Ok then here the photos of the 2 Solartron 7150 plus meters that I managed to win at last weeks auction. They have cleaned up really well, fully functioning and appear to with a few micro volts of their DC specification which is fine for me as I have no desire to slip down into that particular rabbit hole thank you very much. More on this later as they are both now awaiting the arrival of new mains filters after when spilled its guts last night  |O Both of them will eventually have the yellow dim back light LEDs replaced with some high power white LEDs to increase the lighting level of the display.

Year of manufacture is 1988 and I have not cleaned the insides as it was not required and considering these are 31 years old then I think the filters are entitled to be dicky if they have been left powered up all this time.

This one has the handle / bail missing so I'm looking for one of those.
Both of these came in their leather carrying case, less the covers.
Both had these stickers on them and years of grime.
Cases all cleaned up a treat, like new ones.
Side view showing handle stowed flat.
One with the handle in use as a stand.
Both front on, still slight sticker residue shown, now removed
Bottom board and front panel
Top board.

First, the buy of the day, a Tektronix 2246 at auction with a starting bid of only 99.99USD...

BTW, shipping is 107.20USD

Only hours left...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tektronix-2246-opt-1Y/323777886235?hash=item4b62aa781b:g:ySQAAOSwHghcpl69

Tonight I am going to be back in the second of the two garages, helping sort through the remaining test gear and ham radio equipment. There are five pieces of  gear, some old Tek scope plugins, and a cardboard bin full of parts that might be of value. Mostly, I am hoping to separate out the stuff he can sell without too much trouble on ebay (mostly amateur radio gear) and find some useful discrete components for myself.

@menm Yeah, fair point, all the same I'm making that modification to the plug end, unlike the surge suppressors etc built into power bars which need to be on 24/7 to protect other gear, its still in my book bad design in the meter to do it that way round, my Flukes 8840A and 8842A do not have this mains filter system and they don't suffer any effects from having unfiltered mains wiring within the enclosure. I mean why introduce another potentially ticking time bomb and fire hazard into the system :palm:

Just found a very cool feature on my Racal 9915 counter. On the A input (40-520MHz) it has an AGC and a corresponding AGC output on the back of the unit.

So I was just building a frequency multiplier as I need a 30MHz source and only have 25MHz AWG (fail!). Easy enough - just shove a grounded emitter amp with a 30MHz tank on it (600nH + 22-ish pF) into the front of your 10MHz source (Rigol AWG). Well turns out if you plonk your DMM (or voltmeter) across the two AGC terminals on the back it'll allow you to get a rough signal strength indication. Pop it on the multiplier and tune for max value and job done! Very handy.

they say the road to recovery for an addict is realizing you have a problem.

Doesn't work for TEA. Had the realization long ago. Still here. :-DD

The problem is that the road to recovery turns out to be blocked by an avalanche of a dozen or so oscilloscopes.

Why not just plug them into an outlet strip? Or a power management center with multiple switches?

I get the why for the design; it's to keep unfiltered power OUTSIDE the unit. This is TOTALLY VALID; especially today, the world is an EMI/RF hostile environment. Why would you invite all that common-mode noise INSIDE with your uber-sensitive measuring equipment's  delicate innards?

The problem is that the road to recovery turns out to be blocked by an avalanche of a dozen or so oscilloscopes.

Hey!!! I'm shoveling as fast as I can!!!  |O

Just had a socket block give up on me which has never happened before. Arse end 6-way off amazon just lost half the sockets. It's moulded shut I can't get into it.

So I'm looking on Amazon, Screwfix, RS etc and all they sell is shit. Is it possible to get a decent UK mains socket block anywhere these days?

They all seem to be of Chinese origin as far as I can see. You used to be able to buy some fairly decent Belkin ones years ago. I brought one to sit underneath a monitor years ago from Staples, its a Belkin Surge Master Model F5C100u that has 5 switched sockets and 1 flying unswitched socket. It also has sockets to accept a phone line (for the days when we modems) and also Network RJ45 sockets and most of my power strips are controlled via this as well and also strangely enough, most of those also have surge protection build as well. I also have a mini power pole with 10 unswitched 13A sockets (also from Staples but unknown brand) which also has sockets for phone line, modem and network so my gear is petty well protected anyway.    :-+

Not too worried about surge as we have a surge protector built into our CU. Currently looking at these: https://www.brennenstuhl.com/en-AE/products/extension-leads/premium-line-extension-socket-6-way-5m-05vv-f-3g1-25-black-lightgrey-with-plug-gb ... CPC sell them.  Made in Germany instead of China

Yeah, they look OK but they also have surge protection built in. Seems that all this type of thing these days comes with it built in anyway.

Wouldn't doubt it actually, not the way that poor thing looks. Perhaps the perpetrator should be used as a wheel chock next?  >:D

99.99USD + shipping as well. There's no way that's going to sell. Free to a good home so some other poor broken life could possibly be saved otherwise it's landfill.

Fixed the focus and flicker issue on the 2247A, just needed a small adjustment on the astigmatism and readout jitter.  Ended up doing a full cal procedure, came out really nice!  Very happy with it!  Replacement graticule illumination knob on the way, then it will be 100%.
