U1272A firmware update problem and solution
« on: July 29, 2011, 02:42:04 pm »
I finally had some time yesterday to update the firmware in my U1272 but there was a problem with the update software seeing the meter. The meter would beep and show remote connection during the port scan process, but the software returned a "no meter connected" type of error. After trying a lot of different things, I finally had luck after resetting the custom settings in the meter to default (with the meter hooked up to the PC and the update software running). I'm thinking that maybe setting the baud rate to max in the meter caused issues, but I don't know. Anyway, after a shitload of tries I was able to update my firmware :)

Sorry to hear PetrosA, my upgrades were flawless but I use the default baud rates.  You should report this to Agilent.

The meter works very well with firmware 2.0; it has locked up on me 2x on temperature readings, but turning it off and on reset it easily and it did not read falsely before that; after 2+ hours of use with a thermocouple I switched it to VDC to measure something but the screen froze on the range.
Best Wishes,

Anyway, after a shitload of tries I was able to update my firmware :)

Yea those over aged electricians they have issues with the high tech stuff   ;D ;D ;D LOL  ( I love you)  ;)

Now that you got trained you will have less trouble, loading the next version 2.++
Release date still unknown.   ;)

Due the load of suggestions that I did about new improvements,
I suggested to become an firmware beta tester.
I am waiting for their reply.  ;)

After some further testing and contacting Agilent, I have confirmation that the U1272A must be set to 9600 baud rate for the update software to work. The 19200 rate will not work.

Bios updates on motherboards or firmware updates on DMM, haves the same rules.
Always you have to load  the setup defaults before flashing.

Agilent had made instructions ( document U1271-90031 ),
its true that they do not clearing up this detail, and so probably they should make some corrections to it.

I have never, in the last 12 years or so of having and/or building PCs, cameras, GPSs and phones, reset a bios or firmware to defaults to flash an update, nor have I ever heard of doing so. Backing up, yes. Resetting? No.

The tech team has been informed, so I'm sure there will be a change in the instructions soon.
