One thing is clear... I will spend far less time and shed many less tears if I just rebuild the battery pack. And yeah... storing it outside the case is the thing to do once that's done.

I couldn't take the not seeing if it works anymore (you may suspect, rightly, that patience is not my most visible quality) so I rigged up a 12VDC cable and managed to get it into the battery compartment, fat hands notwithstanding.

And... of course there's a power supply issue.  I brought the power up to 12VDC and got a beam on the screen (good news) and as I released the current limit, the current spikes and goes to zero (bad news).  I imagine its the same old bastard tant problem, so it is now in line for a recap.

BUT, I hate to spend a lot of time doing that, only to find that the tunnel diode needs to be replaced. Or maybe it doesn't matter and maybe the tunnel diode is good and in that case, this is a lot of TE for twenty-two bucks. It even came with the original coax test cable.

Indeed. Just sold my FT818 and listed a whole load of other stuff so I'm looking at more expensive ones now  :-DD

And you are agreeing with which of the MANY points in the post(s) above this one?  :-//

I can understand why you are selling the FT818. But why did you buy one in the first place?    >:D   :-DD

this is a lot of TE for twenty-two bucks. It even came with the original coax test cable.

Look at the price of that standard cable on fleabay - you have already made a profit!

They are rare and very special. Search for the part number and you will see someone has done a high quality non-destructive teardown of one.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Quick troubleshooting tip... Turn the current limit up to something below the point at which it shuts down, then look for the cap that gets hot. Replace, lather, rinse, repeat. We used to do the same thing back in the day using varying wattage in a dim-bulb tester with RCA TVs that had the "chopper" SMPS design.

The WO-505A is done. Vertical calibrated and compensation checked. Here it is displaying a 1MHz square from the Heath IG-4244 Scope Calibrator. Not too shabby for a scope with only a 5MHz bandwidth.

As you can see I labeled a reminder about keeping the intensity control no more than 3/4. RCA doesn't get a free pass on this. It's clearly a design fault. The control is 75K. It probably should have been no more than 50K to prevent going into what I would call an "overdrive" condition on the CRT.

And....the CRT for the Heath scope is at my local PO. So tomorrow morning I'll have it.  :-+

Ordered some high resistance Russian glass resistors just to play with the HP 4329a.  This thing makes it too easy.

So 1x 10 power of 12 = 1,000,000,000,000 or 1TOhm, cool!

Ha yea that's really cool. How much were those resistors?

As long as baby GLaDOS also gets a run-in with Wheatley and a potato battery, I'll be entertained.  :-+

I saw the preview the other day. Looked interesting but my record with most Netflix movies is that they tend to suck. Is this one any good?  :-//

I think their real strength is their shows. `Altered Carbon' is probably my favorite new sci-fi/dystopian series. Waiting to see what they do in the promised next season.

I've been surprised a number of times by their productions. I don't think they're gonna suffer a bit from Disney pulling all their catalog to show exclusively on their own streaming service; might even free a bunch of money for more new production once they get out from under the Mickey-bloat.

Was a 2019 Sundance premiere. Watched it with my son; I'd watch it again. Like I said; I give it 4 claws up. Pretty good, but not epic.  :-+

Cheers bd139, might be that!

Unfortunately it seems to be dead, discharges seconds after turning off supply voltage.  :-\
