By the way, is all the bruising gone on your toe?  If the bone has set, the bruising should be all gone by now and you should be walking, albeit with a slight bit of pain.  If it is still bruised, get yourself to a doctor to get the bone properly set.  How do I know?  I did battle with the sheet metal side of my new used above ground pool in a wind storm about a month ago; the wind won and my toe lost.

It is a bit uncanny how we find ourselves in similar situations.

Well Mnem's got an excuse, he was walking downstairs indoors. You haven't. Please folks, wear safety boots/shoes/trainers if you're working with things heavy enough to break toes - they're so cheap there's no excuse not to own a pair and use them.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Found this in my inbox this morning; good for another 16 hours. Metal frame, monitor shelf, lots of gimmick storage, and 42in x 24in surface with contoured belly-cutout so all us Meal Team 6ers can feel nicely ensconced.  :-DD

Too bad I'm not in the US... and I'm already overloaded with desks.  :palm:

I'd say that definitely is a case-by-case thing... we have the sleeping Policemen up here too, and not a problem; tho there are also some steep driveways where just the hitch bottoms out sometimes.   :palm:

It all boils down to the vehicle and the loading; my Eldos I could put 800 lbs tongue weight on the hitch and it would just pump up the airbags to compensate. I've also seen Ford escorts with a huge Jazzy scooter on the back, which is pretty much the same thing as my fanny pack, only more weight. The fanny pack itself weighs about 60lbs, with an advertised capacity of 500lbs.

I'd say in most cases, you should be able to carry as much on this thing as two adults in the back seat, no matter what. Just not necessarily both at the same time; it may require some help like air bags or HD struts.  :-//

   https://www.amazon.ca/PEAKTOW-PTL0431-Submersible-Including-Grommets/dp/B078SJXS4Q/

Lights are easy... IIRC, those metal inserts are for these oval grommet-mount tail lights, which are pretty close to plug & play. Pop in the grommets, pop 'em the grommets, then add/connect a 4-wire ribbon cable and done.

mnem

Here in Canada, lights may be required if your cargo obscures the stock lights of the car.
For a extra long load extending over 24", you do need a red flag or other marker; your reflective tape is better than most people do.
I doubt the cops will give you any trouble.  They will probably be more concerned about automated tolls that use photos of your rear license plate to send out the invoice.

By the way, here is a much better deal on lights, and supports local business:
https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/7-in-led-universal-stop-turn-tail-cargo-carrier-lights/A-p8726911e;jsessionid=OHH+A8cgdBXRr+ZEHSA0rTf4.pal-prod-com3

Those carriers do not work on all vehicles.  There is no chance at all that my Impreza could handle a carrier.   If I need a bit bigger, I will borrow SWMBO's SUV (grocery getter), and hope she does not damage the Impreza in the meantime.  If I need something like a snowblower, then it is time to start up the truck, or add a trailer as needed (10, 20 or 29 feet long options).

I hope your carrier fits a 2" or 2.5" hitch receiver.  I would never trust anything that heavy on a 1-1/4" receiver...

My lawnmower is still not rebuilt; missing a 13-1/2" wheel and even the evil bay is out of stock.  I tried new old stock last year, but the plastic of those wheels was so aged and brittle that the wheels are broken again...

Those lights look interesting and def a deal, as they include the flat-ribbon cable. I'd personally prefer the 6in oval ones as much better visibility. They are a standard item, even in any truck stop; have been around for decades as most flat deck trailers use them. No doubt they can be found locally as well. Like many people, I just use Amazon as an example because they are so easy to reference.

I spent literally hours yesterday looking for some pics I took of the back of the car with the fanny pack and totes all in place; it was like it was MADE for the car. Taillights and license completely unobscured, and even with a huge suitcase on top, you could still clearly read the numbers on the plate.

As for mower parts... I've always had luck finding the odd bit here & there by scouring Craigslist (& now Kijiji) for the guys who offer to BUY lawnmowers for cash; usually they're more than happy to sell you the odd wheel or pull-starter for a sane price.

Just realize that they usually know to the penny what actual new parts prices are on the stuff the fix all the time... so you aren't going to get a deal like me buying everything I needed for $15 in a parts machine. I just got lucky I beat them to that one.  :-DD

As for the toe... it still hurts like a summitch, but it's the least of my pains right now. The abuse of hauling and manhandling multiple pieces of heavy equipment over the last week with no recovery time has pretty much crippled me yesterday and this morning; I have massive sciatica on both hindquarters and (hopefully just) a bursitis in my left knee that literally borders on collapse if I'm not extra careful of it. Even after going to bed early and sleeping a solid 10 hours I still woke up feeling like roadkill this morning.

(sore after a 7m long tumble off my mountain bike down a 30degree slope and 5 sutures to my lower lip - where the f****g bike hit me)

I hope the injuries were minor and that you bounce back quickly.  Get back on the bike as soon as you can!!!
(I did a similar thing once; the handlebar snapped due to metal fatigue on a steep descent)
That sounds like a cartoon plot! But not funny if you are the one sitting on the bike seat!
I am back riding again - I think it actually helps some of the milder bruises. Stitches out - he did a good job 👍
I had a friend whose ex bike mechanic forgot to tighten the stem attachment to the front forks, during a descent the handlebars lifted off in his hands, fortunately the brake cables were not effected, and he was able to lean-steer until he could stop.

I know a guy whose ex-mechanic forgot to tighten the bolts in his car's front suspension!  -  he discovered it when the car changed lanes by itself at 70mph on the motorway...   :scared:

Usually what I've seen are scrap safety vests or yellow shopping bags tacked on the end of lumber that extend past the end of people's vehicles.  I spent some time helping a friend build a deck a couple of summers ago and got to see how various people took care of that at the lumber yard we visited frequently during the project.  My friend actually got a ticket because he picked up a couple of planks he needed for the deck and wedged them into the passenger footwell of a beat up junk Mustang convertible he was driving at the time and they extended up between the two front seats, across the back, and ended over top of the trunk.  They didn't extend past the rear end of the car so he didn't think he needed a flag, didn't put one on, and got hit with a ticket which he planned to fight.  I need to ask what happened with that.

As for licence plate visibility to 407 toll scanners, I suspect most things that would interfere with those would interfere with the plates being visible in general.  I flat out refuse to use the 407.

I never knew about that place .... I worked just west of there (just on the other side of Hwy 401) in the 90s.  All the workplaces moved out to Mississauga/Oakville as that area gentrified.  I left the GTA 17 years ago since it was getting way too congested.

Edit:  Oh, and I joined those workplaces when they were Canadian companies and left when they were American companies... but not for that reason.

It's got to be one of the last disaster zone surplus shops going where you can get industrial castoffs for reasonable prices and I bought a number of pieces of bench equipment there over the last 2-3 years.  I wonder how long they and the other commercial/light industrial businesses in the area will be around for with all the gentrification going on in Toronto, especially in that area once the condo developers started moving in after christening the area the "Castlefield Design District".

Vaughn and Markham are another two places that have had a lot of workplaces relocate from Toronto.  The city's really split into a financial services and soft tech hub, playground for the rich, and a barracks for the army of low wage/gig economy workers that do the grunt work of keeping all of the service and hospitality stuff running with a huge and growing gap in between where the middle used to be.  I'd leave the GTA too if I could cleanly sever ties to the area.

Toes.  I never knew something so small could hurt so much.  I ended up having surgery on one of them and the recovery period was extremely painful.  Then several years after that I had a different toe get crushed in a football game when the player I was blocking stepped on my foot.  Unfortunately one of the pegs on his cleats landed right on top of mine where one of the toes was.  It hurt a bit, I finished the game, but the next day the whole thing turned black and I was limping while it killed for the week after.  I wasn't sure I'd be able to play enough in the next game but luckily it healed up enough by then for me to be able to.

As a matter of fact, I DO know shit from SHINE-ola. :-DD

SHINE is a ADSL susceptibilty, it can be caused by lots of different emitters including SMPS but they are more likely to cause REIN.

Yes, I know; as I said earlier, I looked these terms up to see applicability.  ;) I just don't see SHINE being able to knock out a whole ISP's network unless they're riding the copper bareback with no surge-suppression and it causes power-cycle resets in the rack. Even then, still only talking a few minutes at a time.

For extended widespread outages, I would def suspect some source of SMPS switching noise, especially likely a cheap SMPS brick that may not have proper internal isolation.

I broke my left big toe riding my dirt-bike as a yout'; years and years I raced MX and even a little freestyle, and the only broken bone I ever got was donkin' around the back 40 on my old Suzuki 185.  :palm: Doin' a quick hop over a log (you pop a wheelie to get the front wheel over, then pull short and lean forward so your inertia makes the back tire dig into the log; then drop the clutch a little so it carries you and up & over) just like a thousand times before, only this time I timed it wrong and my foot misplaced just right so the front of my boot caught on the log wrapped around the footpeg. Really lucky that's ALL that got broke; I buddy-splinted that one too.  :P

Worst foot pain ever was when I dropped a transmission off the jack onto my steel-toed boot; it landed just right to concentrate all the impact right on the edge of the steel cup, crushing it into my foot so I couldn't get the boot off. That caused swelling and blood to back up in the foot and toes; it took us a good 20 minutes to cut the toe of my boot apart; good thing it was at old man Belmore's shop and I had him on the 3" whizz-grinder. I was in agony by the time it popped apart; but the old man never even nicked my sock underneath.

Now THAT is what you call a trust-building exercise.  :-DD

Yeah, you have no idea how good you've got it.  :-DD

As much as I have to agree with your thumbnail assessment of Toronto, it is still a quantum leap above Texas, where unless you're a flunkie for Big Oil or you operate a business selling something to big oil, you simply don't exist. And these fuckers shit where they eat; the entire state is a huge toxic waste dump. :palm:

The horrible part is that most of the local 1d10ts there actually think it's a good thing and are cheering them on, even as their kids are dying of a hundred different rare kinds of cancer and leukemia becomes a fucking epidemic... and the worst part is that THOSE politics are what is driving the government of the whole fucking nation right now.

So yeah, it's no surprise that they've started to infect the Great White North; money crosses all borders with impunity. They do pour billions into buying the tar sands in Alberta and the refineries here in Ontario. But it's the Canadian economy propping up the US right now, not the other way around, so I'm still pretty sure it's better on this side of the border, and better here where there's still opportunity to be had.

I grew up in one of the "forgotten towns" that industry and technology had passed over... while the countryside IS gorgeous, and the air is clean, and the water is sweet (well, some of it... a lot of sulfur water thereabouts); there is simply no way to make a living there except for subsistence farming, which the Amish & Mennonites pretty much have a lock on the local resources now.

As my grandmomma used to say... "Yeah it's beautiful; but you can't eat the scenery."

I doubt the cops will give you any trouble.  They will probably be more concerned about automated tolls that use photos of your rear license plate to send out the invoice.

Hmmmm, time to do some research.  I always used 24" as the limit for Ontario & Quebec.  @SkyMaster is quoting 1m.
My trick is to always stock up anywhere that has red plastic shopping bags.  I keep a few in the larger vehicles.  If I am possibly going to haul something large, I use a staple gun to attach the bag to make a flag.  It works really well for lumber.

The case of the Mustang might not be about an overhanging load, but if the load was adequately secured; there is a law for that as well with higher penalties.

Oh, I hate the 407 and avoid it.  That concrete surface generates weird harmonics in the truck tires and I went bonkers within 3 minutes of getting on that highway.  That was during the free introduction; never again even when it was free.  The A20 on the east side of Montreal also uses photo invoicing; $8 ($2 I think if you buy a transponder) to save 1.5 hours on pristine highway is absolutely worth it.  The A30 on the south shore of Montreal is $2+change, but uses toll booths where you have to stop, and again the highway is pristine and can save an hour to go around the city.

Hey, that is different than my technique on the mountain bike.  Thanks!!!, I am going to play around with my technique to see if that helps with the back wheel.  I find I can smoothly float/pop my front wheel over, but always have a hit and loose momentum with the back wheel.

@Cerebus, thanks for the reminder on safety.  It should be a conscious thing.  I actually was wearing trainers, but they were a bit light on the upper.  My mistake was to give the metal a bit of a kick to push it back into place; there was a bit too much frustration with the situation so the kick force was excessive; lesson learned!  The kid saw it happen, so I get scolded every time he wants me to run with him or do something active.  Certainly I did not foresee all the consequences, and have paid more than my due for the error of my ways....

@25 CPS, Oh no!  That is dangerous when they name a neighbourhood; that is always the beginning of the end.  I saw it happen at Young & Eligible (Yonge Street & Eglinton Avenue).  I too still have connections in the GTA, but those have somewhat spread out.  It depends on how close you need to keep those connections.  Greater Ottawa Area to Toronto is about 4 hours by train, 5 by car or 0.5 by plane if urgent; that works for me.

Yeah, just remember that you have to time your pedal stroke as well; you want your favored leg primed, pedal at 1 o'clock or so (this also helps you clear the log)  just as you lean forward and pump down when you feel the back wheel dig in. Avoid front brakes, even tho instinct will tell you otherwise; that will lead to an endo as you're already pushing in that direction. :palm: A quick stab at the back brake only can help you get the nose down quickly if you need to adjust timing. :-+

ohh OMG.

@work boss told me there is a concrete opportunity for me in the USA. Maybe I move there first quartal next year.
THIS CHANGE A LOT OF THINGS.

PS: mnem how to change home in a painless way?

LOLOL... I am so the wrong person to ask on that... I think I picked pretty much the hardest, most painful way to do it possible. :-DD

My best advice is... Pick out ONLY a few bins/totes worth of stuff that has "irreplaceable personal value" connected with it... and a tote or two of the most-needed tools for the job you're moving for... and turn everything else into cash. YOU ARE GONNA NEED IT.

We have paid over US$16K in moving & storage so far, and still no end in sight.  |O
