He's wrong. It did not explode. You see any glass shrapnel on the ground? Nope. It imploded and the built in mesh prevented it from exploding. Now if that had been a CRT from the 1950's there would have been glass everywhere.

Fucking hell. I've never seen one without the mesh explode in person, and I never want to. You'll never get all the glass particles.

My mother was into recycling such that she'd have twenty or so old non working box tvs in a row. My job was to take a sledgehammer and go TV to TV breaking the CRT for safety.
And you still have the scars to prove it as well no doubt?

I'm a bit flabbergasted about your computer. Is that really for some kid or why did you not use industrial components?
:-// Huh?

It's just that ... never mind.

Dude... this shit has to live in the living room... on my computer desk... a few feet away from the TV. None of those would even fit on the shelf.

And in all honesty... I was sucked in by the bling.

I had given up and was going to order a hum-drum Rosewill case just to get the room I needed, and Amazon tempted me with the TT V200.

What can I say?  :-// I'm still a nerd in my heard of hearts. The RGB got to me. ;)

Test gear RIP today. A friend has a Tek 7603 with a bad tube in it which has outgassed through a crack in the anode cap...

Technically in the case of a CRT it would have ingassed.  :blah:

Dumbass poured petrol or some similar accelerant inside the already broken tube, and used the heater filament as an igniter. Vacuum not included.

Not the same thing as a percussive explosion, which is what can happen with a CRT when it gets hit:

The neck crumbles being the weakest part, and vacuum pulls the gun assembly and the big slug of glass behind it inside at the screen like a bullet. Newer CRTs were made with extra thick glass at center of the screen where the glass used to taper thinner there, and the shadow mask/aperture grill were reinforced to act as a safety net to decelerate the gun so it isn't at terminal velocity when it hits the screen.

No, it did not. it was not an intact tube. If it was, there would have been a flash as the heater opened, nothing more. If it were merely de-nippled and full of air, nothing but a little puff of smoke from the center of the connector would happen. There had to have been some form of accelerant... WD-40 shot down through the nipple, I'd wager, now that I have a chance to think of it... for it to do that.

How do I know? I nuked literally hundreds of CRTs in the dump with everything from RC battery packs on the heater to BB guns to firecrackers on the end of the neck (VERY satisfying) and gasoline poured on and lit from a distance. I deliberately tried burning the heater on several after de-nippling, hoping some of the magic fairy dust would catch fire if I added oxygen. NOTHING.

You know, I missed the part where the CRT had already been deactivated and had air in it. That makes that video totally fucking lame. If you're gonna do something...do it right.  :-DD No wonder it was just basically smoke.

What happens when a vampire bites a zombie?  :-//

Well speaking from the context of the book i'm working on it'd depend on type, if it's one of the originals nothing if it was one of the bitten then it'd cure them.

Back on to TEA or more correctly TEA fixing space. Today I gained over 100mm of Bench using a reduction in COFFEE by dropping a more blingy modern grinder without a Doser and flicky lever I had i mothballs on the bench. The 'Pile' is also reducing after weeks of overflowing :phew:

Need to put a mat on the bench of some sort too wonder how ESD ones do with Coffee grounds and milk slops - Suggestions?

...If you ever get the chance to see a TV CRT manufactured from the mid 1960's onward you will see a mesh screen built into the aquadag coating on the bell of the CRT....

Do you have an example to illustrate this, I won't contradict too hard as you ate probably older than I am and I hate being wrong.
I was convinced that early monochrome CRT's had no integral implosion protection.
I did once smash a green monochrome CRT out of some Unisys terminal that had a plastic sheet actually built into the front glass.
CRT's from mid 60's onward (monochrome and colour) AFAIK had integral implosion protection in the form of a steel tension band (only?)
I've never noticed a "mesh" in a CRT other than the shadow mask in colour tubes and I've done some serious ingassing at the beginning of the millennium. (So much there were meteorological phenomena in France one year :o)
