TESTING THE RIGOL MSO5000 SERIES OSCILLOSCOPE
BTO:
HI GUYS,
It would be appear that we got a bit carried away on the other forum....
Here.. (Perhaps from around Page 60 onwards)
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/hacking-the-rigol-mso5000-series-oscilloscopes
and after unlocking our MSO5000 scopes from Factory to 350MHz with all Options we were all chuffed,
But then we unlocked it further to 500MHz
After that there was some debate as to whether the changes were just cosmetic or actual and realized.
So we started testing and uploading screenshots, the results were interesting.
I'm still in the process of testing to see if the MSO5000 can go higher than 500MHz and from what we can tell so far (Long story short) I can indeed go to 900MHz and up to 1.1GHz but not beyond
THE PURPOSE OF THIS TOPIC IS....
1. Go Nuts with scope bandwidth Analysis
2. To keep the other forum on Topic
3. Feel free to add analysis of other scopes, But try to keep it mainly on Rigol MSO5000 if possible

Here is my shorter version of it that contains the activation procedure

Here is the link to the deep dive video series that i created. (This has nothing to do with activation, it's more for people who want to know how to completely use their scopes in depth)
and this thread with complement that video series.

Here is the MSO8000 Series link where ASP @traxpalicaru has put in some awesome work to get us to where we are , this link contains historical versions of the python scripts

Now that the formalities are out of the way. LET THE SCREENSHOTS BEGIN .....
OFFICIALLY this Topic picks up from page 63 of this link

CURRENTLY
@ 6SN7WGTB Posted the Frequency response testing of his MSO5104 (In the Attachment)
@Odd-Job , we thought odd job was a rockstar who had a crazy Sig Gen to die for , But it turns out he just bought an Amazon cheapy so we have lost all respect for odd job :-DD
I'm even considering banning him from this thread until he gets a better Sig Gen :P
@ Me Apparently i was told that i was a knob for using RG-6 Coax (75 Ohm) for testing the frequency response of my MSO5000
my defense was, it's all i had lying around. In an attempt to regain my honour i have gone out and bought SMA 50 (Ohm) LLC Coax
I think that's where we are at.
LET THE TESTING BEGIN
Odd-Job:
Well, I think it WILL be very hard to beat 6SN7WGTB automated graphed result obtained from the most desirable Marconi/IFR/Aeroflex 2025. High Bar, difficult, but I can feel a scheme forming in the back of my head bone.
I WILL have to go old skool. Analog sweep Generator and LOG Graph paper. Maybe my WAVETEK 1801A with 950Mhz module WILL come in handy again.
Used it for design and repairs of Television Distribution Amps, Masthead pre's and CATV systems for motels back in the days. Sure I'll still have some 75 Ω BNC terminators stashed somewhere. (And why would I need these BTO , ya knob. Copy?)
Its (1801a) specs are; (Band 1)1-500Mhz, (Band 2) 450-950Mhz, -33dbmV to +57dbmV ,run CW any where in (bands) range or sweep from 200kHz all the way up to full band range, Xtal Birdy(tweety) marker, great with a Spec Analyser. (nothing like tuning the mark freq knob to & fro and watching as it fired up the phosphor on a Cathode ray tube in a dark room. And for the young people, on the back it has a X,Y and a Z ouput. ( Z output, no such thing ya 'ol fool, get back to the retirement home)
Z (Ext Marker), intensity, so you could watch video signal on a good CRO, hook it up to the horizontal & vertical stages of a (FTA) Tv receiver and fee the Z from the flyback? I think?.
HAIL AND GLORY BE TO THE GREAT ELEMENTAL GODS OF GERMANIUM and SILICON
I FEEL A HAND OF REDEMPTION UPON ME

Definitely, it was a cool graph that he threw up and... of course, he has a Marconi

COPY THAT ! C.Q ... C.Q... COPY !
i was around before "Roger Beeps" so i do indeed copy and i have the phonetic alphabet down pat !
it can be recited upon demand :-DD

MSO5000 can't do 500MHz!
--- End quote ---
Hi,
My MSO5074 with option BW07T3, without any hack of model number has a -3dB bandwidth of about 620MHz (Ch.1@100mV/div).
Measured with a signal generator R&S SMIQ03B, an external 50ohm feedthrough (Radiall R405005) and a Radiall cable.
The diagram below is compensated for cable losses (measured separately with a power meter) :

FYI, Rohde & Schwarz SMIQ03B is a serious bit of kit ;)
Michel.
Odd-Job:
Very nice, VERY desirable and very pricey.
Would need to win a good contract to justify that to the boss, wife etc.
Must read about it. Thank's for giving me T.E envy Michel.
We might have some competition for the Marconi here BTO.
