@med6753, I couldn't begin to imagine how she feels about that, it was sheer hell just watching it live over here on the TV let being there and involved like she was , she has mine and I'm sure most of us on here, full respect. I just not know how I'd have reacted had I had been standing in her shoes, but I expect that in such events your training just kicks and you get stuck in helping whoever you can.

Please convey to her my thanks for everything she did during those terrifying days, respect man.  :-+ :-+

That's a fact, not sure if this one will be going back on the bay or not, but I'll be back there looking for more broken gear that I could fix and turn around again for new lease of life a bit of profit.  :)

Thanks. She's a very special lady. I have a lot of respect for her too. I'm just glad she wasn't at ground zero itself. Because all those cops and fireman who where there are dying everyday.

She's retiring in January after near 30 years on the force. She can't wait to get out.

Oh this type 2 diabetic cheats on occasion too. You have to or you'll go nuts. My A1C stays between 6.3 and 6.5 and I control it with 1 oral med and diet. (It was 7.9 when I was diagnosed 4 years ago! :scared:) No insulin shots required. I don't check my blood sugar but every 6 months I have blood work done and my fasting blood sugar is usually 80 - 100. And my weight is normal for my height and I make sure to keep it that way. So I'm diagnosed as a "controlled diabetic".
My A1C has been sitting at 5.9.  I also go every 6 months but I do check fasting glucose every morning.  I hate to admit it but I am very overweight.  However, since being in the hospital 2 weeks ago for a week with a small bowel obstruction and having to have a naso-gastric tube crammed through my nose and sinuses into my stomach, I am finally listening to my doctor.  I am not sitting for hours everyday in front of the work/home computer.  I am getting up and walking around every hour or so.  The missus and I have filled the tires back up on our expensive but underused bikes and we are riding in the evenings and I am watching what I eat.  Between the hospital stay and last week, I have shed 10 pounds, thankfully without dieting, smaller portions and common sense eating.  It may take 2 years to lose the weight I need to lose, but I will get it off and keep it off this time.

An A1C of 5.9 is good. That puts you in the "pre-diabetic" category. Type 2 runs in my Mother's side of the family so I got the whammy. I found the biggest contributor to control was diet and weight. Prior to diagnosis I was 203 pounds on a 6 foot frame. While that's not considerably over weight it certainly doesn't help. It took me almost a year but I'm down to between 170 - 175 pounds and I've kept it there for almost 3 years. And it's tough to do because the shitty American diet is big on portion size, big on sodium, big on sugar, and most of all big on carbs. That's the killer. It really sucks that 90% of what you see in the grocery store you can't buy/eat because it's all processed foods high in that crap. So I've had to learn to cook and prepare low carb meals myself. But every once in a while you gotta break out and pig out.  :-DD

No TEA activity this weekend. The lady is coming for the weekend. (She's also diabetic so we suffer together). But we are going to the New York Airshow on Saturday. Maybe I'll get some pictures but I'm not a shutter bug so don't count on it.  :P

Just checked mine, 5.8. Greywoolfe, for easier mass loss just avoid any foods which contain wheat, corn, corn syrup or potato or other starch. Lots of green vegetables, lots of cabbage and you will find your weight, blood pressure and glucose dropping off fast. Had to drop BP medication to near nothing, and probably in another year I will be off it totally now. Dinner tonight reheated veg I made last weekend, cabbage (savoy cabbages for a change), broccoli, mushrooms and some pumpkin, all done in the same pot, along with a small sweet potato, along with a generous addition of "Lord Of the Ring" hot chilli as kicker.

Curious to hear your guys opinions on this shelf. (SNIP)
Opinons? Rants? Rotten tomatoes? I welcome all forms of comments on this particular shelf.  Also note the miter saw and other tools are only temporary occupants.
I think it depends much more on how you're supporting it at this point, which we can't see very well. What you've built as the shelf itself could hold up one end of a Volkswagen.  :-DD

Go printer, go!

It's going... but the corners have started to lift up.  |O

Crazy bit is it is quite symmetrical, and it keeps building level on top of the curved bottom...  I've checked it with a straightedge, and everything it's building now is straight & square.

There is a very quiet war going on in the back of my mind over what to do... Part of me is  >:( as hell; this is a simple base layer adhesion problem,  probably due to something stupid like me being a little heavy-handed with the hairspray during prep. Part of me is just  as hell; thinking "Fuggetabboudditt... let's see how this plays out."

I'll probably allow this debate to rage until it either fucks up the print so bad it becomes unusable (essentially my approach with the first layer shift last time), or I realize as I sip my morning coffee that there was something my not-quite-awake-yet brain overlooked.

Here we just crunch metformin and carry on as usual  :-DD

TBH it's really difficult. Everything ready made is crap as you say and there is constant promotion of even more crap and the crap is the cheapest. Food in the UK is turning into food in the US while our health authority is complaining about obesity being the number one cause of everything. Poverty, marketing and a race to the bottom is mostly the cause of this.

I am slightly lucky I suspect due to my swiss and german background. They basically lived on sugar for the last 200 years. It killed off all the weaker genetic lines pretty sharpish and left me with super genetic sugar tolerance. I can eat a whole biberfladen and dig out SWMBO's test kit and it hasn't budged from nothing.  :-DD  I hope it lasts.
Everything you've both said here is spot-on especially about the race to the bottom in EVERYTHING. This is precisely what I'm fighting tooth and claw in my own weight-loss battle; it's hard to eat healthy when the only thing ordinary folk can afford is crap that's 50% fat and 50% cereal filler.  |O  I haven't been diagnosed as diabetic... yet. But I know I'm on the waiting list.  :-\

I was a member of my hometown VFD in my youth; made many good friends during training with larger departments in Syracuse & Rochester, & several of our VFD family moved to Buffalo and were later part of the post-disaster mobilization that drew from all the CNY fire departments. 2 who died during the mobilization had done training with us; no idea how many of the rest survived their exposure to the toxic silt and runoff. *Sigh*

med6753, pictures would be great please. I love air shows and I like photography so its a great opportunity for to combine the two, often I'll take about 1,000 plus photos at a show.

UK air shows will I think slowly die away though because of new rules and regulation following that fateful crash of an old jet fighter onto a major road killing around 10 people. These days they are forced into having nearby roads closed during a show and moving the display axis so far away and high from the crowd line that unless its a large plane being displayed, they almost become dots in the sky. Photography then becomes useless at that point unless you happen to have a lens of at least 400 - 600mm focal range.  :palm:

Yet they still allow low altitude flight practice in Snowdonia and the Lake District that is so low that more than once I've been worried of getting an impromptu haircut.  :-//

There is a real reason, well more than one really, but I'll be brief or else Cerebus might run and fetch his controversial cutlery  :-DD

When they do that it is planned and well calculated and everyone in the area is aware of the practise of low flying in the pass and it is restricted to military aircraft only and is not open to civilian pilots at all as the entire area is a restricted area for military flying only and is always covered by permanent NOTAMS and is clearly marked on the aviation maps that I've seen.

It is just about the only place in this country where the pilots can practise and hone their skills at flying low level and keeping out of the sight of radar, just as they would fly if possible in a combat zone for obvious reasons. They also do it there where Cerebus lives because not only is the terrain just right but it is also an area where there is hardly any population to speak of, its hard to build on the side of mountains so in the unlikely event of a crash it's unlikely to cause a major lose of life.

It depends on what you're wanting.

If you're wanting commercial-finish product ready to use right off the printer, there is no such thing that isn't an utter PITA to use and not fit to use (good to put on a shelf and admire its crystal-like finish, but nothing useful) for functional product. I'm looking at you, SLA.  ::)

If you want to make stuff of functional quality and you can live with the finish inherent in FDM 3DP, then my personal experience with the Tornado is proof that it's a mature, consumer-ready product. Admittedly, there are two ends of the spectrum... small build volume and expensive but Facebook crowd easy-to-use (Makerbot, FormLabs, XYZ) right out of the box vs reasonably large build volume and reasonably-priced but a medium-steep learning curve (CReality, FolgerTech, Tevo) and hardware that's truly "minimal assembly required" like the road I've taken with the Tornado.

I certainly cannot recommend that ANYONE go the full-kit build route as a first printer like I did with the Tarantula, unless you have a large club right at hand to help you get it working right. You'll be mad enough to eat bees a couple hours after you open the box, no bullshit.  :-DD

I’m happy with full kit route myself. Genuinely that’s the fun part of the journey if you’re a sick twisted person like myself. When something doesn’t work I run towards it not away. I spent a number of years building radio control cars, right back to the old Schumacher Bosscat, cat 2000. Also I’ve owned a Land Rover series 3. You can’t be screwed harder for set up than those money pits.

In fact the less assembled it is the better. More meticulous assembly and heat shrinking to do :)

I’m actually trying to pluck up the courage to say fuck it to the exchange rate at the moment and buy a stacked Elecraft K2 kit before they discontinue them and I’m permanently laden with regret.

Nope.

See for one of many examples.

7000 series tek, 7704A to be exact. Should have specified but it was 3 in the morning, regardless i woke up this morning and realized the only way to be sure was to be sure. Went out and did a chin up on the shelf and given that i weigh at least 3 times as much as the scope and that the shelf didn't seem to care i then put the scope up there. Shelf didn't budge, watched for five minutes nothing happened, took a picture and still nothing happened, conclduing the experiment i took the oscilloscope back down and put it back where it was. So then to look at the empirical evidence, it can take 250 pounds, it will only have to take 100 at most, most deflection is due to the beam itself not being secured at the top (which i intend to fix), and the final bit of evidence being that with me watching it held the scope effortlessly i can then conclude that it can safely hold the oscilloscope. Unless i'm full of  :bullshit: and delusional.

This is the low level flight to which I'm referring and is totally blind to radar because they are flying mainly below the peaks so that they maintain the element of surprise if they were in combat.

This was filmed from the backseat of an RAF Typhoon flown by 2013 display pilot Jamie Norris on an ultra-low level sortie through the Mach Loop and the Lake District.

No, and I wasn't implying that either  :) But the areas I was mentioning is off limits to private aviation and pilots and the radar I was referring to would have been that from an enemy trying to detect incoming attacking aircraft, which is why the RAF and USAF use the areas mentioned because radar cannot penetrate the mountains, it is essentially a line of sight system and the valleys allow the pilots to practise their radar avoidance flying skills. :-+

Radar avoidance, I think not!

Tis one badass motherfucker. So much so everyone is building the damn things. Eventually we’ll all be fighting in space. Which will at least be cool in the films 20 years after the event.

I think I mentioned before that my lady is a cop. Specifically she's NYPD School Safety Division. Guess when her birthday is? September 11th. Guess where she was on September 11, 2001? At a school about 10 blocks from WTC. She saw the whole thing. She said she will never forget the smell. The smell of death. The images of cops assisting pedestrians across the Brooklyn Bridge to get out of Manhattan? She was there. She was on duty 3 days straight before she could go home.

Woah! :o

Quote
Needless to say even 17 years later that event has put a permanent damper on her birthday. So I try to play it up as much as I can. When she gets here later today she will be greeted with this. It's the least I can do for her.

Yes, there's a cake there and we're gonna eat it.     :-DD

Nicely done, med! :-+ Don't forget to cook the steaks. :-DD

My latest Ebay purchase has arrived, sold as not working, a Teac CR-H250 receiver, advertised as power LED is on but will not switch on. Thought the bloody thing just needed a couple of capacitors in the power supply, so I'd have something at last to get teeth into on the bench, but no, how fecking wrong was I. :palm:

Looks great, Spec. Quite compact.

Opened it up and a CD was wedged in the tray, wrestled it free and the tray opened up and the unit now works perfectly
