In the GWN, the country is officially bilingual, so rotating the jar will reveal the English part of the label.

Really ?!  :-DD

Oh didn't know that, that's cool !  8)

Here we have more and more stuff that's written in Arabic and / or some incomprehensible eastern Europe language like  Polish or Hungarian or what have you. I guess it costs too much money to make a 100% French label for French stuff....  ::)

Vince, you are aware that while we are officially subjects of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, these are French colonies, right...? The original 5 colonies were once known known as New France, and included Québec, Hudson's Bay, Acadia, Newfoundland, and Louisiana. These territories were ceded by the French in the Treaty of Paris in 1763 following the Seven Year War. However, the French language is still very much a core part of the cultural identity, as it is with any nation and its descendant colonies.

As a result, pretty much everything here is marked bilingually; not just foods but even buildings and highway signage. Just as in certain regions of Tejas pretty much everything was labeled in both 'merkin English and Mexican Spanish.

It's pretty awesome, actually... I'm learning a dabble of French the same way I learned the little bit of Spanish I know... bumbling around town and just paying attention to labels and signs.  :-DD

mnem
Also it's amusing to sometimes see The Queen's English used where I expect 'merkin English. :o

Dwagon, you just said it...freaking 1763 !!!!   :palm: Time for people up there to move on and get a life of their own !  :scared:
Imagine if we still lived in 1763 nostalgia herein France, fuck me what a world that would be !!  :scared:
Time passes... let past things... buried in the past. GWN is now much closer culturally and in their day to day life to the USA then they are from France. So if anything they should give up on anything French and speak Spanish too like you did in Texas !  ;D

You've got to let it go Maverick, let it go...

BIG TEA moment today... and I mean BIG  as you can see !  :-DD

Another boat anchor... no not a glowing Tek. A glowing Metrix !

A "Wobuloscope"... from what I understand it just means they stuck a little CRT/Scope to vaguely monitor the output of the HF generator. Has modulation capabilitis too.

I alwyas loved thje look of these... wanted one for my futre "vintage" secondary lab/little museum.... that I will arrange in the attic one day, when I get round to turn it into a liveable and presentable space... right now it does not even have a floor, can't even walk up there...

There are several models of such Metrix generators of course, but this one looks like a high end one with its scope addition, and its frequency range... puppy goes up to 800MHz !  :D Right now the fastest signal I can generate it the louxwy 1MHz from my '70s analog  Philips sig gen...

Also, most of these for sale are crusty at best, often void of tubes and/or rusty... yet sellers want hundres for them. 150 at best when yo are lucky... and are willing to do a full restoration on the thing...

So that is to say that so far, I have never found any of these to suit my "value for money" criterion... so to speak.
UNTIL a fewx days ago !

This one popped up, high spec,  looking in good nick from the crappy pics the seller managed to take, guy even sad the CRT /scope was working !
Plus, he was willing to SHIP.. that's also yet another show stopper with these things, people just don't want to ship them.
Best of all... no, it should have cost 500 or more, at todays market price here... but he wanted only 60 Euros for it !!!  :o
AND.. there was a "Buy now " button, so no "I got 20 phone calls, highest bidder gets it " as usually happens... so I rushed to click on the button...
And guy was honest, he DID ship it to me ! Shipping cost me only 6.5 Euros !  :D

I just unpacked it... thze dram continues :for once, the packaging was adaquate, with polystyrene foam all around it, and buble wrap.
At fist I could not even see it because it was covered by.. yes, it came with its original Metrix grey cover ! In good nick too !
So I moved the Tek 575 to the side, so I could put the MEtrix 232 on the bench.... I lifted the cover and.... VOILA !!!  :D

FUCK ME !!! This thing is.... like .... pretty much  NIB !!!!  :scared:     :o

For 65+ Euros delivered !?  :scared:

Just look at this thing !!!  :o

Not a spec of rust, all the bright work looks incredible, only tiny minor pitting when look up close if one is being picky.
Pilot light still looks sparkling. The big / main dial look like new, its clear plastic "arrow"/pointer not broken for a change, and only very slightly opaque, a far cry from the usual heavily yellowed, 100% opaque affair !
Paint on the face plate look like new, no other word for it. Shiny, smooth and clean. Like new.
Power cord : usually these have long been hacked with a power cord hardwired, sticking out the back of the unit. sometimes worse, the original socket is removed... not so here, it's still 100% original, zero hacking. Still has its original power socket, which is a the front on these old Metrix units. PLUS.... the guy STILL HAD the original power cord for it  !  :o
Better : I even get some accessories : came with a viewing hood ! Well kinda, I don't know how you call it..
Didn't take a pic of that though, arf. Depending on public demand...  ;D

Can't believe it... fot 60 Euros I got meself a masterpiece.. my vintage lab is well on it way !  :D
Imagine a vintage table/bench with this beauty on it, feeding its signal to... a big glowing Tek scope of course !  8)

Sweet!
Back in the distant past, the technical school I went to had quite a lot of Metrix equipment.

One thing which fascinated me was that the plastic cover on one of them had a "zipper" moulded into it.
It wasn't a real zipper, just several interlocking strips on the mating pieces, but in operation, it did the same job, in that it had a tab you pulled on to zip it up, unlike today's "ziplock" bags.

I wonder if your cover is that type?

Another neat thing on your device is the really sturdy side  carry handles.

At my old work, we had a bunch of Philips Black & white picture monitors which had similar handles.
When they finally went to "The Great Equipment Store in the Sky", a workmate, who was very taken with the handles, removed them all & put them in the Useful Box".

He was very dedicated to "saving" them, although there were a lot of monitors.

I asked him if he was the "handles Messiah" ;D

Yeah I like those big handles too, participates in that big heavy duty rugged military look I like !  ;D

Interesting cover you came across !  :o  That does not ring a bell... mine is just a simple cover, as simple as one can think of it... and made of cheap plastic with false leather grain molded to its surface on the outside.

With all due respect to my homeland, Americanization ≠ Progress. In many respects, it means devolution compared to the societal norms I'm seeing around me every day up here.

Having a connection to your history is not a bad thing; Past is Prelude. It means the roots of the future must get their strength from the past or there will be nothing to build it with today.

It's when we pay lip service to those ideals without really internalizing them that we lose our way.

I was just about to switch off and go to bed  :=\ when I had an email from eBay ping in, asking if I had got a solution from the seller of that elusive Fluke 85 yet? I replied in the negative and then in a very short order, like seconds, I get more emails informing that they were awarding me a full refund including the postage because of my problem and also the seller did not leave any tracking info which is these days a no-no with eBay.

Oh well, it was always going to be a gamble anyway with something that is badly listed, but it was still worth a punt, I have had some decent results in the past.  :-+

Problem is I also want landline, just because I'm a belt-and-braces pessimist. Previously I had a BT landline and ISDN(!) connection, but the wires have been disconnected from the other pole outside my house.

If you mean a copper landline you are probably out of luck, or will soon be. Openreach has been issuing "stop sell" orders for copper lines on FTTP enabled exchanges 12 months after they have enabled as FTTP in preparation for the complete withdrawal of copper telephony services on 31st December 2025. If they don't get a move on an properly publicise what they're doing a whole lot of shit is going to hit the fan in 4 and a bit year's time. At least one Bristol exchange is on "stop sell" to my certain knowledge.

I need my existing phones to continue working. I believe there will be fibre to copper "adaptors"for existing phones, but that some specialised equipment like enfant operate alarms for the elderly will have problems.

Out of curiosity, which exchange is on stop sell?

Mums alarm is running 4G with battery backup so the need for copper on that front can be worked around. The reality is the older now defunct copper based exchanges were less reliable than the mobile system.

We still have large chunks of the country with no coverage and way way to far away for DSL of any sort but there is either long range wireless or subsidized Satellite for those spots.
Coffee, Food, R/C and electronics nerd in no particular order. Also CNC wannabe, 3D printer and Laser Cutter Junkie and just don't mention my TEA addiction....

Yeah, I still have to start a dispute on that counterfeit Otterbox. Been a bit busy with unpacking and trips to storage unit; pretty wiped out.

Then I wasted the whole day today degrunging, taking wife to work, then another trip to bring daughter to wife at work so son and I could go to our 2nd COVID jab appointment... only to find they closed the location we were supposed to go to without notifying us or removing the site from the scheduling database evidently, as we weren't flagged when we did our prescreen.

We wasted the whole day and 3 days worth of gas and all we got out of it was a cheap pizza on the way home, as we passed right by COSTCO.  |O

NOW I remembered where I recognised the fun in "interference engine" -- it has to be a play on "Difference Engine" which is the title and subject of a SF novel by Gibson and Sterling, widely regarded as the spark of steampunk.  Not that it detracts from your innovative use of the concept, it is in style, and I'm all for it.

It's been in my shelf for some time, shall I reread it?
I read it years ago, and I think I enjoyed it. But I enjoyed all that Gibson wrote, so there is that.
I believe it was less Gibson-y than the other ones (with a co-author, who would guess?) and that turned me off in the beginning.
Verdict: Read it  :-+

Edit: Just woke up, now I saw you asked about rereading it  :palm:
If you like something Gibson-y but not set in the future, sure. I've reread other Gibson and never regretted them...

I gather the 'excursion totale' is the maximum frequency deviation of the wobulator.

Yes you were right ! Now that Robert just explained to me what a "Wobulator" was/meant in the first place, it all makes sense !  :-DD

Hell I can't get myself to put this thing in storage just now.. can't resist the temptation to conduct a few tests to see if I can get a signal ouf of any of the connector, and it see if I can get the built-in scope to display some waveform supplied by me. But that means risking being zapped and possibiy dying, that would be bad... I guess I will just put rubber gloves on  ! :-DD

Quote from: Neper
As to Le Nord, you appear to be caught in the usual misconceptions of all those people who have never got beyond Germinal and Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis. Which is a good thing, in a way, because it keeps things less crowded. Even Bergues has returned to being a nice little town, now the tourists go elsewhere again.

Nope, No Germinal for me and as for the Ch'tit, never seen that movie, I don't like movies that much especially the French ones which all suck big time !  :scared: There were some good ones in the '80s but the '80's was a long time ago now.....   :(

Also, I was BORN up there, so I cna talk !  ;D  Well, a bit south of your North... was born in Picardie, in Noyon. But same situation as the 59. I left that region aged 3 when my parents moved to Angers in Loire Valley, where life is so pleasing, but my dad of course spent the first 35 years of his life in Picardie.. even HE keeps saying "fuck me I am out of here !!!! ". He left for the Loire Valley with ZERO regret what so ever !  :scared:

From the Spans listed and the design of the band/frequency selector indicate this was intended for television servicing. The band/frequency selector takes slot-in cards (were sometimes called biscuits in UK). A similar scheme was used in a lot of early TV's. there was one card/biscuit per TV channel. Yours only has one fitted. This means the RF output will only work in that position.

<SNIP>

BTW, can anyone tell me how the coaxial sockets/connectors are called please ? They look like TV antenna / aerial connectors, don't they ? How are they called ? And what's the reference/spec of the coax cable I need to use/buy for these connectors ? Anyone know of a place where I could get decent looking and quality connectors so I can make some cables ?

Also... might try to find some BNC adapters for these connectors ?? This way I can just use normal BNC cables to work on this thing....
I mean Tek did provide UHF to BNC adapters that you would screw to the UHF socket, so it's not totally delirious to think maybe there BNC adapters for the "TV" like connectors, eh ?  Any link/help appreciated as always !  ;D

<SNIP>

They look like "Belling Lee" coaxial connectors.
In France they were called "9.52" connectors. 9.52mm being the size. Check the internal diameter of the socket. If it is about 9.5mm that is conformation. Adaptors to BNC are available

Knocked off another, and hopefully final, issue with the Type 547. Tracked it right down with the Siglent. Essentially a nearly inaccessible section of the sweep mag switch was dirty with intermittent contact. Took some contortions to get some deoxit up there but now clean. As you can see on the Siglent now nice and stable.

What's left: change out the last aluminum can and then calibration/compensation. Have I REALLY conquered this beast after months and months of work? I don't want to jinx myself.  ;D

Going to finish up this guy then go back to the 212 which is in pieces on bench 1.

Hermes managed to deliver my parcel in one piece (and it wasn't dropped)

Unpacking revealed this - I didn't buy a circular saw, already got one, though not a Makita.

More unpacking - one can see dead tree format manuals of some piece of TEA

Here it is, in good shape and with Option HS Oven

And it works

Display is not worn out and all digits/segments of even brightness, not like in the picture - camera tends to fool one here.

@bd139,
Looking into the ZEN package in more depth, they give you a static IP address, I'm not so sure as that's an advantage, it costs more and as I see it is more of a benefit if you're running a server or a business as it makes it far easier for customers to both find your website and reach you. The downside of that is that with the right tools, people can pinpoint your location and makes it so much easier to hack into your computer.

Not to sure about that aspect of changing over to them, may have to search about for other options or jump on VM's head till they get their act together and sort out their shit and also maybe offer better prices. According to a search for providers in my area, new customers can get the VM deal that I have for only £39 on 2 year contract, so why am I paying £71 as long-standing customer, that Fffing sucks.

Display is not worn out and all digits/segments of even brightness, not like in the picture - camera tends to fool one here.

You need to select a relatively slow shutter speed. That's assuming one has a camera where one can actually do so, one of the downsides of most of the world using phone cameras nowadays is that access to any settings like shutter and aperture is a thing of the past for them.

I'm convinced that's what got me my 53132A cheaply - other people looked at the display being 'wrong' in the listing and passed it by, not realising that the apparent error was exactly what happens when a multiplexed display and camera shutter interact. That let it sit there for a few days rather than getting snapped up as it ought to have been. Mine came to a total of £400 plus change including carriage and import costs. Mind you, there was no way of anybody knowing from the listing that mine was going to come with the ultra stable oscillator option inside but disconnected and fully functional once it had a single tantalum cap replaced (now fully working and showing drift better than the data sheet spec.).
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Don't believe the movies. There is not a database of IP addresses that allows you to instantly geolocate someone. Anyone who tries to geolocate me via my fixed IP address gets the physical address of A&A in Bracknell. As to "easier to hack" - if one's security stance relies on one's IP address changing once in a while then one is also the kind of person who eschews body armour in a shooting war for a wet paper bag. If someone wants to hack you they don't give a flying fuck whether you're on a fixed or a dynamic IP address.

In theory, with my camera I can set the shutter speed, just couldn't be bothered to do so right then.

Your 53132A for sure is the better deal, because it's a 53132, even without the surprise US Oven. Already checked the schematics, there's no easy way to add "1" to the model number, at least one ASIC appears to be involved. Otherwise, I've had luck with mine too, because the seller added real pictures of unit for sale just two days before auction end. There weren't too many bidders, otherwise the price would have skyrocketed. So it was in total about 330 EUR.

I'm with Cerebus on the dangers of static address; they're indistinguishable from dynamic. Don't believe the hype. </publicenemy>

Static is important for things like VPN and such, if you want to run one to get at your internal systems, it becomes easier with a static address.  Having said that, I've been running tunnels towards my dynamic home address for years. It mostly changes when the ISP is merged with another ISP, not at random.

It's more important whether you can get IPv6 or not. If you can, it's a definite benefit and should weigh heavily in favour.

:-DD

Seeing those photos brought back some memories: The first TV's I dismantled as a teenager (IIRC the very first was a Téléavia) used those "rotactor" tuners, the "buiscuits" never used quartz on TV's.

On Vince's photos to me it seems there are two biscuits in the carousel not one.

Here a schematic from a TV that used a similar tuning selector (See Vince, on the frequency chart, some people in France also used MC's rather than MHz at that time.):

I'm paying a supplement for a fixed IP address because otherwise my ISP cuts and reestablishes all connections once every 24 hours, changing the IP address in the process. As luck would have it, this would always occur while I was recording or listening to some internet radio program.
If I knew everything I'd be starving because no-one could afford me.
