Me and Grizewald did have a little bid war this last weekend. And I won. Not without some regrets; I'd told myself to stop well below where the auction ended but I think it was worth it.

From RFT Volkseigene Betrieb Gerätewerk Karl-Marx-Stadt (which used to be Siemens & Halske Werk Chemnitz), the 1KΩ Meßwiderstand. In NOS condition, with approval note and user manual, in original 1950s paper box. Unused, as far as I can tell.

I also received 1 Ω and 10 Ω variants of same origin. However, they have seen a 200lb gorilla sometime on their way to me (perhaps even before being sold, the packaging was unharmed and well made), and are rattling; the resistance wire carrier is broken off. They measure reasonably right, but are not in tolerance as far as my very quick 2-wire measurement could tell, though. I'll look them over and get back to them. (it might very well be so that the 974A does considerably better on 3 digits and up Ohms, of course, especially in 2-wire. Shorting the leads gives 0,08 Ω wire resistance, so that must be factored in, and will of course be more and more significant as measured resistance decreases. )

From another manufacturer, in the same shipment, I also received this;

This time, we're in Austria, and the brand is Norma, Fabrik Elektrische Messgeräte, and we've come into the swinging 60s. Again, with test protocol, original packaging, and flawless NOS condition. As far as my 974A can tell, it's within specification.  1964-09-16 it was measured to 99,995 absolute Ω, which comes out to 100.04399755 International Ω, and I measure it to 100.08 Ω including measurement leads which are measured to 0,08Ω when shorted per above. /hp/ sez BAM.

With the exception of a small NOS mains transformer tapped for 120, 220 and 300(!) Volts primary and some valve heater voltages secondary, the lot is concluded with this:

Also here, NOS 60s stuff, made in USSR this time, by V/O MACHPRIBORINTORG USSR MOSCOW (which I suspect is the import-export front end, not the factory as such), a 0,001 Henry mutual inductance coil. I've not made a measurement setup for it, but DC resistance I did check, and it is spot on, when accounting for measurement lead errors.

Its path to me is interesting. Apparently it was exported to the UK, and sold from "Electronic Hobbies" at 91 Pancras Road, London NW1 in 1970; their receipt was also included. (Is that £2 10 shillings? I'm quite bad at old UK money...) The store existed in 1977, I found an ad from them in the November edition of Wireless World (p135).

All in all, a reasonable catch, I think. Had it gone for the starting bid of SEK 130 (and neither me nor Grizewald would have let that happen), it would have been an orgy of jammy gits; but now it's more of what you'd expect from those Ukrainian sellers that sell old standards in sets. Plus that Soviet inductor (and a small transformer). And shipping was half of the cheapest I can find on Ebay.

Yeah, I'm happy.

Even while I am sorting stuff into sell, giveaway, and keep piles, with the goal of the keep pile being the smallest, I still cruise ebay like nick cage did convenience stores...

[Bid-war with Grizewald about some very nice resistors on ebay]

Yeah, I'm happy.

Congrats for your winnings (poor Grizewald).
This reminds me about another project which I'm procrastinatig since a long time.  ::)  :palm:

It is a 10kOhm 0.005% resistor from VPG.
Details can be found here: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/metrology/my-first-10kohm-reference-resistor/

Since then I've added an Arduino nano (@bd139: yes, I know.  ;) ), a SHT21 sensor for measuring temperature and humidity, and a SD-card reader. The idea is: whenever the resistor is getting calibrated, you can measure the temperature nearby the resistor and the humidity level in the case. Together with the calibration data it can be stored on the SD-card so that  you'll have the full history of this thing anytime you want it.¹ To connect the Arduino nano, you have to put it into another box which will do then the connection. Some magnets will grab the box and will hold it tight. When you are doing some measuring, you can pull it out of the box, so no interferences from a running Arduino. There is also some silica gel below the pcb to keep humidity low. And yes, I did a mistake: the distance between the binding posts is bigger than the usual 19.05mm. I'll fix that in my next try.  :-/O  :D

¹Well, that's the idea. What it is actually missing is the programm for the nano.  ::) I'm not a very good programmer and therefore I'm avoiding (procrastinate) it. But I think, I'll do it the next days. Eventually...   |O

Here are some actual pictures from it:

Box in the box:

Box outside the box:

Top view. Below the pcb there is some silica gel. In the middle, there is the SHT21 sensor, carefully placed next to the resistor.

And this is the resistor itself:

Nixie madness! The just arrived 5326B frequency counter (alas, without the 7th digit option) temporarily stacked on top of the 5328A frequency counter for a quick power up test.

/rant

I moved to a new apartment in Munich center. Did a lot of work in it. Last step get a decent internet connection.
FTTC is here fine yuhuuu, I ordered on the 21st March with 1&1.
Not activated yet. Canceled 1&1, they told me no lines are available, monkeys.
Nuts mode activated (COVID and no Internet at home is not fun), I requestd DSL with 3 others company (Vodafone, Telekom and MNet) and will see...
Telekom told me they habe a problem with the 250MB I ordered, but they can offer me a 16MB line  :-DD
No feedback yet from Vodafone or MNet.

Did I move in the only building in Munich where there is no Internet bandwidth available?

PLAN B: get a 5G Hotspot.  :palm:

Why this is happening in 2020 in a big and rich european city?

So sad.

Thanks for reading and sorry....

Because ISDN. We used to joke that while the French didn't get the Internet because they were busy buying porn on Minitel, the Germans didn't get high-speed Internet because DTAG had decided that ISDN was the future in 1996 and since the telco equipment has a life cycle of 30 years, there was no need to change anything.

Actually, I had an ISDN line to home (paid by employer) for mebbe a year in 1999, when I was full time consulting at Ericsson and also had some commitments at work that meant I had to have good connectivity to work from home as well.  It was cool that connection time was practically immediate, and that connections could be established by dialing-out from work too, but the rest sucked compared to pretty much anything except POTS dialup.  A year later I got myself a 384Kbit SDSL connection, which was _excellent_. Especially since 50% of it was paid by my new employer.

Pfft we only got FTTC here about 1.5 years ago. I'm in suburban London in a bit where a large amount of tech staff live. This was all down to NIMBYs not wanting the cabinets on the streets. And it only hits 59/15 mbits each way. They just put fibre boxes on all the poles now so we can get FTTP and I was literally just going to order it before the plague hit. Figured it was a risk getting OpenReach to do anything at the moment so leaving it be.

BTW the local morlocks tried to burn our 4G tower down unsuccessfully last night. It's still working. They already had a team out this morning replacing the cladding on it  :palm: :palm: :palm:. They're building a large cage around it as well which makes it more difficult to attack.

I wonder if I talk to my building administration and find someone with a brain there (statistically speaking building administration folks have the same IQ as rental cars ladies, in some jobs they hire only stupid people), can a building admin request a fast fiber connection?

Thanks for all the comment so far, I am sorry to read about your loss BD.

@zucca That's expensive for 5G. We can get 4G service. 80Gb transfer no up front for £20/month (€22). 45 down 10 up. Fine for backup :)

Edit: question for all. I need to set up a separate VLAN for my test gear including potentially a 34401A at some point (serial only). Is buying an old Cisco 2600 router with a 16 port EtherSwitch and serial port WIC classified as overkill for this?  :-DD. You can pick them up for £12 (!) now inc delivery. Just add console and serial cables + etherswitch module and sorted.

With virgin there is no cabinet in the street, all their gear is in manholes so you get FTTP without any of the drawbacks, maybe you should educate them and then you can get speeds like mine.

BTW I reckon your 4G attack was possibly motivated by the that Anthony Steele twat who has this on his site today  :palm:

I really want it available over TCP so can use client library I already wrote and I can use the Cisco as a terminal server for it. Plus then I need a rack cabinet to put it in which can also contain some boat anchors  (I'm slowly consuming the living room)

About appropriate, I'd say. The only expensive part is the 8x or 16x RS232 card, should you need it, with 68-pin SCSI connectors. Because terminal servers are still a thing. I've got a 2600 here, with a blanking plate in the big module place and some serial connector WIC. Probably should try to get a serial module for it.

There's a couple of ones with the RS232 cards in by the looks. Doing some research now. Looking at under £50 for a terminal server. Remember paying 5x that for the sodding switch module back in the day
