I just end up sitting on it for months?  I could use the cash and am not too greedy - maybe I should just start an auction at around 5k and hope it goes higher?

Excuse the messy background - my tiny office/warehouse is packed and needs a good cleaning.
Any advice or input would be appreciated - thanks!

It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. A rough guess I'd say a few hundred bucks to the right buyer, there is not much demand for logic analyzers these days, I paid $25 for my 128 channel HP logic analyzer and spent another $200 on probes, mine is only 100MHz but I use it to work on vintage equipment which I think is probably what most people are using a logic analyzer for. Ignore the asking prices on ebay, many of them are pure fantasy and the stuff just sits forever. Search by sold items and see what similar units have actually sold for. I could be completely off base but I would be absolutely shocked to see any logic analyzer sell for $5k, they just have very limited applications these days since modern gear is so tightly integrated. A high performance model like this was state of the art maybe a decade ago, but now it's faster than needed for vintage gear but not fast enough to debug modern high speed systems.

5k is unlikely, as far more versatile TLA7012 sell for few K$ lately, often even less. I got mine for $600 and bunch of modules including PCIe Gen3 one for few hundred $. TLAs also have no support from Tek anymore, as lineup officially killed :(.
