I wonder where from did the 9kHz came?
It's not 10, nor 8, but 9kHz.   :-//

Oh,
I forgot to say. I got a PCI one too.....
And a Pultra precison lathe, High speed bench PCB drill, and a few other bits.
The PCI  NI GPIB card is used but in good condition in the original box with CD-ROM.

Robert.

I'm fairly certain I have a manual for the Advance OFS2B you bought (mentioned on the other TEA thread), if it helps.

It may have something to do with the 9KHz channel spacing for AM radio. Just guessing.

A summary of the TE I had a look at last weekend.

Comark digital thermometer 5000

I've had this for a while and finally got round to seeing if it powered up, which it did and with no obvious display problems. With an offcut of K type probe wire attached to one of the ten inputs, it seems to respond to temperature change, just reads a tad low.  :-DD

Venner 7737A/L digital counter (also sold as Malden or Marconi)

A recent arrival, it powered up OK after the mains suppressor smoke bomb* was removed, it's currently non responsive to any input or the self check, it contains several C16 custom ICs and has flexible PCBs instead of regular wiring or a motherboard.

*from experience those fail at random, but not as bad as a Schaffner madness or RIFA madness smoke bomb product.

Continued...

YHP 4270A automatic capacitance bridge

A recent import from the USA, thankfully it arrived without any damage, but with no top cover, I suspect this spent it's working life rack mounted and the cover got lost, I checked and I don't have a spare.

Also noted was a missing fuse holder cap & fuse, the original line inlet has been bodged to IEC, shame as it's an early one (sn 118), can't complain too much due to how hard these are to find.
The input BNCs have some damage, I need to repair them as they seem custom to this meter. Three randomly disconnected wires were also reattached to the card connectors.

A fuse & cap was fitted, line switch changed to 230V and the lamp limiter used to bring this up.
No smoke and most of the display is working, it seems to be partly working, the highest capacitance range is not though.

Next was checking the display problem, this comes out through the front panel, after removing the trim panel & plastic filter. The problem was quickly found, one decimal readout bulb had rusted pins and had cracked, for some reason one pin was squashed, a NOS replacement was fitted & the display is now fully working. While it was apart I cleaned up the front panel.

Checking a random 100nF capacitor.

By far the heaviest beast (ouch..  :palm: ) I have sofar acquired.

AILtech 727 20 GHz spectrum analyser, 70-s vintage. Pure SHF plumbing p0rn  :)
Does work, to what extent I have to further investigate. The RF plugin in my HP 8350 sweeper needs repair, which this SA neatly confirmed already.

Mechanically it is in parts a bit of a disaster design, a ton of cable looms crammed tightly behind the front panel. The SHF section in turn is neatly arranged on a hinged module  :-//  Guess where it had problems initially.

The display is a Tektronix storage scope unit, shoehorned into the welded aluminium chassis.

Fortunately it came with an ArtekMedia CD which has the service manual.

In case anyone out here has a PDF of the operators manual, please send me a PM.

Hi David,
Yes a manual would help. I can't find one online. A quick test shows it's a 200kHz unit  :( It might be modifiable to 198kHz but hard to tell without a manual.

Hi Wilco,
The 727 is a bit of a beast. It competed twith the Tektronix 492 for a US government contract and lost. They sued and lost tha too.  It is a very analog  beast with lots of adjustments and switches to go noisey. Keeping everthing in track and be a problem... It looks like you have a late one. I've had a couple of these, one very early and incomplete. I ended up brealking bothe of them for parts. Two of the most useful are hidden, The main mixer and a comb generator step diode.  Bothe are HP devices in plain gold SMA male/female packages. You can see the comb generator in the top left of your forth photo connected to J3. Some models had a second one of these for the reference comb.
Manuals. I have a paper copy which I guess I could scan. At least it'e not as big as the service manual  :D

Ailtech 727 Operation manual scanned and uploaded to KO4BB's website.
It will be in recent uploads until he reviews it when it should go into the Ailtech folder.

If you don't have access to a desoldering gun, or a desoldering pump, then this is a good method you could use, its something I stumbled across on the internet, enjoy.

An all purpose amp has good arguments to be bought.
This one was 30 Euros.
After a first test it seems to work in general.

First look with a IR camera shows the transformer running at 50 C and I'm not sure if that's OK.

And I have a doubt that there has been someone tinkering already, because
- there are scratched writings,
- I'm not sure if there has been shrink tube in 1969,
- there are kind of make shift cooling fins.

I'd say it's not hot nor not OK, that is not necessary the opposite.
But quite visible it is, maybe fixed temp range would be better.

If you get it up and running, this is certainly the grab of the week! That series makes for indispensable lab aids. While I have an 8347A, an 8447E, an 465A, and an 466A I'm also looking for one in-between the performance of those.

Yep, shrink tube was around in 1969.

We tried some very large shrink tube back then, to try to hold a cable form together but in those days such sizes were made from a different material to the smaller diameters.
The resultant form turned out to be too stiff to feed through the cable ducts, so we had to revert to lacing the form by hand.

Or it could have been the predecessor to heat-shrink which was a chemical shrinking process. The tubing came immersed in a special chemical and sealed in a can. When the tubing was removed from the can and exposed to air it would shrink down.

It is a product that is now long gone, which is probably a good thing. I expect it used 100% carcinogenic chemicals as was the norm back in those days.
