Has anyone actually tried measuring very low capacitance and inductance on these yet? I’m interested to see if you can zero off a fixture and then measure 200nH - 3uH effectively.
Also, I EFFING LOVE SMD.
How much ?
Really how much ? ?

If you're to properly embrace it you need SMD Smart Tweezers.............yes they can measure to 1nH too !
pF's, no problem.  :)

The set I bought 10+ years ago ceased the need to purchase a poultice of other equipment and I use them on everything. At the time the $ $ hurt but I've long since learnt good tools cost !

Being a pragmatist here but most of my SMD stuff (which I love more than I can explain)  is forward engineering so I don’t need to measure in circuit and can’t be bothered to test before I put it in. I buy decent quality brand name parts so I tend to assume that they are at least binned correctly. Virtually pointless testing in circuit as you’re testing the circuit not the component.

The thing I need the LCR meter for is mainly measuring inductors I’ve made, plus the odd old variable capacitor check (before I palm it off on eBay). I wind prolific amounts of toroids. I think I’ve done about 30 this month already.

I guess also there is no big demands now, especially for the new generation that grew up starting with crappy game controller's buttons up to current touch screen which basically their finger sensitivity can not be compared to older generations that used to type on mechanical type writer which have such a wide dynamic range of sensitivities.

Anyone remember how it feel like by soft touch at the left shift button to disengage the capslock latch and can feel the faint soft click ? While at the same time the whole 10 fingers capable of sensing and pushing hard enough to get the consistent darkness when the ink was drying up at the ribbon. Youngster these days will never get this, its like they have 10 dumb n numb rods at their palm.  :-DD

Put that fist away, grandpa. ;D Mechanical keyboards are sold in bigger numbers than they ever have been and youngsters are a big part of that. We should rejoice that we have both $10 and quality keyboards.

Getting grumpier ... stubbornly and keep denying ... and mumbling ... ".. nothing beat buckling springs ... buckling springs .. ya hear me !!!"  :-DD

Then try touch typing on an ASR33 :)

The keys' heavy long throw and 1/10s delay before ribbon hits the paper is very evocative.

So finally that day has come, the day where this thread is numbered in that special number. Six hundred, sixty and six, now that it has come upon us let us hope, probably in vain, that the chains shall hold.  >:D (joking)

Back to reality i moved my server rack in preparation for moving my table from workshop to house, five hours work and a few more looming with clean up from it. Though to be fair it looks much better where it is now than where it was, only problem is its emptiness is now much more apparent. I got a spot on the bottom reserved for the rack mount 608C and then its empty from U28 on up, or U22 on up if you only count things which currently work.

As you opened it up .. just fyi regarding LCR using Cyrustek ES51919 and ES51920 chip set on checking the vref or calibration adjustment if needed.

Quote ...

For those who would like to perform unit calibration, here is the information and it is also works on Mastech MS5308, UNI-UT612 or whatever using Cyrustek ES51919 and ES51920 chip set.

For DE-5000, adjust DC 500mV between TP1 and TP2.

For others, adjust DC 500mV between pin 26 and pin 28 on ES52920.

Source -> Voltage reference adjustment
arrg. You bastard. You just HAD to post that link.  |O Here I was just sipping my coffee, blissfully ignorant...

Now I have a whole morning's reading to do before I continue with my testing; and it looks like I need to buy some caps that I can find datasheets for to do testing. And now I HAVE to find my battery for my AD584LH board and check my 189 BEFORE I do that vref adj.

Welcome to my shitlist, beeyotch. ;)

Nice try.... that one doesn't even get you on my RADAR now, thanks to BravoV...  :-DD

What's worst is not the adjustment link... but the links in that thread to the older threads that I was completely unaware of.   :palm:

Follow up on the Tek 465B. About 20 or so tantalums changed out. The intermittent ripple on trace is gone. Clean and sharp. DM44 right on the mark too. Completed for now until the next crap out.  :-DD

Was planning on starting the re-cap of the RCA scope but I had to shuffle it back. This Fluke 8600A suddenly went stupid on the 20V range. That +9.980V should be +10.000V. It does eventually get to 10V after about a half hour warm up. Never did that before. The power supply has never been re-capped so decided to do it even though the voltages were OK.

The power supply before re-cap. Note those 3 orange/white tantalums lower left clustered together on the main board.

Changed out the PSU filter caps and no change was noted. I really didn't expect to affect anything anyway. Those 3 tantalums....in a critical op amp circuit. If one or more is leaky it could very well cause the slow ramp in measured voltage. Decided to change them. They were 10uf. All I had was 15uf. Not an issue. Guess what? The tant on the far left leaked electrolyte when I laid it on the bench! You can see a slight staining around it. Bingo.....more tantalum terrorism dealt with!

Here's the PSU re-capped and three 15uf tants installed. And the 8600A is rock steady. The Fluke 8050A has also never been re-capped but is working fine. Going to do it too.

My fingers are all itchy. A guy posted one Tek464 DM44 and one Tek465, both power up but untested for CAD 125 each. From the pictures they are impecable. I know they go for about $1 per MHz? Or that is fully tested and calibrated? What should I offer him so I can make a buck after possibly cleaning the contacts, calibrating, testing? I don't think I can control my urge... ;D

I'd stay away from the 464. Only worth 1 USD/CAD/GBP per MHz if they are fully working.

@med6753 - nice job all around  :-+. Good to see things going in the right direction :)

$100 USD is not a bad price. Check out US Ebay...they go for a lot more.

If your intention is to fix and sell you can probably make a profit. If they are keepers personally I would pass on the 464. I don't like the muddy traces on those old storage scopes.

They are not for personal use, I have five scopes already. Is just the curse...
I want to play with them, clean/adjust if needed and resell.

I don't buy them for resale unless I'm going to snag at least 3x what I paid for them. Preferably 5x (done that a couple of times  :-DD ). Sometimes you get a PITA or a lemon. I've got one on my hands now.
