Now you are headed down the Dark side proper. You were looking for Enclosures last night so checkout the Sheetmetal functionality of Fusion 360 

I attach a plaything I designed then Laser cut (you NEED one of them too ) but if you want a custom look then it is worth giving it a go. Send your DXF off to a local sheetmetal company with a Laser or Plasma table and get what you really need not what you can get.

A word of caution here. It's easy for the naïve user to draw up something that's difficult or impossible to fabricate. You need a basic grasp of the various processes used to have an idea of what's possible and what isn't. For instance, a naīve design might put a J or U fold into a piece of sheet metal that's so narrow that it's impossible to make without specialised tooling, whereas a nice wide J or U can be turned out on any box and pan folder.

I'm not saying "don't do it", just make sure that you've got enough basic understanding of how some poor sod will have to try and turn your drawing into something fabricated so that (1) he doesn't curse you and all your decendents, (2) it can be manufactured in the most economic fashion.

This is where the demise of the local 'backstreet' engineering workshops is a tragedy, you could go and have a chat with the bloke who did the work and he'd set you right if you were asking the impossible, or had chosen a design that was expensive to make where a few changes would get you something much cheaper to make. It's a particular tragedy for me, as there are a couple of places within 3-4 minutes walk of me that look exactly like they used to be 'backstreet' machine shops and are no more.

I agree not a job without some sheetmetal experience but at least with a CAD model you can get your idea across to someone clearly without toilet paper sketches with absolutely no allowances for manufacturing tolerances.

In the sheetmetal functionality you can set minimum bend radius's (also allows for the extra material in the bend) for the chosen material allowance for welding etc. The one commercial job I have had my local bloke do had a minor bend related issue but it was picked up even before cutting. Quick change my end and then back to them by email. Picked up the finished bracket two days later.

Fusion 360 can't be too bad, even I have made a few things with it. But like any computer program - it's main aim is to waste your time!

You mean like sketching up a Garage Roof you haven't properly measured yet  This two G&T time waster got me to a materials budget of $1200 for the wood and roofing materials. Now I can go in with the measuring stick and measure the 50+ year old frames for actual truss building.

Planning on doing the Truss building myself to keep the costs down.

Drinking G&T is not a waste of time ever and double using the time must mean a saving therefore I must drink more

I thought Fusion 360 was supposed to be free? The links I have for it say its free 1st year to students, after year 1 the fee £263 per year

Re the 34461A I rate the 34401A I have as more stable.

Similarly, the 34401A I have is more stable than the 34410A.

I  wonder if you guys are as anal with your cars as you are with your DMMs, I mean, your cars have a 0 - 60mph time, do you always check on it looking for those horses that might have escaped over the years 

No dyno visits for me. And the speedo...one car is 2 mph high, the other's 3 mph high, relative to a couple of GPS I checked them against.

  The point I was making, is your car matching its claimed 0-60mph time, does anyone check it or are you all happy to accept the fact that its in the general zone 

The 0-60 time for a car depends on many factors not least the skill of the driver.

Achieving the manufacturer's claimed time in normal driving conditions would be a bit like trying to measure uV level signals with a 3458 while in a busy commercial kitchen with Gordon Ramsey screaming at you to "get that f**king thing out of my way you c**t!".

Why making it cloud based? Why cutting the hair marines style on a pretty girl?

1.) your PC must not be so extremly fast when the cloud make the calculation.

2.) they need your construction data , the same then a facebook,

3.) earn $$ , you have a pocket with "cloud points" and have to buy them additional.

I see very little difference between Fusion, Microsnot, Farcebook, Google et al. They all phone home in some form or another and use/sell our data. That said very unlikely Google and Farcebook will ever charge out of the blue for anything.

Microsoft on the other hand has been trying to shove subscription/year for some time and yet 'most' of the world still uses and trusts them.

Autodesk based on past form I am still wary of but that said I can download and store all of my files locally if I want and I OWN the data and files unlike some of the other so called 'free' Cad cloud offerings and they are private to the general public unless I allow otherwise.

If by some miricle I hit the $100k USD limit and a chunk of my Engineering type Business is coming from Fusion work then there are far more expensive licenses out there per year for other software before I would bitch about Fusion's pricing.

I'm used to seeing 12yo people under instruction go from 0-60mph in 5s, and 0-2000ft in 45s.

When they reach 14yo, they can do it solo without an instructor.

I have no problems paying someone to provide value. I use Office 365, AWS, digitalocean, fastmail, all day.

The problem I have is taking value for free where there is a risk of something becoming not free.

In this case, someone paid for a 3y license for me via expenses increases

Edit: We also have to consider that at the end of the day very little of what we produce has any significance or value past our own little bubble so when we're all gone, it doesn't matter. We're insignificant as is our data.
