Thats a bit better, strange though that the Unimat 3 was introduced to replace the Unimat SL and the toy one that sent you was called Unimat 1, what happened to Unimat 2?

How would that help you do panel work?

I'd better join you then, I've just managed to drill my binding posts 2mm out of alignment with each other, but at the end of the day, who cares, I don't it does a job of work for me and thats it.

I like to think that I do pretty decent panel work with exceedingly simple tools, a hand drill, hacksaw blade (just the blade), a reamer and file. Sometimes a hole saw if neatness or speed is required.

Of course just for projects.

Clearly I don't have your patience, I just want to get to the stage where I'm either using it or testing it and if I can take a short cut I will

We were taught at high school to use metal scribers when doing final mark outs as the line they leave better helps a pin punch to keep on position. Then the mark should be improved with a centre punch the better keep the drill bit from wandering. Punches need be kept needle sharp for precise marking.

It's as much a matter of patience as it is preference of allocating funds to TEA. Perhaps a bit of apathy towards the looks, i take a stance of it don't have to look pretty to work good.

Exactly, its only for my use so it don't have to look particularly pretty, its more about functionality to me. I can do nice panel work if I have to, I used to produce motor control panels at time that were used as part of an automated assembly line making small arms for the British Army, so it had to be nice because it was on show.

You could easily convert this unit for board inspection.

If you can afford the workspace buy a larger lather - 3-1/2" CH at least. You would discover the limitations of a Unimat rather quickly I think.

Well, since I didn't find anything of interest on Black Friday, I happened to take a look at eBay (no surprise, right?) and saw a DE-5000 with the alligator clips, tweezer, and guard accessories for $80 including shipping. So, I clicked it. (Again, no surprise, right?)

Now, I'm just hoping it's legit.

Yep, I'll compare its measurements to an Agilent U1732B. :-+ I think there are also teardown photos of the DE-5000 around here.

I am hoping to pick up a South Bend 9" lathe in the next few weeks, if negotiations go well...  Fingers crossed.

Nice lathe - solid, dependable. :)  Still need tooling though unless you can get it thrown in with the purchase price. I spend more time making tools than anything else really, though electronics has moved to the forefront recently. Pictured are a couple of precision knurling tools I designed/made recently for my Myford lathe.

I am hoping to get tooling etc. as a package. That is the 'negotiation' bit.   It was pure luck - a friend of my wife is clearing her father's house and asked me to help her to value "the stuff in the basement".  He was a machinist, and the basement is an Aladdin's cave of tools & gear - including 3 lathes!

I think your knurling attachment is beautiful work - I hope I can do that well.
