And the ugly duckling turns into, well, a much less ugly duckling... Couldn't quite get ALL the staining out, but some long soaks with Goof Off Gunk and Adhesive Remover Gel followed by some attention with a Mr. Clean magic eraser got the majority of it off. I didn't want to soak the area by the front panel label too much for fear it would soak under and ruin label, so some of the staining in the nooks and crannies and edges by the label aren't as clean as I'd like them to be, but relative to how it showed up I think it looks pretty good. For a refresher - as it arrived: And as it currently looks: And it's at least partially functional. I'm waiting for the manual to really try to wring it out, but at least it indicates voltage in the ball park of what's applied: -Pat |

Pat, that looks great! :-+ I'm surprised you got such good results with the "Goof Off". I've used it and was never happy with the results. I found "Goo Gone" to work much better. I have yet to try those Mr Clean Magic Erasers. I may pick up one next shopping trip. Edit....Papa Smurf's Shade Tree Painting Service has been mothballed. :-DD |

I think the key was letting the gel sit for 30-45 minutes or more. Most of the crud came off with an initial soak in warm water, Dawn dishwashing liquid and a splash of non-sudsing ammonia; this was followed by Windex and a paper towel, then I tried some isopropyl on the remaining stains but that didn't touch them. After that, moved on to the Goof Off (also tried some Goo-Gone first without much result, but in its defense I didn't let it soak like I later did the Goof Off.) I'd spray a bit on (it's a gel, it'd lay maybe 1-2 mm thick), then go away for a half an hour or so. Upon return, wipe most of it off with a paper towel, scrubbing as I did so, then hitting the still darkened spots gently with the melamine sponge (magic eraser). I've found that it's best to use the magic erasers carefully, as they CAN take thin conversion coatings off if used too aggressively, and can also put very light scratches in paint. In this case, it didn't appear to harm the plastic too much, but it's also a slightly rough texture - wouldn't do that to smooth plastic as it would more than likely affect the appearance. -Pat <edit to add - it's cute, but I'm not gonna lie - I still like my nixies much better.> |

I have decided that life is too short for this crap, have opened a claim and am working out how to burn 74S267's at the moment and will load the damn code in myself. --- End quote --- You said 74S267 but is that the correct part? I know 74S287 to be a PROM with 256x4. |
