Anyway it's done, calibrated and it's working nicely. Only outstanding issues are a hefty gash on the shield and the cal signal loop is broken off. I will work out a cunning plan to resolve those issues shortly. Component tester works nicely. Latest date code is around 1983. All capacitors test fine as well.

Edit: some performance measurements:

1. Rise time = 12.5ns ~ 28MHz bandwidth. Not bad
2. 3dB point = 26Mhz. Also not bad.
3. Triggers to = 48MHz. Pretty good
4. Displays signal to = 92MHz. Pretty good.

Not bad for a 20MHz scope.

Luck was on my side yesterday and I scored this nice frequency counter; a BK Precision 1803D.
Sure, it's quite basic for a FC, but a basic frequency counter is better than no frequency counter at all.

Thanks! It's in really nice shape. I ended up swapping the power supply with the one k7je rebuilt in the unit I purchased from him. Probably order the BOM from digikey and rebuilt this one so I'll have two good power supplies.

Sure, it's quite basic for a FC, but a basic frequency counter is better than no frequency counter at all.

Thanks! It's in really nice shape. I ended up swapping the power supply with the one k7je rebuilt in the unit I purchased from him. Probably order the BOM from digikey and rebuilt this one so I'll have two good power supplies.

is that the same ps found in the 54500 series?  almost looks like you could swap a 53310a motherboard into a 54501a and it would work.  (naaaaaw....could never happen)

I've finally got around to opening 1/3 of a previous acquisition.

If I can't figure out how to use it, at least I should be able to recoup my investment...

The serried ranks are all 20K 0.005% Vishay VHP202K resistors. I believe the handwritten number are the serial numbers. A quick google indicates they are oil-filled bulk metal foil resistors, and if you have to ask the price, you can't afford them

It might be. These instruments are super modular. The PSU itself is made by a third party, not HP.

I definitely think I'll start obsessing over time accuracy with this counter. But I'll need a good strategy to get gear from eBay first... like a P.O box, a friend willing to receive boxes to my name at his address and then send them to me, or something like that.

... and then you can move onto the delicious (and fairly widely available) Panaplex displays. They are so restful and harmonious that every home should have some. (But please not anything with a red filter so they look more like LEDs!).
