Well.... that was a pleasant start to the day. Last night I put a couple of last season's bikes up on Kijiji for sale; a like-new Huffy 24" MTB that doesn't fit any of us anymore and my old 26" beater bike which I'd just tuned up. Over my morning cuppa, got a bite on the beater bike; fellow came on foot and asked for a test ride.

I stood there in the driveway with car keys in my pocket just in case, while he rode it up & down the street; then he came back, handed me a $50 bill and didn't even try to quibble over my price a bit.

Now to get to work on the other two beater bikes... they might be worth the hassle of fixing up, just to break even. ;)

Mmmm, shielding porn. I prefer them when they've obviously been milled out of a solid lump of metal but still ... drool.

You would like the German aircraft radios from the late 30s then. All Mg / Al castings (more or less like Märklin locos of the time, even though those were Zn) and shielding, physical integrity and ease of service united in a very thought-out package.

The only three things that saved Europe were US manufacturing capacity, Russian Winter and the exiling of all jewish scientists. Had it been down to science and all other things been equal, we'd all be speaking German now.  R V Jones states as much, both in his writings and the BBC series.  ("The Secret War") Finished watching the series yesterday evening with the middle boy.  If you haven't seen it, a strong reccomendation. Especially compared to the crap that's been produced after, which can be summed up as sensationalistic rumination of misplaced journal film clips to bad music between the ad breaks.

On to TE. I've got a restoration pic post coming up!

Edit: added TV series name.

Ooooh! Where's that available? I watched it in the 70s, then  went and bought Jones' book "Most Secret War" (IIRC "Wizard War" in the US).

I dug it out recently, and found it worth re-reading. Yes, that's my strong recommendation!

It can be found on the Internet. Nearly all (perhaps the lot) episodes on Youtube, and the entire series on various file sharing services.

I will now make another attempt at posting a picture-heavy TE renovation message in this thread; at least had the sense to copy my text into clipboard before clicking "post" and got served with "start a new thread" dialog. Fucking shite, this SMF crap.  :horse:

So, the 8022b got robbed of its 6F22 cellbattery (because I have but one oscillator and several multimeters..) a dozen pages back or so. As I did that little intrusion, I remembered why I'd bought a stash of 6F22 terminal clips; there was a bodge repair on the one in the 8022B. Small project time!

Grab one of the new ones, trim it to length, and furnish it with bootlace ferrules, then.

Empty the PCB of the old ones, and prep to solder the new one in. (I still love my China-sucking-desolderer, buy one!)

Trimmed the length of the ferrules, cleaned with IPA.

Some performance checks, first DC V:

Then ACV, with the 123 as waveform witness. The adaptation of a pseudo-RMS circuit is evident, as the 1KHz sine is 10V p-p and 2*3,45*sqrt(2) is 9,76.

(I will now test how many attachments I can cram in here and still post...)

I have an 8021B which looks identical, at least on the exterior, to your 8022B and I wonder what the differences are? :-//

A lot of neat stuff on my local CL. Remember the old mechanical NCR cash registers?

Tsk, Mans, the 6F22 aka PP3 is not a cell, but is a six cell battery. Except when it's a seven cell NiCd/NiMH rechargeable battery. Not quite sure how to correctly classify the Znter Li-ion rechargeable; it doubtless has a single cell, but that is not connected directly to the tags, it runs through a dc-dc boost converter. Hmmm...

In any case, I never buy connector clips for these, I make them from the connector clips of dead PP3s. One advantage of this is that you can use superior wire, the bought ones tend to be pretty crappy in that regard.

sent out an offer of 600 Pesos for a Revox B77 in supposedly excellent condition.
Just for sentimental reasons, it's not as if I needed it.

What I need right now is an exterminator, we have some varmint hiding under the roof.
Hubby said that getting rid of it using H2S or HCN was not an option ...

Hrmpf.

In other news, already lost about 10 lbs if the newly acquired scale is not lying.
Ok for 2 weeks of diet and excercise, I guess. So let's see if I can make that 20 by the end of the month.

Interesting idea. Yes, why not? Obviously, with a 5-pack of the bought clips being cheap as chips, there has to be some compromises. Anyway, I'm not re-doing it now ;-)

No continuity buzzer on the 8022B. Generally lower last digit on 80xx series Flukes means more features / performance.

Edit, just checked an old RS Components catalog. In 1986 the buzzer (8021B) cost £25 more. The 8022B 8020B with buzzer, conductance and better accuracy was £49 more. An increase of nearly 50%.  My First 8020 was a big investment back in the early 80's, more than twice what I paid for my first car!

My old 0th gen 87 came with this same exact center-exit battery clip; they are stress-relieved with the wires looped through slots in the fiber backing board. I replaced it once aboot 10 years ago after 20-something years of service with a similar one bought from eBay for like 50¢ in Qty 5, but plain tinned wire ends which I just potted with a blob of clear silicone sealant as a stress relief.

I feel that's more than reasonable life for a battery clip, and very good return on service vs assache. :-//

Plus the plastic jacket just looks nicer than cobblety-fabbed from a dead 9V battery; and as I'm the one who looks at it, it's my opinion that matters. ;)

Sorry for my missing enthusiasm, but from an RF perspecitve this repair is absolutely substandard.
Why not wait for a proper replacement mixer so signal integrity is preserved ?
