"jape" ?!  That's yet a new word for Vince, had to look it up... says "Childish joke "
I just meant what I said no more no less ! Can't you just take people seriously ? Everything has to be a joke in life ?

Jape just means joke or prank; tho there are a lot of connotative values dependent on context. Jest might have been a better choice tho, as I meant joke as in a jibe or epigram. :-//

Oh so I was right you really thought I was joking... having to live in your car isn't really funny ?!  :-//

Jest, jibe, epigram.... oh no 3 new words for me ! It's 2H30 AM here you are killing me !  :-DD

Going to bed....  :=\

Dude... take a chill pill. Nobody's comin' atchoo; we're all friends here. ;)

It's called gallows humor or whistling past the graveyard; it's a very popular pastime in this place. We joke aboot terrifying things to keep the boogeyman at bay, lest he come for us.

Picked this up the other day at the Thrift along with those cameras for CAD$15; Fossil JR9710 in VGC. New battery and a wipedown, looking good. 100% SS, mineral glass lens, WR 5ATM. Last one sold on fleaBay for US$60.

I can just get it closed on my wrist; I don't feel like being arsed to rustle up links from Fossil, so I think I'll pass it along to my son for his birthday. He's learned to tell time on a tick-tock watch; I think it's okay to let him have a digital watch now. >:D

Okay... I think I'm done with fleaBay now.

Gawddamn counterfeit OtterBox for my daughter's iPad. |O

Side by side with the real one I've had for 3 years, there's just no comparison. Cheap thin ABS, not fully sealed front like a real OtterBox, and the skin is hard, shiny vinyl instead of neoprene rubber.

FML. I haven't had a good deal on there since Ju-fucking-ly.

By the way. I didn't mention this TEA/tool acquisition when I got it a few weeks back - Fluke 62 MAX+ IR thermometer. The black body radiator I'm measuring goes by Maija.

We got an used testo along the same lines one a few months back. Use it mostly for measuring things in the lizard tank. Pets need control of their habitat, simply.

Boy, this Fluke 27. I can sell all my hammers!

I once ran into a former boss at the monthly London Fetish Fair.

Me:[taps him on shoulder]  "Hello Martin (not his real name)." [To his boyfriend] "Hello Bobby"
Him: [slightly taken aback] "Oh, hello. I didn't expect to meet you, here."
[We catch up briefly. As we do various people go past and say "Hi Cerebus" in passing]
Him: "Erm, you seem to know a lot of people here."
Me: [archly] "Yes, I do don't I."

Truthfully, I'm remarkably 'vanilla' as it is known in these circles, but at one point I knew everybody who was anybody among London's respectable perverted. I used to get invited to all the parties, and I've seen things that would have given Mary Whitehouse a heart attack on the spot.

I seem to attract weird and interesting people, not something that I have any intention of discouraging. Even if we don't share whatever defining characteristic that marks them out from 'ordinary' people I just take people as I find and that generally means that I can get on with almost anybody. As a consequence I have got to meet and know all sorts of odd fellows and it makes for an interesting life.

And that is my excuse for knowing what BD's on about when he makes a sideways reference to some obscure fetish. What's yours?

I did some thinking about this and have come to the conclusion that it’s a simple function of I=D/M^2

I = probability of interesting interactions
D= how drunk you are
M=distance from middle of London.

Recent datapoint suggests that to compensate for Clapham I’d have to drink so much that the interesting people would be most likely be at Lambeth Hospital.

This theory also explains why you should never go out in small towns.

The insulin sensor: the proposal has been submitted and I need to keep quiet about it now due to corporate guidelines. @AaronLee sorry, no longer allowed to say anything about the progress, I have to adhere to our guidelines due to compliance regulations.

That's ok. Hopefully if they end up making it, you'll be able to state so once it's actually on the market.

Eutectic alloys like 63/37 have a solidus/liquidus temp that is very nearly the same.

You know the most intriguing words.  :)

Since it appears we have some experts around here, is there a limit to the shelf life of 60/40 and ROHS solder? I've bought a life supply of both, some years ago. Just wondering...

By far not an expert.  I bought a roll of 60/40 in the late 90's when I was attending ITT Technical Institute.  I just finished the roll a couple of years ago.  Never had an issue with the solder and I was using it to solder PL-259 connectors on coax up until I ran out.  I kept it mainly for that as I switched to a thinner diameter of 63/37 for use on the bench.  Hope this helps.

I was wondering the same thing about if there's a shelf life for solder, but didn't see any answers to it outside of this one. So I searched and found this thread:

I'm using solder from a roll that was my Father's and has to be at least 50 years old if not older. Works fine.

We are definitely  sinking thinking !!!

I've got this TDS 724A with a busted  ceramic attenuator front-end thingie something like almost 10 yrs ago, and since then I was looking for  for a reasonably priced replacement, 10 yrs of no luck until yesterday I've spotted on  >:D bay a 520A for parts and got for the price of the Chinese sold attenuator.
I'm a bit wary of it, because reading thorough the seller feedback seems that the guy is creating franken devices from dead parts, but if he didn't left at least ONE ceramic section in good condition I will return it via balistic deliver.

Here's the beast, I hope it will survive DHL or whatever sadists they'll use:

What's my "fetish"? To be a hermit and stay away from other people as much as possible. Lady Cop says she sees more people in 10 minutes than I see in a month. And she's right. But then again her job is on the front lines of dealing with the public. But interestingly when she goes off duty and goes home she would rather be a "hermit" too. And I don't blame her one bit. Dealing with the public is very stressful because you have that percentage of assholes. I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

The LGBT folks that Cerebus hangs out with absolutely thrive and love being around people all the time. That's their thing and that's OK. But it's not mine.

This is a message from Hermes tracking:
Code: [Select]
    23. Sep 2021
    2:47

    Sendung am HUB umgeschlagen, Abwurfmeld.
    Ketzin / Havel, 14669

"Abwurfmeld." is short for "Abwurfmeldung". Can have different meanings, one would be "The whatever has been thrown out of the plane/ train / truck", or "the bomb parcel has been dropped"

"umgeschlagen" is kind of a technical term for "has been processed or sorted at the hub", "geschlagen" alone means "has been beaten".

So wish me luck, I'm still positive the parcel will arrive in one piece   :scared:

The cat has just the usual dual retroreflectors and panoply of offensive weaponry.

Talking of animals, Mnem mentioning Otter Boxes reminds me of a phrase that I heard for the first time in ages the other day: "Wet as an otter's pocket" as in "E, it's raining cats and dogs out there; it's wet as an otter's pocket".

Anybody is looking for a good old 26GHz VNA for 450$ ? Shipping might be a bit expensive though :)

This is sad but I don't think I have the place for a giant like that.

NOoooo run away.....
Two big issues, no RF source (needs a 8341A) and that big slot on the top right side marked "Tape"  :scared:
About the only bit of any value is the S parameter test set and even that needs major mods to work with other analysers.
Then there all the cables, calibration and verification kits.
You can do much better for les total outlay unless you really need ultimate performance.

I agree with Robert.
The RF hardware (8515A) is the special part, and you can't get it cheaply in modern equipment. The rest of it has been superseded and can be replaced using modern HW and SW.

On that note it isn't hard to repurpose the test set. I've got one working on my 8753C.
The samplers and VTO are either removed or disconnected and I added a second transfer switch to bring the dual R lines back into a single for the 8753.
No fan required - at least mine came without one anyway and I never bothered.

The test set functions are manually controlled currently using GPIB commands from a laptop, which a few of us worked out here a while ago.
I intend to make it automatic, but that intention has been sitting in the intention box for quite a while now.

I did say major modifications, not difficult... ;D
I just scored a 8753B Unfortunatly it has a 75R test set. But it did come with all the original cables, cal kit (75R), 11850C and 9122D FDD.  It apperars to be a "one driver" from new machine. It has option 2 and Firmware 3.0 factory installed. They had a "C" model too but it was £500 more. For that difference I'll put a LCD upgrade in the B. I also got a 8754A with 50R S parameter test set wth leads. It has a minor issue that all the CRT controls are loose. the come out of the panel on a long 1/8" shaft. I'm guessing that they had plastic couplers that have shrunk and split. No rush on that one as I have a working 8754A already.

While being dragged up in Epsom (right on the very fringe of London), I came to the conclusion that the tolerable places to live were either right on the edge or right in the centre. Anywhere in between was, um, suboptimal.

Epsom was very nice in a boring way, but I was <1km from common land where I could walk in a straight line for 3km without seeing habitation or crossing a road, plus there was Epsom Downs and the Surrey Hills a few km away. And central London was 30 minutes on the train.

I've never changed that opinion, and it has shaped where I now choose to live.

Works fine.

I bought mine in 1984.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
