Those look really nice. You can clearly tell they're well made units.

Oh, ok, thanks for that info, as it happens there is a 1906 also going at the moment but again it is more then I really wanted to pay. I love using my other Iwatsu scope, its only a 60Mhz one with those 2+2 channels but no cursors and its lovely to look at too. The only issue with it is that bent shaft on the delay timebase and the variable control for the main timebase which is only a problem if using the delay which is not often. To me it has like your 465, the look of completeness about it and functionality, its full of switches and has a nice colour to it.

Yeah I am thinking about that 1906. It might replace the GDM-8341 :D

The Iwatsu's are far better designed internally than the Teks are. None of that "oh fuck I've got to take the entire bastard thing apart to get at a single capacitor".

I have done cal on the TG215 and it's spot on now. Next task: remove RS stickers. I HATE RS stickers! :D

Why are you thinking of replacing the GDM-8341 with a TTi unit? Is there a benefit or is it more a matter of wanting it?

GDM-8341 is up for cal soon and it’s difficult to cal yourself. You have to buy a code from GW and make a cable up. This means I need to pay someone to do it as I don’t have a full set of voltage standards.  Need to move away from that sort of dependency on third party cal service etc. Means I can’t do a piecemeal cal with a transfer standard.

That's the problem with most modern meters these days, I like to do my own calibrations and with internal trimmers you can do it.

BARGAIN ALERT!!!!

Go to eBay, enter "Aglient" into the search window, and then sort the results for Price+Shipping Highest First.  There's a seller in Taiwan with several bargain pieces of gear for just $999,999.00 which means you'll get $1 change for your $1 million tender.

Quick guys, before they all go...

[EDIT] I forgot to add... FREE SHIPPING!!!

I seriously wonder if this is an attempt at a scam, they hope someone will click buy-it-now and then they can harass them for payment.  There's a real one on the eBay Keysight store for around $25,000

Made some progress with my DPS5015 bench PSU, casing might be a little 'over-engineered' but should last a while.. :)
Also testing adding in-line photos.

Started off like this:

Slit the 5" square tube on the miller:

Milled a step on the edges so the two halves slot together:

Added the dividers and vent, fan will go in the top cover:

Jeebus... with that much metal mass, you could easily build it fanless. Just don't drop it on your foot; you'll need surgery to put it back on.  :-DD

What does concern me is the quality of driving... I'm much more likely to be killed by a drunk or otherwise impaired driver.  And I'm sure the road death statistics aren't pretty in the UK either.

I wouldn't be concerned about coming over here for a few days for a conference or whatever.

FYI: Annualised road fatality death rates per 100,000 population - UK 2.9 (world ranking 4th), USA 10.6 (world ranking 60th). And by comparison the best and two worst: Micronesia 1.9, Thailand 36.2, Libya 73.4. (I included the bottom two because Libya's figures are such an outlier.)

Firearms mortality rates (all causes deliberate and accidental, again per 100,000 population) - UK 0.23, USA 10.54 (no figures for those other three countries).

So, you're right, you should be marginally more scared of cars than guns. In both countries you're more likely to commit suicide than be killed by a gun or on the roads (7.4/100,000 and 12.6/100,000 respectively) which is a considerably more worrying statistic.

Love the level of detail you have put into parts that won't even be seen without removing the lid, to buy an enclosure, with this much metal and workmanship would cost considerably more than the sum of its total parts, overkill really but I can't wait to see the finished item.

Make sure you can crack it open easily (preferably with added smoke and flashing light display)  to show people and problem solved  ;D

Road fatalities here in the U.K. are pretty low. However it’s like a fucking pin ball machine on the roads. My car is covered in dents, one of which is a completely pummelled rear door. Everyone thinks it’s my driving but I haven’t hit a thing! All happened while parked! And some stupid how actually told me that bumpers were for bumping when she hit my car  :palm:

Some TEA goodness for you all.

Along with an interesting sub-story to the 8300A, the fuse holder cap arrived broken and i was marginally annoyed because of it, thinking i might have to replace the body as well. Imagine my surprise when after 3 hours of looking i discovered they still make the exact same fuse and sell it, curiously, only through mouser or in bulk. A 3 dollar part, a spare 3 dollar part, a contingency plan and shipping later it was 17 dollar order. I now have two meters with complete fuse-holders as well as 2 spare fuse-holders.

This got turned into a QRP Labs QCX transceiver preorder. This is a very clever little device as it's not just a QRP transceiver but a small collection of test equipment for self-alignment. It has a built in DMM, frequency counter, RF signal generator and RF power meter which can be reused on other projects.

Interesting. I look forward to seeing that.

Wow, Chris. That's awesome stuff! Must be so cool being able to make such nice enclosures just the way you want.

I envy that too. 99% of what I throw together never gets graced with an enclosure because I know it's going to be shit :)

You can get a long way with a sheet metal folder and a drill press, but it does take a milling machine to get the little details right. Things like a rebate on the edge of a heat sink to join flush with a panel, or making an accurate front panel cut out and a mating piece of Perspex to fit into it.

With a bit of luck it's not too difficult to get your hands on an old milling machine. For pretty much the same reasons that boat anchor test gear can be had cheaply, old big engineering equipment is reasonably priced: You need somewhere to put it, it's heavy to move and it requires a bit more skill to coax good results out than it does on the latest computer controlled gizmos.

Some of my recent bargains. The innards are from my Griffin low tension variable voltage supply. That big ole' Zenith variac is the voltage control. It had dry caps so I've just replaced all five of the electrolytics (all RS, btw, as it most else apart from the variac and meter faces.

The label only says "Griffin & George, London.".

I found a great (to me) Ebay shop (Universal_Resouce_Trading) who buy up whole labs worth of stuff. Everything from mass specs to electrophoresis setups, face-lifting machines to vintage microscopes. Well worth a look.
