One thing is clear... I will spend far less time and shed many less tears if I just rebuild the battery pack. And yeah... storing it outside the case is the thing to do once that's done.
I couldn't take the not seeing if it works anymore (you may suspect, rightly, that patience is not my most visible quality) so I rigged up a 12VDC cable and managed to get it into the battery compartment, fat hands notwithstanding.
And... of course there's a power supply issue. I brought the power up to 12VDC and got a beam on the screen (good news) and as I released the current limit, the current spikes and goes to zero (bad news). I imagine its the same old bastard tant problem, so it is now in line for a recap.
BUT, I hate to spend a lot of time doing that, only to find that the tunnel diode needs to be replaced. Or maybe it doesn't matter and maybe the tunnel diode is good and in that case, this is a lot of TE for twenty-two bucks. It even came with the original coax test cable.
