Today my EPROM Eraser showed up which I've bought

<snip>

But I'm convinced, it will for sure not meet the VDE safety standards or the CE standards (EMI).

After or before you've enhanced it?  :-DD :-DD

Seriously, the major problem with self-certification along the CE marking model is that it lacks "nuke'm from orbit, land, plow the land and spread salt over the fields" termination clauses in the legislation. It is largely painless and cheap to get caught peddling broken stuff, so people take their chances, especially if they're only one step in the value chain. There is always someone else to blame.

The old SEMKO / DEMKO / VDE / UL / CSA model was hampering innovation and was a market blocker; we do not want that again. What we need is a way for manufacturers and vendors to feel the pain.

I think the C-tick model is good. similar to CE in that you self certify, but you have to register that you did it online. This at least means the authorities have some idea of what is being produced / imported and can identify "certifiers" and products for targeted or random compliance checks. CE relies on n accident or complaint (and some customs inspection) before the authorites even know the item exists.

Caps replaced. Look at these bastards. The cracked ones were actually across the switch not the mains which was interesting. One of the smaller ones is missing the top because I popped it with the pliers getting it out.

BD,
Are you including the backlight mod?

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/hp-3457a-lcd-backlight-mod-(also-for-3478a)/msg227880/#msg227880

Frans

Not with this one. My objective with kit is a relatively uncompromising restoration to original condition and repair only. I will suffer the shitty display for that  or at least until a 3456A turns up :-DD

It isn't as easy as it looks to get them out but you can do it without messing up the cal data:

Rear ones (1000pF Y2's between line and ground):

1. Unplug the rear IEE488 cable from the board.
2. Replace (easy but a bit fiddly)

Side ones (22nF Y2's across switch):

1. take side frame of instrument off (7 screws)
2. Loosen power switch
3. Desolder old ones wiggling slowly and pull out with tweezers
4. Stuff new ones in (painful but doable)

No cal data risk there. Unless you drop something on the board  :-DD
