I received a replacement digital AC meter (round this time) from another seller. It checked out OK this time, so I finished the variac upgrade.

The meter accuracy is acceptable. I tested the ammeter with a heat shrink gun as a load. The gun label indicated it used 300 W, which was pretty close when I set the output voltage to my local line voltage of 124V. The label does state 110V 300W, but it's also labelled 50Hz which is wrong for this area so ... yea.

So we're done with this, getting ready for the hp 437B power meter.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Hmmm... Here there's a $25 minimum for free next day, even for members. Otherwise it's 2-3 day shipping.   [...]
Yeah, I got so tired of that I ended up canceling my membership and live with the fact of 2-3 day shipping (which it had turned into anyway). On the plus side, a ~$100 extra budget per year for toys!
I find there's not much rhyme nor reason for next day minimums.  It seems that to get next day delivery on a lot of things there is a minimum order amount (can't exactly recall if it's $25, $30 or $35; perhaps it varies with the tide and phase of the moon or something), but in this instance there was none.  Perhaps the minimum varies depending on what's in stock where, and they have more local warehouses now so it's a matter of 'a truck is going right by there anyway, add the cheap thing to the load' and get the economy of scale while making the customer happy too.  I haven't been using them as much lately (trying it rein in my profligate spending of late and stop fattening Jeff Bezos' wallet), but in my experience after everything being a horrific mess last year shipping wise that they have, here at least, gotten pretty much back on track with timely deliveries in my neck of the woods.

Here's a new wrinkle... like most Amazon customers, I've grown accustomed to being able to buy more than one similar item when it's something that requires "fitment" and return the one that "fits less" for free. Today I went to return one of the two extended/offset handlebar stems I purchased last week, and the system tried to charge me for return shipping. My net refund would be aboot $6... time and ass-ache printing a return label, packing it back up and taking it to the UPS store is worth more than that. I think I'm just going to throw it in the bike parts drawer (yes, I have one of those now...  :o) and keep it for a spare.

This one is for you Bd. I know you had expressed anxiety and concern for that Sprague black beauty that I forgot to include on the original re-cap BOM for the Type 321A. Well rest your fears....it has been excised and replaced.  ;D

Tomorrow I'll probably start PSU re-cap of the Type 422.

Goodness gracious me. It's amazing what you can do if you decide that it's gonna happen.

And aren't religiously opposed to paying skilled workmen who know what the fuck they're doing; as is the case with pretty much every aspect of modern business. |O

We've gotten so used to making every non-management job so that it can be done by either a monkey or needs somebody with such specialized skill they are unemployable anywhere else... that the idea of someone skilled in general trades is as foreign as that of an honest politician.

I'm back from the Specialist and without all the gory details I have to go back tomorrow for testing and on April 20th for more testing. I'm gonna feel like a fucking pincushion by the time their done. FML.

Stopped on the way home and bought some beer. Yep, Killian's Irish Red. Gonna get mildly shit faced this afternoon. Already had one and damn it tasted good.

UPS finally got their head out of their ass and delivered the Mouser order.
Good on the Mouser order.  :-+

Here's hoping you now have something to occupy your mind until your catheter problems are completely resolved.

Enjoy the beer. Seriously. You’re owed one by the universe now.

Medical shit show here. Monday my middle one had an appointment as she’s been vomiting a lot. Due to an underlying condition they wanted to eliminate neurological causes so they ordered a load of tests for her on Monday afternoon.  And then someone fucked up and sent us home rather than issue us with the departments and times. Because they can’t rebook them from a clinic they had to admit her today to get around it. So in goes canular for contrast MRI and bloods. They took the bloods, urine and did a head MRI with no contrast dye. This took the entire day after sitting there for 5 fucking hours and then all arrived at once at 16:30. And then after two hours the doctor has gone off shift. The new guy sent us home on “night leave” from the ward with no results and told us to come back tomorrow at 10AM to get the results and get the canular out. So I asked the nurse how much time I should take off tomorrow and she sheepishly said “the whole day”.

So I’m down three days of work and she’s not got any results or anything yet. Not fun for her either as she’s autistic and has a strong dependency on routine which they can’t provide, only gobs of uncertainty. This is something I raised with the initial doctor who was so far up her own arse she could see the curiosity rover on Mars with her feet on earth.

This should have been done and dusted on Monday.

Oi...

More medical shitshow.  ::)

Wifey had her 1st Moderna shot yesterday. Today she's all achy and feeling like an ad for death. Also, looking at her paperwork, these dingles scheduled her 2nd shot for middle of August, 112 days from now. Obviously their system just scheduled her return visit as if she were a new patient, not returning for a second dose at a required 21 to 30 days, not more than 42-day interval. Asshats.

Their system needs a dose of bd's high colonic software revision... :palm:

I'm a total wine heathen. I like nice sweet red wines; the kind uncle Giuseppe and his wife served with lasagna or cheese and crusty bread. I also like a snort or three of grappa for dessert.* :-DD I have also drunk wine from a box and liked it, so there.

mnem
*After that... who cares...?

I'm quite fond of wines, but by no means a snob. I think. But I very much like Rhône wines from the better appellations like Chateauneuf-du-Pape and neighbours.  From the US I've had a few decent whites, like Beringer Chardonnays, and some good Zinfandel from Napa.  A grape that can be found all over the world and often produces decent results in skilled hands is Pinot Noir. One should try to go find the local Pinot wherever one goes, just to see what happens. One of our recurrent favourites is a NZ Pinot, from Gardo & Morris. There's a winemaker in the Mosel valley, Walter Oster, who in addition to his extremely good Riesling makes a very convincing Dornfelder. And, it's nicely sited on the way to France, so..

I had my 1st shot of the Astra Zeneca on 5th Feb and the record showed I was due to have my 2nd shot in 11 weeks time. I received a phone call and subsequent booking in for it on 7th April, only 8.5 weeks from the 1st. So hopefully Mrs Dwagon might be as lucky, assuming that she is not allergic to it, is this kind of reaction known to be a side effect or not?

It’s not even that. It’s just there are so many people out there who couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery. The ability to even assemble thoughts into something cohesive and execute it is so rare that it’s commoditised into people who design processes. The result of this is unfortunately the processes are too difficult to follow for those who can’t organise a piss up in a brewery. Who was apparently who I got on Monday.

At the end of the day any group of people has a proportion of chaos in it. And if you incentivise doing things properly people don’t get any better.

Grr. Humans. I’m moving to Mars.

While the surreptitious privatisation of the NHS is occurring ("never let a good cris go to waste"),  I don't think that is the reason in this case. A simpler than explanation is that the staff are all knackered and suffering PTSD.

If you ask Walter, he will ship tings more cheaply slowly and without insurance.

This isn’t related to COVID. This is a notable improvement over historical problems at this hospital. I have actually sued this hospital successfully before I will add.

Some good news. This T495 I bought has premier support (NBD on site service) until end of 2023. Didn’t expect that. Joy to buying up old corp stock. Only paid £550 for it new in box  :-DD

Oi...

More medical shitshow.  ::)

:palm:

I had my 1st shot of the Astra Zeneca on 5th Feb and the record showed I was due to have my 2nd shot in 11 weeks time. I received a phone call and subsequent booking in for it on 7th April, only 8.5 weeks from the 1st. So hopefully Mrs Dwagon might be as lucky, assuming that she is not allergic to it, is this kind of reaction known to be a side effect or not?

Generally, typical flu symptoms lacking respiratory response. So no coughing/sneezing/congestion, but fatigue, body aches, and mild fever are common. I'm a lot more concerned aboot the lack of actual "protection" from this immunization as they've scheduled it now; wifey is a front-line worker teaching kids in person, even if it is as a "volunteer intern" position at present.

If she doesn't hear back from them in a few days, I'm going to insist she talk with our regular walk-in clinic and see what other options there are... even if out of pocket.

reading all those worrying stories, I think it is time for some fun.

I like the girl in blue.  :-+  :-DD

Q: "Will there ever be a singer as great as Freddie Mercury?"  A: "oh, there already is, and her name is Beyoncé"  :palm:  I'll let him slide because he's just a kid, but seriously?!?   :wtf:  (And I'm not even a really big Queen fan - much prefer The Kinks)

If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...
