Personal conclusion:
If it was available for 1K€-1.5k€ I wouldn't go for it because of the cons, especially the missing docs.
Spend more time to save money to get a 3458A later.      

The lack of schematics is a real issue with this kind of meter as it essentially makes it unrepairable except for the most basic of faults.
For the 1281, the service manual is one of the most detailed I have seen and weighs very strongly in its favour.

TBH, the documentation is the nest thing I look for when looking at TE, if its not available, steer well clear of it. Also, I meant that there is a lot of people who will be struggling to keep heads above the water line over next weeks or so until the various government aid trickles through to them so many will be looking to liquify their assets because no one really knows just we will be facing in a few months time.

Assuming it all doesn't end up at the council tip when relatives haven't got time to deal with it. Or they put it directly in the wheelie bin for the fortnightly collection, as the tips are all closed at the moment, which will probably happen even though e-waste isn't meant to go in the bin.

That's a fair possibility. I bought some stuff of gumtree about 10 years ago (a couple of PL bench power supplies) and the woman was just selling the things that looked like they were worth something. There was a pile in the corner with a vintage Drake full line ham shack that was going to be disposed of because it was old . I did consider offering to dispose of it for her but I wasn't interested in ham radio then and didn't want the hassle but I explained how much it and all the other stuff around was worth and pointed her at ebay. I watched her sell it all for just short of £3k. I can imagine how much stuff just goes in a skip.

Yep, whenever I make a trip to our local tip, there are special bays for old appliances and electronics and the staff there are pretty switched on and anything that looks remotely interesting is whisked away and put way beyond where the public cannot access, so I suspect that they list on various sites for sale.

Yep, it's an interesting piece of TE indeed. Have read much of the available information on xdevs and linked sites including the thread on the eevblog forum.

Pros:
- It's in the league of the 3458A
- It's offers tend to around 1/3 of those for the 3458A
- Some specs are better than 3458A
- Very comprehensible UI
- Easy calibration (cost!)
- lightweight

Cons:
- Linearity seems to be "only" 2/3 of the 3458A
- some specs are worse the 3458A
- Documentation available in Japanese only
- no schematics available

Personal conclusion:
If it was available for 1K€-1.5k€ I wouldn't go for it because of the cons, especially the missing docs.
Spend more time to save money to get a 3458A later.      

Cons:
- 120 or 300 V max (depending on the model)
- No AC, ACI

So this morning (before having enough coffee), I accidentally blew my Hao Qi Xin voltage reference by connecting it to the wrong charger. It now no longer charges or turns on (even after manually charging the Lipo back up). Is there a schematic floating around for this device, or is it not worth repairing, ie: cheaper to buy a new one?

So I decided to do some diagnosis. The charge controller (UN8HX) and a dual MOSFET (8205A) which seems to have been doing input protection are both fried. When I remove/by-pass these, the device still works as expected. If I had them in my parts bin, I'd go to the bother of fixing the voltage reference, but the cost of the parts plus shipping from China is about the same as buying a new device and the shipping time would probably be the same too. I may convert it to run from an 18650 (if I could be arsed, which I couldn't be at the moment).

Yeh, the UN8HX on mine blew as it sits right below the positive socket and a slightly long banana plug touched it and shorted it. Replaced it and placed some Kapton tape over it, and its back in operation again.

My self-employed daughter will get zero; she falls through all the cracks.

Too much money in a save-to-buy-house ISA => no universal credit.
No business premises => no business grants.
Only started trading last year => no self-employment grant.

Thanks, saw those, but the 8205A needs to be a TSSOP-8 package, using a SOT23-6 would be too much messing about for my liking. The spanish offer is misleading. He says TSSOP-8 but shows a SOT23-6.

Also, the total for both components would be almost €10. I can buy the entire device for €14 delivered.

Is acetone a hand sanitisier? 

I once washed my mouth out with (a small amount of) acetone in a school chemistry experiment. I was sucking it out of a beaker using a pipette, and there wasn't quite enough in the beaker - so air was entrained.

I say delivered, more like played knock-a-door-run, which is pretty much standard at the moment.

They are only baby ones, that I got for fifteen quid each shipped:


They're worth it just for the multi-way surge protected sockets, with the nice large casings giving me the ability to add remote switch outputs using big relays. The batteries (not included) are only 5Ah, can't imagine much back-up time with that...

As expected, the inverter outputs are laughably horrible:


I certainly won't be using them for any TE!     I have a 1500VA true sine inverter for that anyway.

I might use the inverter guts for backing up some lighting where I still use incandescants, or just salvage the parts.


That posting about AD584 references got my trigger finger twitching, and I duly did the deed on a couple of different ones from Shenzen, both claiming to be using the L grade. We shall see.
