UNI-T UT181A converted to use 18650's
« on: October 17, 2023, 05:16:37 am »
I have a Triplett 9065 that is really a version 6 of a UNI-T UT181A. For several years now it is my go to when a fluke 87 or a BM869s can't do what I need. But.... It is a pain in the ass to charge, and if it lays around for months unused the battery will fully discharge.

So I 3D printed a new slightly larger back, that protrudes no further than the pivoting support flap on the rear of the unit.

This gives me enough room to put in a pair of 3200 MA 18650 cells in the correct cell holders.

Installed a 3 wire charge port that a 2 cell USB powered charger connects to allowing balanced charging.

Installed a low tech slide switch to allow disconnecting the 18650's if the unit is to be stored for extended periods.

With this setup I can charge, of course, any time the switch is off  or on and even while the meter is data logging, that charge position of the main rotary dial can be forgotten.

It has worked out well with no increase in size testing to see how long it will datalog.

Here are a couple pics of the prototype back.

If one wants to make their own I can email the .3MF file, you will also have to cut out a window in the support bail on back of unit.
