   Re Coffee mugs, I had to bring up an HP Classic, the fundamental equations and constants, F to C conversion, a angle guage, a crude clock and it holds coffee. There still are a few out there - the logo in my mind puts in 70s or 80s.When backpacking I used a single layer stainless steel mug, which also did duty as a small cooking pot, weight and durability rules. I tended to drink tea when backpacking as it is lighter to carry and I refuse to drink instant coffee.

for grins, i wandered off to ebay to see if anyone had this fabulous mug.   

fifty bucks plus, i dunno, ten or twelve more for shipping was a little rich for my blood.

SOMEBODY apparently grabbed it - just looked and it sold earlier today.  Definitely a very cool mug.  Fifty clams plus shipping is a bit rich, but I'd have been sorely tempted given the cool factor and (I'd think) rarity.  I suppose I should be glad the temptation has been removed - more $$ for boat anchors.

And to close out my notable (to me) knives and tools, a couple more from the fishing bag.
The small kit of screwdriver tips has saved the day repairing an old outboard motor in the back of beyonds where nuthing else was available. 
The $5 POS knife has gutted more Rainbow trout than I care to think about and every one was yummy !

You guys certainly do like your compound words, don't you?  Why use four or five short words for something when you can mash them all into one that's fifty-seven letters long?  

There should be a rule that you can't use more than the total number of letters in the alphabet in any single word!   

(Must suck when a teacher assigns a 500 word paper and it winds up being 80 pages long!)

Welp...  I just bought an HP 8643A Sig Gen from the teetering-on-the-edge ebay guy linked here a few days ago.  Threw a relatively low bid in; never thought I'd get it.  $96 plus shipping.  Holy crap, I'm out of my mind!

I got these compact ones on AliExpress. Came in a bag of 100. They only protrude 1-2mm, depending on the fit.

While going back and watching an old Mr. Carlson's lab this past weekend

I suddenly had a thought. Sure enough, the Jim Williams pulser prototype I last build makes a superb TDR head that's far cheaper than a "real" one. I compared it with tape measure for various cables I have on hand and it is extremely accurate, and has excellent resolution. The extremely narrow pulse the design provides by default provides really nice performance for TDR. It can detect the reflection from an adapter installed on the tee.

Some weeks ago I've ordered some red translucent acrylic stuff in China and today I made a little filter for the LEDs.

I like the result.   

I do, too. That's a neat project and much better with the acrylic window.

I decided to try a long shot and bought a broken Keysight 82357B GPIB / USB adapter for 30$. How hard can it be to fix ? Probably just a cap right ? I'm sure it's working fine and the current owner don't know how to test it. Well when I received it, it was effectively dead 

...

After a lot of fettling and swearing because of my cheap microscope, the repair was eventually a success, got another GPIB adapter to play with 

Wow, that was an adventurous purchase. Thanks for sharing. I had been curious what those "for parts" ones might be like. Catastrophic silicon failure. I wonder how common it is in those chips because there seem to often be parts units on the bay.
