Great. DPD Local have fucked up here delivering my 6205b. Apparently no one in! There has been someone in all day every day for the last 4 months. The door bell works.

So now I have to get it redirected to a local shop, which isn't happening until after 17:00 tomorrow and the shop is closed on Sunday so not getting it until Monday. And I have to drive there as it's a fucking mile away and I'm not carrying an HP power supply in the pissing rain a mile on foot.

Wankers!
How did you discover this, did he leave a card or were you tracking the delivery? Either way it sucks. You really seem to get a lot trouble with your deliveries, are you in a spot of the road that makes it difficult for them to park near you and they can't be bothered to walk back to you or something?

I still haven't cased my references yet, haven't found the right case. Maybe I should bite the bullet and buy one.   :-//

for me this one works great and better then expected. : https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/32722959699.html
at least it agreed with most of my meters  :-DD

I have 2 of the cheap 584L boards from ebay. My intent is to house them both in the same box, to try and keep temperatures equal, and reasonably stable by having the whole thing (constantly) mains powered with a battery backup.

Half rack width, 2U is probably the right size. Maybe I can find a valve amp to gut to use the casing...   :-DD

Some advice or restraint needed guys.
A friend of mine offered me a DSO81304B 13ghz oscilloscope, (2) 13ghz active probes and 4 passive probes for $5500. I've been eyeing a debugging setup for USB3.0 and displayplayport 1.3/1.4 for some time now but they are super expensive. The DSO80000 series looks pretty sweet, but I know it's on the older side. I believe the 13ghz is software emulated/extrapolated on the 80000 series and the hardware is natively 12ghz.
You think this oldie is a goodie? I'm waiting back from the guy to see if he has any cal records.
I could rent something newer, but I love having my own gear on hand.
So tempting. The probes alone are super pricey.
I may need some holding back guys.....

If you're looking for words of restraint here you've come to the wrong place.  ;D But I can tell you that for me anything over $300 USD to me is mucho bucks. So $5500 USD is a definite "NOPE".  :-DD But then again I'm not into troubleshooting high speed logic so even if that is a bargain I can't justify it.  :-//

OK, I wasting space here. Sorry.  |O Hopefully someone in the know will chime in.

If your local equipment rental charges are anything like those in the UK then you'll pay that $5,500 out in rent in no time at all. Sure an older unit may be less capable (no particular expertise here, so I'm not going to comment on that) but if it has enough capability for your immediate needs then buying it will get the job done and you'll have it on hand for the future. It only takes "I need a week or two more" rental at the likely rates for that kind of kit and you go from "renting is cheaper" to "renting costs more".

Like med said above, I think you probably came to the wrong place if you don't want to buy something.  :)

Are you sure you're really trying to talk yourself out of buying?   ;D

If you need it and don't have the budget for something new and shiny, that is an absolute steal!!! I'd go for it if you have the funds. Just an example of that scope by itself (to say nothing of probes) is listed for more than twice that on fleabay I see...

Today's "disappointment guaranteed" fleabay sale: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tektronix-Oscilloscope-High-Voltage-Probe-P6015/114353264295

Listed as "used" and " 100% Working", but can you spot two or more reasons that ain't so? :)

Likely has zero freon left, like the two I have. Only mine are in much better shape and can still be used at the stated deratings for no dialectric fluid.

Mine contains visible fluid, which I presume is freon.

Mine also has an earth strap, now that I've taken one off my P6013. Fortunately earth straps are trivial to make, if you have a little phosphor bronze sheet available.

Hopefully! If you have visible fluid, you're good to go as the vapor pressure of freon provides the right concentration in a sealed environment. I'm still look around for the slim possibility I might find some to fill mine with. BTW for those playing along at home, DO NOT get any bright ideas and try to fill a P6015 with a modern refrigerant. The probe case is designed for the vapor pressure of freon, which is much lower than most of the common refrigerants nowadays.

R12 is still available. Just get your Section 609 or equivalent. >:D

Alternately, anyone can buy a distillation-process refrigerant recovery machine. I bought mine from a pawn shop for $75. Then go look for some old R12 refrigerators in the dump or junkyard; don't touch any that aren't still sealed. Odds of finding an R12 automotive AC system that isn't contaminated with R134A are pretty slim, don't look there. Too many ghetto-mechanic morons buy the "conversion kit", fill or top off with R134A, then take the couplers off again. :palm: They don't care as long at the fukkin' thing makes cold TODAY so they can go kroozin'... You just can't expect a car to actually have nothing but R12 in it.

Now that I think of it... you'll probably need to show a Section 609 to be allowed to recover refrigerant at a dump too; not like the old days where they didn't care if you were certified as long as you had the machine and knew how to use it.
