In my defense, it's the first time I've ever seen one come up, I've been searching for one for a long time (over four years now), and it looks pretty pristine.  I was not going to let it get away if I could help it.

That being said, bidding two seconds too early cost me $70 because it gave the other guy time to bump his bid by another $60 in literally the last second of the auction.

neo... (and everybody else... this drives us crazy worse than 10-layer nested quotes) please, please, for the love of all that is good in this world... PLEASE stop quoting/posting big-ass pics as-is. Resize them before you post; all it takes is to add " width=80" (or whatever size is reasonable in pixels) after the "img" in the image tag. Just quote this message to see the exact syntax; it is SO crazy easy.

The image posting seems a bit complicated compared with other forums, I couldn't find a guide to help, but will try and remember the " width=80" bit.  :blah:

David

edit; I've shrunk them down to a smaller size. :-/O

Sorry, small mistake which is now fixed.
There's a reason I made it all-inclusive; you were just the LATEST offender. I know for fact that you wouldn't intentionally offend, and I highly doubt any of our other users would either.  :-+

The image posting seems a bit complicated compared with other forums, I couldn't find a guide to help, but will try and remember the " width=80" bit.  :blah:

Agreed; much of the eevBlog UI is pretty archaic. OTOH, that seems apropos for a thread dedicated to the collection of prehistoric electronics.  :-DD

Not everybody has the patience to edit whole lists of images like I do; however, if you want to embed a single row of nice neat images as thumbs, you can use " height=80" instead and put the images all on the same line with no carriage return / [ENTER] button. Again, quote this message to see the exact syntax. Once you get used to remembering to do it, the process is pretty easy cut/paste.

Glad to hear you won it, even if it cost a bit more than you wanted because of the scarcity. I have a nice 523C variant, but no neon column readout versions of any HP counter.

I think these counters are almost extinct in the UK, both of mine (521E & 523C) came from overseas. I do have a manual for the late versions of the 524 & sadly know of at least two that have been destroyed in the Nottingham area of the UK (after parts appeared on evilbay).  :'(

David

I certainly only bid as high as I did because I NEVER see them.  And as for anyone who says sniping doesn't pay, this is a textbook example showing that it does.  Had I bid a few seconds earlier, it may well have gone even higher as the other bidder could potentially have incremented more.  As it was, that second early cost me.

A 524 showed up on the bay a few months ago, but it was in Ohio or that vicinity, IIRC, and was pick up only.  Don't think I wasn't tempted to make a road trip!  Another  came up a few years ago on the HP mailing list, but it was in the Bay Area out in CA, and the guy didn't want to ship.  My travels only take me tothe LA area, and getting up north wasn't practical or I'd have asked him to hold it till my next visit, then grabbed it and shipped it myself.  If I knew then what I know now, I might have tried to convince him to pack it up.  I don't know what ever became of that one; I hope it was not parted out.  (I should really probably seek counseling for this addiction.  Is there a methadone equivalent for TEA?)  I recently snagged a 523C, too, so it's been a good few months as vintage HP iron goes!

It really grinds my gears and makes me see red when people part things like this out.  Some prick bastard just sold the bits to an old Cubic DVM - the old lucite plate display type - on the bay recently.  They still have boards and case, but sold off the stepper relays, display module and I believe some other things as well.

I've no idea if they'd previously tried to sell the entire meter as a whole (I kind of doubt it, given the prices they were asking for the components), as at the time I didn't have space for that search term in my feed.  Cubic has now been added, so if one comes up I can try to save it from a similar fate.

I posted this in another thread but you might get a kick out of it - check the label.

This is probably a holdover/copied from when these things were still made by reputable companies here in the US. Used to be, at least from 3M, they came in a UV-protective baggie with that warning. Nylon rots with exposure to daylight; here in Texas they'll turn yellow and brittle in just a few months sitting on a windowsill.

Then it would make more sense to say 'keep unused in the bag' wouldn't it?

Not another one  :'( , that idiot has already ruined a working HP 405AR and no it wasn't ever offered complete as far as I can tell.  Sadly most sellers only seem interested in pulling the tubes from the larger boatanchor test equipment and dumping the rest (or what doesn't sell).

Just a suggestion thought, perhaps those that would part out a working unit deserve a similar fate.  :-//

just so you know..... was unaware of that listing and was not the guy bidding against you.

But it sure looks like a beautiful piece of frequency counter history, and I am jealous.

Small variac received.

*good enough*

Now being placed in closet until needed.

That's a nice blue one. Is the shaft on the auto-transformer live? All the ones I see from China have that huge gap exposing the shaft. At least on the old variacs I have or have seen, the shaft is not isolated, which would be quite disturbing with a knob that didn't adequately shield it from fingers.

How about you (bitseeker) add it to the original post (with the glossary).  People could then go there, copy the image address and use that to add the image in their post.  An explanation could be given as well.

Yes, that is Plan B. Since xrunner proposed getting it added as an icon, it's currently Plan A.

Who says we can't have both?

Wasn't me. Adding.

Done. See the new section, "Post Icons," in the OP. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/test-equipment-anonymous-(tea)-group-therapy-thread/

No it isn't isolated.  :bullshit:

You can measure the dialed-up output AC from the hot pin of the AC plug to the shaft. Oh yea - and the set screw too.  :-[

A couple nights ago I was suffering some insomnia; out of boredom I put on my RPG slippers and poured a glass of warm almond milk and bourbon and started writing. For over an hour.  :palm: I was going to post it all at once but it was really too much... then I got waylaid by family time and work orders before I could finish editing it down to "amusement" rather than *OMG my brain hurts* size.  :-DD

So I'm going to break it up into 3 parts as I complete the editing; this should make each installment small enough to be easily overlooked for those not interested, yet easily digestible for those who are amused by such flights of fancy.  ;)

*Prepares several clean buckets and "Next of Kin" notifications in case tonight's game turns kill-y*

Now be fair, that only properly happened once, when one of Bran Mac Muffin's men had two, two priestess cards tucked into his breachclout. What makes it all the more annoying is that Cerebus was all set to empty Weishauptt's pockets fair and square until that barbarian idiot slapped an extra priestess onto the table. Seeing the look on Weishauptt's face would have been much more enjoyable than the sword-fight, probably. But yes, you're most probably right -  for good measure, best add a couple of barrels of sawdust too.
Part 1 : Negotiations and Love Songs

The West dining room was just the right size, and the long hallway that led to it opened just inside the main gate, so was easily defensible by his hand-picked personal guard.  Cerebus preferred to rely on them (to such extent as he trusted anyone)  in case word got to the wrong people (a virtual certainty) and somebody decided to try and take the whole room at once instead of lying in wait on the highways leading to neighboring cities from which all manner of businessmen, middle-level beaurocrats and courtisans had been invited, along with a few select members of various clergy.

Eight tables had been set out with 4 chairs each; even with a 2,000 crown buy-in every seat was claimed. This large assembly would make a very attractive target if one was so intent; fortunately, very few possessed the means and inclination to take such a prize. The huge chamber already echoed with boisterous banter as seats were filled; meanwhile, not too far away a much more intimate meeting was coming to an end...

Cerebus sat on the edge of the bed contemplating a scar on his left foot for a few moments, wondering how he'd ever allowed himself to become a "responsible party".  Then, shaking his head, he reached for his most comfortable trousers and tugged them on in preparation for the Match Diamondback tournament at the other end of the castle.  The funk of the afternoon's "conference" still hung heavily around him; he smiled knowing that not all who would attend were human, and some would also be able to detect the lingering traces of his tryst with the amply-endowed Brandi.

"Oh, don't go..." she purred, nibbling on one ear while rubbing that spot in his back.

"Cerebus must... this tournament will bring together important people from all three city-states, and several of the surrounding territories. It ain't just about looting a bunch of easy marks... this is about making contacts. Our city's economy alone could double over the next few years if Cerebus plays his cards right."

Brandi pouted. "But I love the feel of your fur when you're not covered in gore. I could bathe you again..." she offered, pulling on his shoulders. He paused for a moment, genuinely tempted. But only for a moment.

"Later... there'll be time for lots of that later, and I'm sure there will be something sparkly in the pot that's just perfect for your delightful neck." Brandi's emerald eyes glittered as she winked. "Something that matches these?"
"If there isn't, we'll go shopping."  the earth-pig promised with a sly grin over his shoulder, now fully dressed and gallumphing out the door.

End Part 1 ; Continued Tomorrow with Part 2: Whether Earth-pigs Have Wings

Hope it's not too far or too much.

Thanks for the tip!  I would definitely be interested, but unfortunately it's way too far from where I go when out on the left coast.

If it were closer to LA (rather than I have no idea how many hours north - it's north of San Fransisco), it would be a contender.  I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that something pops up closer to home...
