Damn...good job!  :-+ I wish I had gotten that lucky with my 465. Oh well....parts of it live on in the 465B.  :-+

Edit...I call the 465B "Frankenscope".  ;D

Ok had another "I'll be screwed if I'm paying for something" moment and made another adapter. It's Monday (I hate Mondays, so why not just pile on the misery) so this is a "was made from crap lying around" project.  I need to get CHIRP going as my new Baofeng UV-5R from Banggood just arrived and otherwise I'd have to wait for the cable to show up too, which is just stupid.

(SNIP)
Did I really have ANY choice about what to put there?!?  :-DD

mnem
Yes, this should feel uncomfortably familiar.
Splash message was the first thing I set up on mine  :-DD

That's probably much better than the official serial cable as well which requires you to pretty much dry hump it in or it barely works :)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/142864170537

Welp, the programming cable I ordered at the same time as my UV-5R was waiting for me in my mailbox; must've forgotten to check it Saturday.

Tried it just now, and guess I won the lottery; cuz it fits in smooth and easy, and makes reliable contact with a positive click as its plugged in. Installed all by itself using the signed  CH340 driver already in Windows 10; tried several times reading from/writing to the radio without issue.  I got it for $3.59 cuz of a random fleaBay sale, so I don't even mind that I'd already made one from parts. :-+

I've posted the QCode off the baggie in case it helps somebody else find the same one.

Cheers,

mnem

Hours of pissing off hams coming up  :-DD ... my local 2m guys are all dicks so I've given up on that for now. Concentrating on CW and FT8 now. It's annoying really because I really want 2m to be cool. So much potential there.

465 reassembled and working properly ...

@bd139, excellent sleuthing there, so it looks as if you finally have a good 465, so have you solved the housing of it yet or is it going back on the Bay as a earner?

I need an antenna tuner so this one might go on ebay to fund it to be honest.  I enjoy fixing things. Once they're fixed the excitement is gone. Seems a shame to keep them prisoner when someone could put them to use.

BTW the TDS210 is the keeper so far. I love that little scope. It's just perfect.

Well and truly fucked. Damn, dude... I was REALLY hoping your luck had changed with this one. No hope of kit-bashing between boards in this one and the parts mule? Yes, I realize that this way lies madness... but... well... look where you are. ;)

...found the butt side of a resistor with a tubular ceramic, R49/C49 shorting against ground.  :palm: Bent it back a little away from ground and you know what? It bloody works. Miracle. Now the only thing that doesn't work on it that I can find so far is the probe indicator. Probably a duff transistor or cap that. Usually is.

Happy bd139 at last. Persistence pays off :-+   Edit: fixed probe indicator as well. 100R series resistor shorting against panel. Sorted!

SuhWEET!   :-+  Does that mean this is "your" 465 now?

my surviving 5325 is an "A" version and has the oval hp power jack.

the one for auction is a "B" and has an iec jack.

guess my only hope is that neo snipes it from under me.

Then you have no hope, just jump. I'd be interested except its $140 and this is the middle of hamfest so i am currently as broke as a pauper without a pot to piss in. Not even joking, every spare dime is marked for a hamfest.

Yeah that hasn't changed. At least here in UK. It's that or the local net, Sunday at 9PM which is "who died and who fell of a ladder this week". Plus ten minutes of pro Brexit rant (MAGA equivalent people here).

Yep aware of that. I haven't gone through cal yet. I expect it to be way out. I'm not going to do cal until it is thermally stable and operating reliably.

In fact some annoyance in that department. Had it burning in for the last two hours and channel 1 has gone slightly dicky. Will poke around in the PGA part of the attenuator later if I get some time.

Edit: actually fuck it. Large box of antenna bits has just arrived so I'm going to make up some cables and have the day off from scope fixing :)

Here on the East Coast there is a group of hams on 80M, specifically 3.885Mhz, who broadcast exclusively on AM. These guys are "real" hams, not "appliance operators". They design and build their own transmitters or take an old boatanchor like a Heath DX-100 and make them sound better than most broadcast AM. Stunning audio from some of these guys. Of course that takes a lot of bandwidth...as much as 10Khz. The SSB guys don't like it but they have the rest of 75M band so they really can't complain. And the AM guys call SSB "slop bucket". But there's an unwritten agreement that if you're on SSB stay away from 3.885 and the AM'ers always park on that frequency.

Those sort of guys are usually OK. Few and far between here. They tend to actually want to operate correctly and as you say, know how to build and drive their kit properly. We have a similar thing on 1933KHz top band here but LSB not AM. If you get on Hack Green WebSDR ( http://hackgreensdr.org:8901/ ) you can listen to them without an antenna in the evenings. Quite funny bunch and know what they're doing. Top band is a massive barrier to entry here as it's virtually impossible getting a decent antenna up due to our small property sizes so it keeps the muppets out.

Thing that pisses me off about SSB is some people in Italy pointing over us in the UK at US with massive beam antennas and 1KW+ burners chasing DX with so much overmodulation and splatter without even listening first. Literally just half way through a QSO with someone over the channel in France and "CQ! DX! CQ! DX!" in broken Italian accent followed by their call 9 million times. Grr.

CW is like a razor blade cutting through that shit.

I can perfectly understand that. The first time I got my hands on a TDS220 (that might be some 15 years ago), it was love at first sight. Still have it, talked my former boss to leave it with me when I left that company in exchange for continued support.

Back on TEA. Probes and batteries for VTVM arrived today. Can recommend KK4HXJ's kits to anyone. They're really good quality.

Hmm, interesting note on his probe kits about voltage maybe present on the other probe while in use? Surely the original meters came with an additional probe for AC use so the you did not have to leave the DC probe connected in order to make use the only ground/common connection. The meters come with a Common and AC/Ohms jacks lus plus the DC which also by design connects to common?

That is one problem that my conversion eliminates as you only have the usual 2 probes and they both have to be used to make any measurement.

All functions have the same common lead. There is no possibility for the AC probe and DC probe to become conductive to the other as they have different front ends and switching. This is true of the V-7A at least. I haven't looked at earlier units which might be hooky as hell.

The only nasty failure mode I'm aware of is if you connect a voltage source to it in X1 ohms range it'll smoke the 9.1 ohm resistor in the divider chain.

It will smoke that for sure  :-DD

Just seems sort of odd if that was the intention for the inclusion of an additional common 4mm banana socket that was connected to the chassis as is the 1/4" jack socket for the DC probe, that was the main reason for my modification as it is all to easy for the entire chassis and case be connected to the live terminal of the AC supply and thus present a hazard. Even with the DC the chassis is connected so there is also the possibility of the chassis of the meter being connected to say -ve when measuring a DC rail on a piece of gear but the DUT may have its chassis connected to the +ve and the if the chassis touch, you have a problem Houston.

That is a very real problem when you have small bench like we both have but less of one if you massive expanse of space like "xmo" and can keep the meter on a shelf, but still a problem if the meter should get pulled off the shelf, its hardly a boat anchor so its another possibility that I was anxious to avoid. However if that was to happen then I expect its not really an issue as the case could cause many shorts if it fell into the open circuitry of the DUT. Whoever said we lived in an ideal world was a liar  :-DD

OT: Of Aardvarks and Prime Ministers, Part 3.1 : You Don't Bring Me Flowers
« Reply #15872 on: September 04, 2018, 05:47:55 pm »
Continued from Part 3:

Cerebus slips away to speak with the Seargeant-at-Arms by the doorway, giving explicit instructions that he and his men should observe carefully but allow the brawl to continue, only interrupting where serious injury is imminent. He nods to the manager of the dining hall to engage full damage control mode before bolting down the hallway and outside to join the fray; he really needed to wrap it up before everyone in the dining hall notices...

Part 3.1 : You Don't Bring Me Flowers

Cerebus washed quickly and changed out of blood-soaked trousers; his second-favorite vest was at this point a lost cause. He returned to the dining hall to find cleanup almost finished, and with the help of the dining hall staff, nearly every patron had been restored to pre-brawl condition. Most had resumed their games and were gabbling and guffawing as thery bragged of their exploits during the diversion with gusto.

The few that remained displeased were being attended to by staff; there was little doubt the event would be remembered favorably. Cerebus' table had been closed out in his absence to the satisfaction of all involved, and he sat in elsewhere to continue the tournament without incident until only he and one other remained.

Lord Julius drummed fingers on the table with feigned impatience; he hated to see the earth-pig appear at ease. Cerebus didn't even notice as he pulled out his chair; he was calculating the cost of the evening's excitement. Thanks to a number of patrons who gambled considerably more than the minimum buy-in, he was still well in the black. He chuckled softly as he seated himself.

"Well... aren't you just unbearably pleased with yourself?" the prime minister demanded.

"Cerebus has already had a good night." he snorted, shuffling and cutting the cards. "So, it would seem, have all our patrons."

"Yes... I heard many of them... entirely too pleased for folks who'd just been cleaned out." Julian responded with a chuckle of his own as he dealt.

"You know, we could make a regular thing of this... have a proper gambling club with membership and everything." Cerebus cajoled, looking at his down card and placing a pawful of chips in the center of the table. "It could actually be fun, not being at each other's throats ALL the time."

"I refuse to belong to any club that would have me as a member." the other remarked sharply, puffing on his cigar as he matched the bet. "But it could be... not horrible."

Cerebus raised the ante, "Stand." he said confidently. Julius snorted.

"All in." he replied, pushing his chips to the center of the table. Cerebus attempted to match with his pile, but came up short. Julian grinned, until the aardvark placed the contract on the table, still bearing both their seals.

"Last chance." Cerebus smiled slyly. "All the marbles, or...?" Julian stared at the earth-pig intently; his demeanor revealed nothing but profound contentment.

"Ehhh... lets keep to our agreement." he sighed, confounded. "DRAW. Split the pot, game over."

"Yes, game over." the furry warlord replied, putting the contract back in his vest pocket while they divided the chips. When they were done, Julius snorted, flipping over the hidden cards on the table. The aardvark's down card was a Mage.

"You had me either way." Julius slapped the table in annoyance.

"Cerebus certainly did." he snorted. "And you don't know the half of it."

"Ehhh?" the prime minister queried.

"The contract... in the interest of security and to make sure all our patrons make it home without being waylaid on the highway... it authorizes all payments in Tri-Crowns from both our cities." he chuckled, referring to the global coinage that each of the three city-states had agreed upon over a decade prior and then taken turns in sabotaging over the years to their own benefit.

"But Serrea... Duke Leonardi will nev..." Julius started.

"...Has already signed on." The aardvark interrupted. "He's been having "problems" with his money-changers. Seems he doesn't like how they manage the exchange rates between our cities; they never seem to be in his favor."

"But it will never work... we took over 60,000 crowns out of circulation here..." the Prime Minister argued.

"Actually, we put over 80,000 Tri-Crowns INTO circulation." the earth-pig replied. "and that's just you and Cerebus, between our bankrolls and winnings. Between all the players involved and side-betting, nearly 400,000 crowns changed from local currencies to Tri-Crowns. More than half of that came as gold and jewels from outlying areas and baronies; I expect they were looking to launder some of their plunder. Our Tri-City banks will have a surplus, and you stand to make another tidy fortune in just a few years."

Julius face-palmed. He was in business with the earth-pig, whether he liked it or not.

Cerebus' contentment grew tenfold, bordering on actual pleasure, as he spotted a particularly large and glittery emerald necklace in the pot. He stuffed it in his vest pocket as he turned back to Julian and spoke.

"Cerebus believes he will go have a bath."

mnem
" O Oysters," said the Carpenter "You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again...?" But answer came there none;
and this was scarcely odd, because... they'd eaten every one.
