Been doing TE with my new medicat tablet PC.
Pulgged the SDRplay RSP2 software defined radio into it and loaded the spectrum analyser app into it and presto a 100kHz to 2GHz portable spectrum analyser.  :-+
Very well pleased with the tablet. Hopefully the second one will be in similar condition.

I must be bored, Just bid on and won a Selectest Super 50 analog multimeter "parts or not working" It's in an unusual split door case and while looking OK the cut-out has tripped and it looks like the paralax mirror has partially detached.
Hopefully not too much wrong with it.
I won one last year but it got "lost" I got my money back at least. One meter I don't have is a long scale analog but don't really want to be another AVO 8 owner.

Wetware TE is mucho annoying. Very fiddly. Anyway, finally got a Type K to test my recent purchase, the Fluke 51. Fluke does what Flukes do, sez BAM.  :-+

The lab corner for doing rudimentary analysis of the pool water is being set up. I take issue with the definition of "calibration" that Milwaukee Instruments are using -- they've got an automatic 2-point calibration/adjustment cycle that they simply refer to as "calibration" where one dips the probe first into 7,01 and then either 4,0 or 10,01 solutions; the instrument finds out which is which and adjusts itself. Quite painless, even if nomenclaturally wrong.  |O The instrument, OTOH, feels sturdy and the firmware is quick and easy to understand. Automatic temperature compensation is cool.

Further, my "thermal probes by the slow boat" arrived today. One of the probes actually turned out to be a Type K (shown here freshly fitted with a proper quality plug, replacing the red/blue fork crimps); the others are NTC.  :palm: Sort of annoying, but that's what one gets for shopping cheap gear from stores that specialise in bad Allen setscrews, thermal probes, lingerie, rice cookers and vibrators "for medical purposes".  :-DD Still cheaper than going to Elfa or RS.

I'm planning to try to make my own K type probe. I ordered the cheapest spot welder I could find from far far away. Still waiting for it though.

You are sure your connector is K type ? I tought blue was T type. K type should be yellow.

No K types should be green (IEC), yucky yellow is the ANSI color (sic) code for type K.  >:D

Went out on a LMFM Sale yesterday morning; the local Thrift Stores were open again, and finally the lines only a few people. I had 20% off coupons for BOTH stores, so I sortof Lost My Fucking Mind for a few hours and came home with a trunk full of electronic junque (pron szzh-yoo-nk ;)) to tinker on.  :-DD

This one I got purely out of curiosity... it appears to be a prerelease beta version of the original nexus10. Given it's now almost a decade old and the same platform (manta) as the release product, probably not really relevant anymore.  :-// I had to pop the cover and jump-start the LiPo to get it to start charging, so I took a few shots while I was in there. The patterns inside the back cover are interesting; evocative of the Android pattern lock, but they don't conform to the 3x3 grid. They do appear to be machined, not molded as when looking up close, one can see the fuzz on the edges of the cuts. :-//

What I can see of the firmware is pretty Spartan; it is locked but I hate to nuke & pave, so I'm trying a few of the more obvious patterns before I give up.

There is a lot more of various bits & bobs... there will also be more pics. It does appear I've definitely crossed the line to "Vintage HT Audio Collector" at this stage tho...  :scared:

The Super 50 is a nice meter, used those in college years ago and I've been looking for one of those myself, nice win.

What's wrong with being an Avo 8 owner I ask, I have a few of those myself, and they are a very capable meter.

As Cerebus writes, it's correct. The IEC colour code is green, and those plugs indeed are green, even if my picture fails to tell that -- in my defence I can only state that they're a quite blueish green  :-DD but definitely not blue to the naked eye. Found them as NOS on the Bay, together with some ferrules some time ago.

Those hobos are more likely to use something they bought to check the car batteries in the 70s. Pocket model.

I own an Avo 8, a 7, and a Minor. The Minor has drifted, the 7 is unresponsive (but the movement is OK) and the 8 works. I mostly use analog mechanical VOMen for fun. A place where they're relevant is low DC amps measurements, like the PSU for some small circuit, just to check out that it works and does not draw too much. Especially when you cant be arsed to start the 428b, with its 10 minute warm-up requirement. The DMM is then freed to do voltage work.

Nothing wrong with the AVO 8 per se, mostly I like to be different but also they are pretty expensive at the moment and more likely to have been abused by people because they are recognisable.
I've used and owned severl over the years.

That's actually pretty fucking awesome... may also help breathe new life into some of these beasts that have a knackered VFO or butt-ugly beat-up meter syndrome that you wouldn't mind using as remote dataloggers. I also note that the AR488 GPIB Project he mentions now also has BT support via cheap as chips HC05/HC06 BT modules; which it did not have the first time I read aboot it.

This means easy connection to pretty much any computing device with a screen, maybe even repurposing old outdated phones, tablets etc (like that nexus10) as a portable screen. All that's needed should be something new enough to run any of the many Android datalogging APKs.

Good job  :-+

The counterintuitive thing about living in the city is that rules are less applied over here. Nobody care really. As long as I don't really bother my neighbors (with smokes or excessive noise), they just don't care.

I could probably install an antenna like that over here and get away with it.

Agreed, good job. Building codes and permit requirements vary here by township. Considering the number of derelict structures in my particular township that are occupied I doubt a permit would be required to put up a tower but who knows.  :-//
