It's about 1855 in the evening and the snow has started. And so have the auto accidents. The cops are gonna be busy all night.

The forecast has backed off a bit. Now 5-10 inches of snow rather than earlier 6-12 inches. But what hasn't changed is the prediction that for a period it will change to freezing rain and cause ice build up. That's the part that is concerning. All snow, no big deal. Ice build up, big deal. We'll see what happens overnight.  :phew:

No one at home or work will understand or appreciate this, but …

I picked up a Tektronix 492 spectrum analyzer w/options 1,2 and 3 from a nearby used test equipment reseller.  It needs work, but I used spectrum analyzers as a young engineer, I wanted it, and I got a good deal ($325).

A Tektronix 2336 oscilloscope on the site also caught my eye, in good cosmetic condition, at a low price and looked cool.  They had multiple available, so I thought, "what the heck, buy two and I can scavenge from one if need be."

I bought five.

Good deal. I wish I had a local TE reseller like that! Or maybe not  :)

Have fun with the 492. Service manual and schematics are readily available and you can find spare parts on eBay. You might have to bodge together a raiser board though. Some trimmers are not accessible when the boards are in the instrument.

This is impressive and I'll have a go at it, once I get the rest of this gear gone. Thanks mate, I bookmarked it. Already thinking about ways to get the readout into LCD form on the 4.2" Nextion touchscreen.

Here's a little complaint about Windows 10.  I'll make it TEA related at the end.  :)

Yesterday one of my Windows 10 PCs did a major update.  I think it finally got the fall update that was supposed to come out last October or something but they botched it and pulled it and released it again later.

Win 10 has a feature called "Storage Sense" that is supposed to automatically free up space on your hard drive.  It will automatically delete old temp files, and automatically remove items in your recycle bin that are more than a month old.  These two features are fine by me.  Windows should always have been cleaning up it's old temp files and if something's been in my recycle bin for a month I am pretty sure I don't need to get it back.  There are a couple other features I don't remember the details on right now.

But it seems they have added a feature that could be dangerous.  It can now be set to delete any files in your download folder after 30 days.  On my system this was not turned on but I read online that some people have found it turned on.  I heard they also added clearing the download folder as an option in the older Disk Cleanup utility.

So if you are someone like me that keeps downloaded stuff permanently in your downloads folder you need to make sure this option is turned off in Storage Sense.  We wouldn't want Windows deleting all those test equipment manuals you have downloaded as PDFs and left in your download folder.   :)

I was not aware of that feature in Win10. Good to know. But if you practice good file management it shouldn't be an issue. I DON'T keep stuff in the download folder. I file it appropriately or delete it if isn't needed. And since you specifically mention downloaded manuals I have a folder called "Manuals" and even 3 sub folders for the type of manual as shown in the attachment. It ain't hard to do and the right manual is easy to find.

Actually, the "Downloads" folder IS where you're supposed to keep all that crap. It was my generation who started making it a default thing in our builds with the first browsers, and the intent was to keep all those stupid zips and rars with confusing as fuck names from cluttering up your normal folders. As such, the Downloads folder became the first default "Archive" folder in Windows; circa the Win '95/'98 transition.

Only 3 ?  :o
I have 53, each one for a different brand of equipment, be it TE or something else I own or have worked on.
Some have further sub folders with Tek being the biggest.
