TTi MX100TP triple power supply teardown and review
subsonik:
Hi guys,
Sorry to bump up this thread! But reading all this sparked my interest in the MX100TP, and even though it's quite a lot more than what I was wanting to spend, I just bought one :-+ You live only once, I guess.
I concur: nice device, stable and accurate. The user interface is very well thought through, I like it. Love the power reading (VxA) and the wide output ranges so I don't have to mess with serial/parallel connections anymore.
However: one thing is bugging me. Fan noise! :-\ When I first turned it on, the fan was spinning very quietly. However, after a while, the MX100TP warms up (even with all outputs OFF) and the fan speed increases to a level which is really too much for me. It reminds me of those old PC power supplies with an unregulated 80mm fan at full blast all the time.
I measured idle power consumption at a whopping 46 watts, which explains the considerable amount of heat, causing the fan to ramp up. Is this normal? I barely understand how they manage to dissipate 46 watts with all outputs OFF! Do you guys have similar behaviour? I'm almost hoping I have a defective device because I really like all the rest...

First time I heard fan noise from my MX100TP was this week when I had all three outputs running in parallel at 15A /14V to charge my car battery.
Robaroni:
Mine comes on then the fan quiets right down. I've left it on all day with no problem. Try moving to a different spot and seeing if it's reflected sound or something like that.
subsonik:
Do any of you have the possibility to check idle power consumption on your unit so we could compare? Mine pulls 46W with all outputs off @ 230VAC which seems fairly high considering what's inside.

Same BUT after an hour or so of sitting idle, the device has warmed up (46W idle power needs to go somewhere) causing the fan to ramp up considerably.
Robaroni:
122 volts, 42 watts, ~450ma at idle with no outputs on. Fan quiet.
