Brown era Keithley kit was as good as, sometime better, than HP kit of the same era. The thing is that Keithley didn't used to have the same level of name recognition which was a good thing for us TEA addicts looking for a good price. Sadly, from our point of view, people are beginning to recognise Keithley for what they are and the prices have been steadily creeping up over the last few years.

Creeping? Seems more like galloping to me!

Still hoping to find a modestly priced Keithley to add to my collection.

That lab in the background looks much too clean!
That, sir, is one of my walls of JENGA; which I am actually in process of dismantling "brick" by "brick". On the other side of that wall is the laundry and a 1982 Yamaha Maxim on a motorcycle lift. Before that sees the light of day, I shall have to mine through ~5 meters of said JENGA, then fight my way past a 2.4 Ecotec engine, the Wubb Club Big Box o' Fun[emoji769], gardening tools and recycle /trash bins.  :palm:

I think I have that much stuck to my forearms...  :-DD

I have a set of cocobolo guitar backs and sides. Cocobolo is very hard and very resinous wood. The wood arrives sawn and needs reducing to final thickness. Normally you'd just take a plane to it and be done. The cocobolo wouldn't play, my plane blunted in about five swipes and after quite a bit of plane fettling I had to take the ignominious route of just sanding it to thickness, about 1/16" off each face of each piece. The resulting sawdust was very fine and very sticky, even with a vacuum line directly on the sander I still ended up covered head to foot and I'm still finding cocobolo dust in the crevices of any tools I had out that day.

The battle was so exhausting that the wood went into the 'ongoing projects' pile and it really is about time that I dug it out and finished that guitar.

That pic was from my "recycled tropical hardwood for recycled patio chairs cut on a recycled table saw" project this spring. I got all the slats cut for two chairs, then the hot & humid weather hit.

I have a couple lengths of the darker wood I need to make foot rungs and armrests out of, and all the slats need to be routed with a 3/8" roundover, but I haven't built the "recycled wood and recycled routers" router table. I'll have another few weeks here soon when I COULD finish them; not sure if I'll have time with the current hoeing-out.

Alternately, I may just clamp a 4x4 to the deck and try routing them on my drill press... it is geared way high for metal, so might be just fast enough.

I believe I hear a bed calling my name...
Haha, I can keep you company there, I have a similar wall of Jenga in my garage to do battle with but not in the warm humid weather. I go out with the intention of being ruthless and skipping most of it. That never happens though because a lot of the stuff was my late mother's and apart from being either new and possibly useful or used useful added to sentimental so not much goes. [emoji53]

Fixing shit updates ...

Heathkit VTVM ... changed mains cable, fitted earth. This is now waiting for a probe kit to arrive from the US.

Tektronix 465. Now this one is sick by the looks. I changed the graticule bulbs out and all is good there. See picture below. BUT the vertical amp is fecked. Channel 1 has no signal at all now. Channel 2 is jumping all over the place the moment you connect a signal. I will dismantle it and see where the hell it is knackered soon. Can't be bothered tonight. Hoepfully it's just an issue with the channel switch and not the attenuators being borked. I'll probably still have to take the channel switch board out though which is going to be a dick of the highest level. I get the feeling this one is going to give me an arse ache.

Tektronix 7603. Fixed X10 mag calibration on that. It was totally out. The rest of the plugins appear to be fine. Had to pull the 7B53A out, change the trimmer, stick it back in, test it, repeat I think 6 times before I got it anywhere as the thing is on the inside edge of the plugin module and I don't any extenders. When the knob comes for this I will strip the panel and clean it inside and out.

Anyway, the only interesting picture. One graticule showing two dead channels...

What probe did you order? if it's this one it's not for the older Heath VTVM's but it can be made to work. The newer Heath VTVM's have a single phone jack for all functions: DC and AC/Ohms. This probe has a switch at the probe tip to switch to DC with the isolating resistor or to direct for AC/Ohms. In order to use that on your VTVM you would have to re-wire the AC/Ohms input jack to the center phone jack. Or just use the probe strictly for DCV.

And I hope your newest 465 doesn't turn into the POS mine was.

Personally I modified mine to use standard 4mm banana meter leads, now I'm modifying it again to use standard high quality safety meter leads.

The DC 1M resistor is now attached directly to the selector switch and the old DC jack is now LED power light and the 2 banana sockets do everything just like a regular meter does. Much neater, simpler and cost effective as you don't need to dedicated leads to with it.

Yep, a lot of folks are performing that mod by installing the 1 MEG resistor inside the case. And that's OK EXCEPT if you work on a lot of vacuum tube circuits and especially on receivers. There's a reason that resistor was in the probe body. It serves to help prevent de-tuning of IF circuits when measuring DC voltages.

Yeah, for an icon, definitely simplified.

We gotta get that added to the emoticons! If you don't ask I will!  :-DD

If you can get approval for it, then I can make a version that's small enough to fit. The shortcut for it could be

I'd actually like to have it as a post icon, which appears to the left of the post's title.

How about you (bitseeker) add it to the original post (with the glossary).  People could then go there, copy the image address and use that to add the image in their post.  An explanation could be given as well.

Running out of room. This is a partial view of the bedroom and it's getting taken over by scopes. I just built up that shelving unit to safely store the 465B and it still needs a coat of stain and poly. If you notice to the left is a walk-in closet. One of two in my bedroom. The one not shown is clothes, shoes, etc ….the stuff you normally expect in a closet. But the one in view for the past 7 years has been stuffed full of power tools, electronic parts, cables, lumber, and automotive stuff such as ramps, jacks, etc. I would love to be able to use it for storing that 7603 scope cart but there just isn't the room. But a solution is at hand.

This past Spring the landlord announced that he was going to retrofit this building on the property as usable garages. It currently has a dirt floor and the original wooden doors were rotten and were taken down. The dirt floor has been dug out in preparation for the concrete slab. Unfortunately that's where it has sat for months. A dirtbag tenant decided in Spring that they were no longer going to pay rent. So the landlord had to start the eviction process. It took months to finally get them out but the worst part is it cost him about $10K USD in lost rent and legal fees. So the garage project got put on hold. But he told me the other day that he hopes to get the slab poured and new doors fitted in about a month. I can't wait. I have dibs on the bay on the left. And most of the stuff currently in that closet put out there. And then I'll have an entire walk-in closet for TEA!

Ouch! I don't know any wife that would allow this! You are very lucky she's not making room by kicking you out. ;) But you made some effort to conceal them or 'harmonize' them with their environment. Good job!

My stuff is in the living room. I can’t work out if she’s tolerant or collecting ammunition.

Incidentally on the VTVM front I don’t want to put the resistor in the case because the whole point is it presents a large impedance at the probe tip, not after 3 feet of low quality inductor and capacitor (test lead). That means you can actually just whack the thing on a point in an RF or valve circuit without it getting annoyed.

Just got my knob for the 7603 and installed it.  All good there now. It’s basically done  :-+ ... however on the space front I’m not sure I can keep it. It doesn’t fit on the drawer units :(

I see, so putting the 1M at the tip helps, such because I would have expected the RF to almost ignore the 1M. So if thats the case surely surely then its easy to make  a DC probe by repurposing a cheap arse scope probe, cutting of the BNC and wiring it onto a 1/4" jack plug, switching the probe into 10:1 mode then you have the then you also have the means of using the grab to grab onto a termination point, removing the grabber and using the probe as conventional meter probe?

Yes. In an ideal resistor the impedance is equal at all frequencies. This isn’t quite true but it’s good enough up to a few MHz

That wouldn’t work because there’s 9M approx in the probe and 10M in the meter and the meter is calibrated for 11M total. Also the scope probe usually has a compensation capacitor across the resistor in the probe which acts as a capacitive divider with the input capacitance of the scope and the probe cable. This is to provide a frequency compensation network to maintain probe bandwidth. As the D.C. probe is literally D.C. only it doesn’t have or need that. In fact the probe plus the stray capacitance acts as a clever low pass filter. Calculated at 1M/100pF around 15Hz.

Just updated the input sockets on my VTVM as the original ones were designed to suit the very short Heathkit plugs and if using leads fitted with standard 4mm banana plugs then it leaves approx 6mm of exposed plug, not an ideal situation. Had a good look at the clearances between the rear enclose and the front bezel and decided that there was just sufficient room to go the whole hog and update to accept modern safety shrouded plugs so thats now perfectly feasible to use the same leads as you would with any decent bench or handheld meter, no compromises there.

I also (previously) had decided to make my meter more AC measurement friendly in terms of its safety as it was originally designed to have the common connected to the chassis and the chassis is not earthed, this meant that if the probes were connected to any AC voltages that were ground referenced there was always the risk of the entire chassis and case being accidentally connected to live and therefore hazardous. I removed all internal connections to the chassis and connected them together to form a wired common within the meter but the DC jack by its very nature was automatically ground connected and needed to be bonded to the common so this had to go. In its place I have fitted an LED indicator wired across the heater supply in the same fashion as the original indicator behind the meter glass was.

The 1M resistor that was in the DC probe tip was transposed to the function switch and is switched in when the DC function is selected so now the whole meter can be used as if it was a modern meter with the same leads being used throughout without the need to swap leads over to measure DC volts and resistance and then change again for AC volts. I have learned today that positioning the 1M resistor inside the meter may affect the tuning of "IF" circuits while measuring DC volts in parts of a radio. Personally I can't say that I have ever noticed this before when I have used a normal multimeter for this purpose but perhaps it is more noticeable on some radios, like ham radios as opposed to normal domestic broadcast radios, I don't know, I not as knowledgeable on these things as others are.

One other modification I have done, this been posted before, so no great detail here, but I have installed a battery eliminator, driven of the heater supply and regulated to 1.6V so now the meter can sit on the shelf for years and no worries about the battery leaking, so that for me is a major advantage. Next to do on this to swap out the 2 core lead for 3 core so the whole meter will be perfectly safe to use so in the event of any problem occuring inside, the cause will safely dump it earth and case the RCD to trip and or the MCB and plug fuse to operate and break the supply.

Not to be a nag but trying to use a drill press as a router seems both a recipe for disaster and a death wish.
Hardly. They had jigs for rabbeting with a drill press in my high-school wood shop; the only difference is the shape of the cut you're making. Probably ought to include the featherboards if I do roll my own, though; so would be a bit more complicated than just clamping a 4x4 down. ;)

It doesn’t fit on the drawer units :(
I have all my stuff in the living room too! LOL
Well apart from the stuff I have jammed under the bed and in a few cupboards and stuff  ;D

It's brutal not having a separate room for all your stuff eh?
I think my wife tolerates the new bench because anytime she or the kids fuck something up, all she has to do now is walk to the back of the living room and plop it down...  :-DD

You make your living room sound massive.

Just a small update on my workbench, rear legs built and all thats left is the side braces top and under-shelf. I'd be done by now if i wasn't fighting my tools, table saw doesn't cut at 0 degree angle, for example.

Does NOT have massive space, more like a broom closet.  |O
