The 'TDGC2-2K' 2000VA Variac - any good?
« on: January 19, 2018, 03:49:08 pm »
There's a ton of these on eBay but this ad has decent sample images:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Variac-Transformer-Variable-AC-Voltage-Regulator-Metered-Auto-20A-110V-2000Watts/322916450019?epid=633015955&hash=item4b2f51fee3:g:5poAAOSwTmtaIb5n

Does anyone here have experience with it?  Good/bad?

I have to assume that 2KVA rating is "somewhat optimistic".  But has anyone actually used it at, say, a 1KVA level?  That would be good enough for me, and it's fairly cheap, so...

Thanks!

I have one of those 2kVA, no-name, made in China variacs.  It's not the exact one you're pointing to, but it looks identical.  I was working with a 15A load (1.8kVA) when the wiper arced and it internally caught on fire.  The fuse never blew.

I wouldn't trust them with any amount of current.  I'd recommend finding one from Staco or other reputable manufacturer instead.  Used ones for the load range you want are in the same price range.
